General / Nvidia GTX 1080 and 1070 announced
« on: May 07, 2016, 05:26:36 am »
http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/06/nvidias-new-gtx-1080-gpu-is-even-faster-than-the-titan-x/

NVIDIA gave us a taste of its new Pascal architecture with the P100 graphics card last month, which is aimed at servers for heavy duty computing. Now, it's ready to show off how that technology will be adapted for consumers with its new GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. As you'd expect, it's fast: NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang revealed that it's faster than its current performance king, the $1,000 Titan X, as well as three times as power efficient. That's particularly impressive since it's the successor to NVIDIA's GTX 980, which retails for around $600.

The 1080 is also faster than two GTX 980 cards running together using SLI technology. Like the P100, it's built with a new 16nm FinFET (a type of 3D transistor) manufacturing process, which makes it more power efficient, on top of just being faster.

The GTX 1080 is the "largest GPU endeavor, largest chip endeavor, largest processor endeavor, in the history of humanity," said NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. He added that the R&D budget for the new card was "several billion dollars" over the span of more than two years. "I'm pretty sure you can go to Mars [for that]," he said.

NVIDIA is basically positioning the GTX 1080 as the gamer's dream card. Prior to its unveiling, Huang showed off several new titles like The Division and Rise of the Tomb Raider running at max settings in a high resolution over 60 frames per second. He later revealed that all of the games were running on the new card, to the delight of the entire crowd.

The Tomb Raider demo made it clear just how fast the 1080 is. When Huang pulled up the GPU's stats, it was running at 2.1 GHz and the memory was running at 5.5 GHz. That's faster than any GPU today, except for one of its last generation cards with liquid nitrogen cooling. Most remarkable? The 1080 was just just relying on air cooling. (Of course it was also running at 67 celsius, which is far hotter than I'd like my video card to run.)

Among other new technology, the 1080 offers "simultaneous multi-projection," which helps games look less distorted for triple monitor setups or ultra-wide 21x9 screens. It also makes the card more efficient at VR rendering (which is far less forgiving about low frame-rates). Huang says the 1080 is twice as fast as the Titan X when using the multi-projection feature to render VR.

The GTX 1080 will be available for $599 on May 27, and you can also snag a special NVIDIA-designed "founders edition" for $699 (which looks like it includes a stylish new cooler). Almost as an afterthought, NVIDIA also revealed that the GTX 1070 is coming on June 10 for $379 (the founders edition will run you $449).

NVIDIA didn't have too many technical details to share about either card, but it gave out a few stats: The 1080 pumps out 9 teraflops and packs in 8GB of Micron's new GDDR5X RAM. The 1070, which is also faster than the Titan X, spits out 6.5 teraflops and also has 8GB of RAM (though that one is running GDDR5 tech). For the smart gamer, it sounds like the GTX 1070 will be a pretty good deal (just like the 970 was).

But of course, NVIDIA won't be alone with new hardware this year. AMD is expected to debut new cards with its Polaris technology this summer, which will focus on power efficiency as well. It sounds like Polaris is better suited for gaming laptops at the moment, but it could also be a way for AMD to deliver some powerful cards that you can actually afford (think under $300).

In other NVIDIA news today, it also announced a camera for in-game photography, Ansel, as well as technology that makes VR sound feel more realistic.
I'm glad I waited to upgrade for VR.

Since the earliest days of the Oculus Kickstarter, the Rift has been shaped by gamers, backers, developers, and enthusiasts around the world. Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce that the Oculus Rift will be shipping to consumers in Q1 2016, with pre-orders later this year.

The Rift delivers on the dream of consumer VR with compelling content, a full ecosystem, and a fully-integrated hardware/software tech stack designed specifically for virtual reality. It’s a system designed by a team of extremely passionate gamers, developers, and engineers to reimagine what gaming can be.

A first look at what the world can expect in Q1 2016

The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit.

A peek inside the Oculus Rift

In the weeks ahead, we’ll be revealing the details around hardware, software, input, and many of our unannounced made-for-VR games and experiences coming to the Rift. Next week, we’ll share more of the technical specifications here on the Oculus blog.

Virtual reality is going to transform gaming, film, entertainment, communication, and much more. If you’re interested in building a next-generation VR game or application, everything you need to start developing for the Rift is available at the Oculus Developer Center.

E3 is just around the corner — this is only the beginning.
There you have it.  The first look at the consumer model, and a tease that more information will come at E3 2015 in June.

Q1 of 2016 can't come soon enough!

As of 09/09/14, the game is now live.  Looking forward to seeing you all in-game.

This is going to be pretty cool.

Groups/Clans in Destiny can be set to work with both Xbox and PlayStation, so that's what I've done.  No matter what console you're on, you can join.

Once you're added into the Group, you should see two options available on our Group page.  One that says "Set as PlayStation Clan" and the other says "Set as Xbox Clan".  Make sure you click the one (or both) for the console(s) you're playing on to add yourself to the Clan.

News and Announcements / True Player Gear throwing hat into VR ring

We are True Player Gear, a five employee tech startup based in Montreal, Canada.
We are gamers, we are passionate and we have a vision that we’ve been developing for the past nine years. We created a virtual reality headset for the real gamers like us out there.
Up to now we operated in stealth mode, except for the past two weeks were we started gradually broadcasting our existence (eg: VR Mixer @ GDC) in preparation for a Kickstarter campaign.
We didn’t initially intend to make any announcement. But we feel that with the news of a corporation buying Oculus, who is focused on web applications and doesn’t understand the hardware business like others do, we really need to come out of the woods and let everyone know that there is an alternative that is coming soon. We are in the last stretch of developing a final 5th gen prototype and are aiming to present a finished dev. kit on Kickstarter in the next few months.
Specifications: 1080p low persistence OLED screen, 90 degrees FOV, head and body tracking, compatible with PC, PS3/4, Xbox One/360.
Features: hardware accelerated pre-lens distortion, hardware accelerated motion tracking, onboard cameras for positional tracking (WIP), expansion port for makers, surround sound via standard headphones, individual focus per eye for long and short sided peoples, oversized lenses for clearer text, and more!
We strongly stand by the developers and gamers community and as such we would like invite you all to participate in naming the fruit of our labor!

Oculus Rift might have an altered future now that Facebook is in charge, but gamers need not fear. True Player Gear promises to be a replacement that offers all the awesomeness of the Rift and much more.

The six year old, five employee startup from Montreal in Canada aims to sate the wants and needs of developers who are turning their back on a Facebook-funded Oculus headset. At the moment the company simply has a website and a promotional video, featured at E3 way back in 2006, but True Player Gear's twitter feed claims the new version of its VR device will be demoed at E3 this June, with a Kickstarter project planned for the summer.

The headset will be Full HD with a 1920 x 1080 resolution display that uses OLED screens for a 90-degree field of view. Unlike the Oculus Rift, the True Player Gear also uses two 1080p cameras that will, potentially, allow developers and users to augment the reality around them should they choose to. Although the cameras are primarily listed for use in more accurate positional tracking.

Thanks to a host of sensors, users' head movements will be tracked allowing for virtual world scanning using real world movement. Built-in will be a 3-axis 1kHz gyro, a 3-axis 4kHz accelerometer and a 3-axis magnetometer – so it should be accurate.

Despite the promotional video showing no reference to gaming, the headset will be made to work with Xbox One and 360, PlayStation 3 and 4, plus PCs. It also supports multiple games development engines including Unreal, Unity, Havok and CryEngine.

More detailed specs were listed on a Reddit post by the company saying the headset will feature "hardware accelerated pre-lens distortion, hardware accelerated motion tracking, on-board cameras for positional tracking (WIP), expansion port for makers, surround sound via standard headphones, individual focus per eye for long and short sighted people, oversized lenses for clearer text, and more."

We'll be bringing you more details on the project as soon as we can. This could be the true rival to Sony's Project Morpheus. True Player Gear, in fact.

Non-VR Games / Legacy Names
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:21:56 pm »
So since Legacy names are no longer unique, and I've just seen that someone copied mine, I figured a thread was in order to report these situations.

Hopefully I'm the only lucky one who gets their Legacy name copied.

If you see Galactuzz Prime from the guild Praxium, that is not me.  If you see any other Prime in Praxium, it's most likely this same person.  I will gladly provide a screenshot of my character page to any Master if requested.
