Title: Holiday Fun
Post by: Lithium on December 24, 2004, 11:40:07 pm
Why Santa Can't Exist

1) No known species of reindeer can fly, but there are 300,000 species of organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not completely rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (defined as persons under 18) in the world; However, since Santa doesn't appear to handle Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, or Buddhist children, that reduces the workload down to 15% of the original total - 378 million according to the Population Reference Bureau. At an average census rate of 3.5 children per household, that's only 91.8 million homes. One presumes that there is at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west. This works out to 822.6 visits per second. That is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chiminey, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chiminey, get back into the sleigh, and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which we know to be false but will accept for the purpose of these calculations), we are talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus eating, etc. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second. A conventional reindeer can run 15 miles per hour at the most.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-size set of Lego building blocks (about two pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that flying reindeer exist (see point 1), can fly very quickly (see point 2), and can pull ten times the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine, reindeer. We would need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparision, this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth 2.

5) 353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance. This would heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as a spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short, they would burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within .00426 seconds. (At which point  Santa would be between the 4th and 5th house.) Santa, meanwhile, would be subjected to forces 17,500 times greater than normal gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion, if Santa ever did deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

Well actually, I once wrote a 10 page philosophy essay about time.

Existence is based on change of time. If time did not change, then nothing would exist. We all exist because we travel across several points in time. You must exist at each of these points in time to exist overall. Otherwise, you will cease to exist.

If Santa was able to be at a single point in time (if Santa were to stop time for himself), then he would no longer exist, since he would be frozen at a single point in time. When you cease to exist, then you can no longer unfreeze time since you don't exist to be able to unfreeze time. Furthermore, if you didn't exist, how could you deliver presents?

You could also look at it the other way. According to Einstein, the speed limit of any mass is the speed of light. If a mass were to travel faster than the speed of light, it would no longer exist (relative to other masses), since it would skip several points in time. But it can easily come back to existence at a future point in time because it still exists on its own timeline (ie. it is still traveling across several points in time, just skipping a few).

Santa could not come back to existence (after freezing time) because he is not traveling across several points in time. And if he was to travel at the speed of light, then his atoms would break down and, according to Epicurus, he would die and once again cease to exist.

EDITED: Changed the word "span" to "travel". Span isn't the right word :S

according to statistical mechanics, it is possible that everyone's presents could simply materialize in their homes every christmas. of course the probability of this occuring would be 1 in 10 dotrigintillion for each displaced atom of each present of each person at every instant of the average amount of time it takes said displaced atoms to travel to their new location in a 24hour period.

the other possibility, existance in a particular space and time is defined by a standard deviation graph that looks something like this (http://www.russell.com/us/glossary/images/std_deviation_graph.gif)

It has been proven, that things such as an electron, which are very small and move very fast, cannot be proven to exist in one particular place at one particular time, there is instead a range in which a particular electron could exist. The more particles in a defined range, the higher the probability, if you were to say "shoot" one, you would hit it dead on. Now take that scale to n dimensions and lets assume santa can drastically alter the standard deviations, say by using extreme gravity wells (he is a heavy man). then all of a sudden he could in theory exist in multiple places at once at many different points in time. It's somewhat hard to comprehend that since we interpret only 3 dimensions at a time, but it could explain why we never really see him in action, because he's not really "all there" when he delivers our presents.

Title: Re: Holiday Fun
Post by: Lits on December 21, 2006, 04:53:41 pm
did you know, that NORAD got involved with tracking Santa in the 50's when a department store advertised a program to have children "call" Santa Clause to give him their wishlists, but do to a misprint, the phone number they dialed was NORAD. Instead of explaining the mix-up thousands of times over and dampening the spirits of children across the nation, NORAD decided to answer with, I'm sorry, but Santa's not here right here, he's ______ and thus, the NORAD Santa Tracker Team was born :) Now THAT'S Christmas Spirit, and THAT is what the REAL Santa Clause is all about. I'm 19 and I still believe in Santa :)

Merry Christmas! Year # 16!

It's that wonderful time of year again to dash your hopes and joys of Santa Clause.

Go ahead and reread that tired-ass OP: http://www.thefuriousangels.com/index.php?topic=1455.0 (http://www.thefuriousangels.com/index.php?topic=1455.0)

Merry Christmas! Year # 20!

I've been incorrect about the previous year # for quite a long time... it's technically the 20th year!
