LAN Party DC
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:20:44 pm »
In celebration of my birthday I will be hosting a LAN party at my place (DC area) on Saturday, February 4th, from 4pm onward.

Any and all FA members are welcome to attend!

(note: many of the games cannot be played locally, I encourage those who cannot physically attend to pop into TS and join the fun!)

Games that are on the menu for the evening:
(Most of the games listed $20 or less if you don't already have them)
TF2
CS:S
GoldenEye: Source (free-ish)
BFBC2
LoL (free)
UT2004

Possible games depending on demand:
(unless you already own these, don't feel obligated to buy)
BF3
SC2
L4D2
Alien Swarm (free)
Borderlands
Minecraft (yes, some people like to do this!)

Other details:
-There will be pizza and soda provided, BYOB.
-If you're interested in coming please RSVP either on this thread or via PM so I have an idea of headcount. If you're not sure you'll be free but are interested, let me know that as well, we always have an extra chair.
-For those in the area, I am specifically located in downtown Silver Spring.
-There is ample guest parking in the apartment lot, but also free street parking if need be.
-If you need to crash at my place, first one to call the air mattress (queen size) gets it, else it's the couch or your own sleeping bags.
If all the world's problems were solved today, what would you have left to do tomorrow?

Having been to ten or so LANs in the past two years I can offer a few ideas for transporting your rig.

-A folding dolly is a good investment, no need to break your back carrying the tower. Bungee cords for added security.

-A towel works well for wrapping displays. Typically you want to carry your monitor by itself so you can focus your attention on it (more trips, smaller loads). Put your monitor in a position where it won't shift around easily and nothing hard/sharp is pressing on the face.

-A backpack or plastic bin capable of carrying cords and peripherals is a must. That said, I carry my keyboard separately since it doesn't fit in my party box.

-Streamline where you can to save space. This typically means no multimonitoring (though if you request ahead of time, I can make sure there is space). As well, if you have a webcam that has a mic, that is typically going to be easier to transport and setup than a condensor mic with shock mount and screen. Typically no need to bring a printer or external harddive (common sense).

-If you have your own cat5 or 6, bring the longest patch cable you can. As well, also prudent to bring a power strip. I haven't seen anyone lug a UPS, but you can if you have one.

-If you can get it to the car, you'll have help once you get to the destination. Many hands make light work. If you don't feel comfortable letting anyone else carrying your stuffs, that's fine too.

-If bringing tables and chairs, load those first, then your rig, use blankets/towels to buffer.
If all the world's problems were solved today, what would you have left to do tomorrow?

As long as i'm not stuck with just a cardboard box and a chair like last time I'm game.

Damn, I was setting up your corner too.

In all seriousness, I can accommodate 16 people comfortably. Unless anyone other than you and T are planning on coming, I expect to have around 10-12 people. Even if it were 20+ and we had to put people in other rooms you'd still have a proper table and chair :-p

Calling all stragglers!

Currently have 9 confirmed and 1 maybe (only because his wife is due the 8th).

If you're in the DC/Baltimore/NOVA area let's hear a shout out!
