Bought myself a meta quest 3 for Christmas. Je suis le Matrix?
Nice! You should jump in for a round of Population:One!

I will check out Pop: One.  Should I be searching for that on Steam, or the Meta marketplace?
It's free to play and cross-platform, so it comes down to your preference. If you plan on playing on standalone occasionally, I would recommend getting it on the Meta platform since your profile will persist between PCVR and standalone. I think your Steam profile would count as a different account.

I got it on the Meta platform since at the time it was cross-buy. Broin and Lithium got it on Steam.

Jeyk, the cable I linked is the one I use. I like it because it also connects to a wall charger and, therefore, keeps my headset charged during play. Using other cables the headset's battery will slowly drain. I have noticed I get audio crackling if I go above 500 bitrate, which MAY have to do with the cable but may not. I'm still troubleshooting that one. Here's an article if you wanna do some research: https://www.androidcentral.com/best-link-cable-alternative-oculus-quest-2

Lithium, Air Link will initially boot you into Meta's PCVR software and then you can load up SteamVR from there no problem. If you want to bypass Meta's software altogether, you'll need to buy Virtual Desktop on the Quest and then download the streamer software on your computer. Using that method you can boot up SteamVR without having to go into Meta's stuff first. Either way I've had no issues running SteamVR once connected.

My current contract ends Sunday. We'll have to start up some Pop: One again to test the new systems!

So I nabbed a Meta Quest 3 today, but was disappointed to see that I can’t access all the games I bought on the Rift, with the exception of Climb, which has “Cross Buy”.

Is there any way I’ll be able to play my old Oculus library with this thing?  I’ve read that I may be able to with a link cable on my PC, but not entirely sure as it seems that what I’ve read refers to the Quest 2 - I figured you (or someone here in a similar jam) would have the skinny on this.
Yes, it's pretty easy to play all your Oculus library on the Quest 3. You have three options.

1. Link Cable. Personally this is what I use. The charging cable that comes with your headset is NOT a link cable, unfortunately. I use a third-party cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B2QPSWSF/ . Plug it into USB 3 and your Oculus software should find the headset and get it set up for you. You connect via the Link interface on the Quest 3. Using this method you can really crank up the resolution and bitrate and get really high fidelity PCVR.

2. Air Link. Some people swear by wireless, so this is another option. The recommendation is to have a dedicated router for the Quest. You'll plug the router into your computer and then have the headset line of sight to the router. The better the router, the smoother your connection (6E is currently the top dog here). Personally I can tell a big difference in compression artifacts when using wireless over air, but it keeps getting better and better.

3. Virtual Desktop. Same setup as Air Link but using bought custom software to have more options and bypass Oculus' interface. Again, I just plug in with a cable so I can't really compare, but it's an option.

I use my Quest Pro mostly for PCVR. If you end up buying more standalone games, I recommend getting Quest Games Optimizer as it has profiles for each game that will greatly increase the fidelity/performance, especially with the extra headroom on the Quest 3. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Have you picked up the Meta Quest 3, T?
No, it's pretty comparable to the Quest Pro. Most who have tried both said that it's a side-grade and that, especially for PCVR, it's not worth it to upgrade. People only recommend switching from the Pro to Quest 3 if you mostly do stand-alone gaming since the Quest 3 has a better processor for that.

Decided to login in to SWTOR today. Did the guild get disbanded?

Also, what's up?
After a period of inactivity leadership gets transferred to any active member left. I guess when there are no active members left it gets disbanded. I think last time I checked Nocry had ownership? I'm trying to remember what the situation was last time I logged in and caught up on the story expansions, but it's been awhile.

I've simplified a lot since first doing this. Got rid of vrperfkit since my current rig can handle better fidelity. I'm not supersampling with OTT as setting max resolution via Oculus seems to work fine. The biggest things to do are to take the slider all the way to the right in the resolution of the device and go to Oculus Debug Tool and raise the encode bitrate to 480+. I've also upgraded to the Quest Pro!

I made some additional slight changes. It was discovered that changing the encode resolution width to anything other than the render resolution width can create shimmering, so keeping it the same is better. I also updated my PC with a new CPU, RAM, etc. so tweaking some settings to reflect that.

I'm using the default 1.0x resolution at 90hz (3712x1872) and changed the encode resolution width to match (3712). I'm also experimenting with upping the refresh rate to 120hz (mostly for Pop One), but I haven't had enough testing to see if I'm keeping that setting).

Long awaited update! For my 2019 build I was able to boot by messing with voltage settings in the bios, but I never could get it completely stable - especially when I upgraded my GPU to a 3080 in 2020. Finally now in 2022 I've upgraded my CPU, motherboard, and RAM again. I also got a new case, PSU, and cooler so...basically a new rig.

2022 System:

Motherboard: MSI Pro z690-a DDR4
CPU: Intel 13600k
Cooler: ID Cooling Frostflow x240 (liquid cooler)
GPU: Zotac 3800 Trinity
RAM: Teamforce 16x2 3200mhz DDR4
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow
PSU: MSI MPG A850 GF Gaming
Drives: 500GB m.2, 250GB and 1TB SSD, 4TB HDD
PCIe: Anker USB 3.0 expansion card, OKN Wifi 6E AX5400

I do a lot more work on my PC now, and this rig is great at both gaming and as a workstation!

My stability started to nosedive, so I bit the bullet and got a new CPU and motherboard. Intel 13600k paired with MSI Pro z690-a DDR4 motherboard. No power issues! No crashes! And runs like a dream! https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/57068072

I slapped a cheap liquid cooler on it (ID-Cooling Frostflow x240) and it keeps it nice and cool! The only tweak I had to do was changing MSI's CPU Lite Load setting from 12 to 5 as MSI is giving the wrong voltages for 13th gen, making them too hot.

I'm pretty sure my original issue was just a faulty board (or CPU).

Support / Stability Issues with CPU/RAM/Mobo

Not sure who will see this who can help, but figured I'd post so that I can at least organize my thoughts.

Rig:

ASRock x570m Pro4
Ryzen 5 3600
Corsair LPX Vengeance 8x2 3000mhz DDR4 RAM
Nvidia 3080
MSI MPG A850GF Gaming Power Supply
Corsair 4000D Airflow Case

I upgraded the CPU, RAM, and Mobo back in 2019, the video card in 2020, and the PSU and case a few weeks ago.

After my first upgrade, I was stuck in a boot loop for a while. I e eventually solved this by manually setting some voltage for the RAM and CPU. I used the XMP profile to get 3000mhz at 1.35v. The CPU had to be manually set to 3600mhz at 1.3v. This allowed me to boot normally.

After upgrading to the 3080 and trying more intense games/apps, I would sometimes get crashes that seemed power related (no BSOD - just a sudden shut off and turn back on). I undervolted the GPU which seemed to help a bit but noticed I would still occasionally get these crashes.

Recently I did some more testing and found that it was actually my CPU that was likely causing the crash, as temps were quickly getting into the 90s and beyond when running something. I switched out my case and the power supply (as it was very very old), but ultimately it was lowering the voltage of the CPU that helped the most. I'm now running the CPU at 1.28v with a -.05 offset. Any lower and the computer resets itself.

It's been pretty stable since this change, with temps staying in the 70s in games like Cyberpunk. BUT I'm still running a higher than recommended voltage and I'm still having to throttle the frequency at 3600, so my temps are still higher than normal and performance could be a little better. I just don't know if this is something I can fix or if I should have RMA'd something back in 2019. Everything is up to date (bios, etc). I've heard the RAM can cause issues for some reason, but everything should be compatible and play nice with each other.

General / The Quest Pro
« on: October 12, 2022, 07:34:32 pm »
Meta has officially announced their newest headset, the Quest Pro. Perhaps you're here because you're curious about this new headset. It's a $1500 device that adds pancake lenses, face/eye tracking, and better screens with QLED and local dimming tech. Most of the upgrades, however, have gone into the passthrough feature. It's 4x the resolution of Quest 2's passthrough and adds color and depth. All of this is an attempt to add augmented reality to the device.

For VR gaming the general consensus is that this headset is a hard pass. The upgrades for VR are minimal. The screen resolution remains the same. There is better clarity via the pancake lenses, which offer a much larger sweet spot. The panels also provide mechanical ipd adjustment and better contrast. The headset is more comfortable due to the thinner optics.

The sides of the headset, however, are left open to help with AR. As a result there is extreme light leak. There are magnetic attachments that fix this on the sides, but you'll still get the light leak from the bottom. To fix this, you'll need to buy a $50 add on gasket, an insult after spending $1500. Even if you think the new features like face and eye tracking would improve your VR experience, they are locked to standalone only and don't work in PCVR. What about foveated rendering? Apparently a dead end since the processing to perform it costs about as much as you'd save by using it.

There's no direct PC connection still (and probably never will be). It does use wifi 6e, so theoretically you might get better Airlink from the device, though using a cable will still be a better experience.

Even if you are super excited about AR, first impressions say it's still not there yet. And even if you did find something compelling to do with the headset, it only has a 1-2 hour battery life if using all its features. This isn't even long enough to last half a work day of meetings or work sessions, which is the main purpose of the device.

The Quest 3 is rumored to be coming next year and should have a lot of the VR improvements that the Quest Pro has (pancake lenses and an even better chip) while cutting some of the useless new features (face tracking) to keep the price down. That device should be between $300-$500.

Wait for the Quest 3.

Reminds me of Katrina back in the day. It's hard to describe to people how quickly things and seemingly society can just stop functioning.
