VR Gaming / 2024: New PC for VR!
« on: March 24, 2024, 02:20:56 pm »
I recently picked up new parts for a PC build. I am really happy with the VR performance on this setup - it's on the high end without breaking the bank. A valid argument can be made to jump up or down to a 4070 or 4080 depending on your budget.

I am currently using a Quest 3 and wirelessly streaming my PC VR games via Remote Desktop over Wifi 6e.

Warner Bros announced an upcoming Matrix movie tonight! As many of you know this faction (as guilds were called in MxO) was formed for the game The Matrix Online. This is exciting news for us, especially since much of the original cast and crew seem to be joining the movie. Here's hoping for a Matrix Online revival someday! Full press release follows:

Quote
(August 20, 2019 – Burbank, CA) – Lana Wachowski—the co-creator of the record-breaking and genre-defining world of “The Matrix”—is set to write, direct and produce an all-new film, returning audiences to the reality-bending universe. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will star in the film, reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Wachowski is producing the film together with Grant Hill. The screenplay is by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.

The three previous films—“The Matrix” (1999), “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003)—have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office and were all top-10 domestic hits in their respective years of release. “The Matrix Revolutions” was also the first film ever to release simultaneously in every major country at the same hour around the world.

Special 20th-Anniversary screenings of “The Matrix” are being held at select AMC Theatres locations across the U.S., starting August 30.

Wachowski is represented by WME, Circle of Confusion and attorney Peter Grossman. Reeves is represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham. Moss is represented by WME, longtime manager Elizabeth Hodgson and attorney Bob Lange.

General / Official: The Matrix 4K
« on: March 16, 2018, 06:42:31 pm »
It's official The Matrix is getting a 4K HDR release in May with a newly 4K scanned negative and Dolby Atmos sound-mix upgrade! The new 4K remaster is being supervised by director of photography Bill Pope.

No word on the sequels yet but I would imagine they (and possibly The Animatrix) will follow later in the year if the release is successful.

VR Gaming / VR Ready Gaming Build - Under $1000
« on: March 25, 2016, 08:16:10 pm »
I recently had the exciting experience of upgrading old hardware (~3 years old) and replacing much of it with near top of the line hardware. I was delightfully surprised to find this rather affordable - especially if you can reuse existing components. I could easily picture a similar build 5 years ago costing north of $2,000. Hopefully this guide can help save some time for those of you looking to build a VR ready machine.

Processor: Intel Core i5-6600K

Purchased: Jet.com using 15% off promo code 'SHOP15' and United MileagePlus Shopping

Why: For the price point nothing else beats this processor. With an unlocked multiplier I was able to notch up the core speed to 4.4Ghz with zero effort. I did not find it advantageous to jump to the Core i7 and pay over $100 more for basically the hyper-threading. The real-world results between the i5 and i7 will be nearly identical.

Price: $221.48 + 204 miles + 2% cash back (some people will owe local tax - I did and the total shown here was after tax)

-----------

Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980TI GAMING 6G LE

Purchased: Newegg.com w/ free copy of the Divison, $30 MIR, and United MileagePlus Shopping

Why: This is an awesome video card and it may be the most critical component for a smooth VR experience. While a GTX 980 may suffice, I think the TI will be longer lasting and hold better resale value for when the next generation cards start shipping late this year or next. I was able to squeeze out 1.5Ghz on the core and 8Ghz (4Ghz * 2) on the memory without any additional cooling or voltage tweaks - all I used was MSI Afterburner. There are a lot of companies that make this card and sales come and go, this just happened to be a better than average. Also check out Jet.com and the coupon above if sales tax is waived in your state.

Price: $619.99 + 2% cash back - $30 MIR - $40 (sale of The Division on eBay) + 609 miles

-----------

Motherboard: MSI Z170A SLI Plus

Purchased: Newegg.com and United MileagePlus Shopping

Why: Motherboard is a bit subjective but I have had good experiences with MSI boards and customer service. This board comes with standard features. PCIe 3.0 which means this version's 8x = 16x on the previous model of processors and board. Includes USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A ports and a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port. Basically Gen2 is faster and can draw more amps but you'll need an adapter to use it with a Type-A device. I would have liked to seen more ports on the back plate but there are plenty of internal sockets for additional front and back panels on you case.

Price: $119.99 + 2% cash back + 120 miles

-----------

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200)

Purchased: Newegg.com and United MileagePlus Shopping

Why: Gone are the days of $300+ RAM. This is a pretty basic pick. It's easy to clock at 2400 and has great performance.

Price: $62.99 + 2% cash back + 63 miles

-----------

Everything Else: Already Owned

- Case
- 600watt PSU
- Cooler Master 212 Cooler (the best bang for the buck and keeps things cool!)
- ArcticSilver 5
- Blu-ray Drive

-----------

Grand Total: $954.45 - $19.09 (cash back) = $935.36 + 996 miles

I have also started selling my old hardware which I expect to make over $200 on bringing the total cost of the upgrade below $750.

(All purchases made with 2% back Citi Double Cash Card)

VR Gaming / SteamVR Performance Tests
« on: March 25, 2016, 07:29:17 pm »
Post your VR performance stats here using SteamVR's system analysis tool.

I recently upgraded my computer for around $900 and was able to achieve a perfect 11 score. It just goes to show that VR is becoming very much affordable for the mainstream. I will provide a link soon with details on my build for those of you who are interested in a similar setup.

Non-VR Games / Furious Angels Rust Server!
« on: September 13, 2014, 05:20:54 am »
I setup an official Furious Angels Rust server! Now that the server has been publicly released it can be hosted on any server. I setup a free Amazon EC2 account and am running the server successfully. It'll probably be fine with 5-10 people but if we wanted to open it up to say 50 we'd be looking at probably $20-30 a month which is in-line with rust hosting companies. Anyway, this will be fun to mess around with. I can also host an experimental server.

To join the server open up F1 console and type: net.connect 54.68.198.164:28015

I fucking hate origin... but I'll take a free game from EA anyday...

Get Battlefield 3 free, forever. Or at least until Origin shuts down.

Hi All,

You may have noticed the site seems to be on steroids! Our gracious overlords have provided us with some brand new state-of-the-art server hardware.

I'm still working on getting some additional access so I can start TS on the new server. I will post an update once I have it up and running.

Thanks!

News and Announcements / Website Hackings
« on: July 07, 2012, 07:07:55 pm »
I just wanted to make a post to acknowledge that our site has experienced two malware hack attacks. These attacks do not appear to be aimed exclusively at us. Rather, they are server wide. My server admin is aware and working to resolve this from occurring again.

Support / Teamspeak Downtime
« on: May 31, 2011, 05:35:20 pm »
I've known that a server upgrade was available for a couple of days now. But, I haven't found a good down time to take it offline and upgrade it.

It's going to require a little extra work than normal but nothing too crazy. So, I'll try to take it down early in the morning before work. So it shouldn't affect much... but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up and especially since it warns you now every time you join the server about upgrading.

Off Topic / Portal 2
« on: February 21, 2011, 01:43:36 pm »
Does anyone want to go 50/50 with me on the 2 pack of Portal 2 pre-order on steam? By ordering the 2 pack we get a 20% discount and 2 gift-able copies of Portal 1.

So for $40 you'd get Portal 2 pre-order and Portal 1 (or if you own it already you can gift it to a friend who doesn't have it).

PM me if you are interested!
