Title: randomness (music)
Post by: Da6onet on September 16, 2009, 05:58:27 pm
I got to thinking that we need a thread where people can randomly share whatever music they're listening to and/or think others should be exposed to. While artist/song name suggestions are welcome, being able to actively listen to the music via a stream is what I'm going for here.

Phienyx inspired me to post a few more examples of music from Tipper.

I always equated Tipper's music as offbeat music you could play in the background of movie (or an episode of CSI as the case may be), though most of his music you can't really appreciate without a nice sub.

Relish the Trough (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6VxGcQF0s0/)

Hmm.. Well i know it's from a game, but Monster Hunter has some REALLY epic feeling music tracks when fighting all sorts of different monsters...

The one stuck in my head at the moment is this one in particular... He's such a BITCH to fight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlsGIbMQP_M   -MHFU: White Fatalis

and a band that was recently formed that i had just got into is Cain's Offering

Here's there album.

Most of that stuff is pretty good to drive to.

Edward Elgar - Variations on an Original Theme for orchestra, Op. 36 (Enigma Variations) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wviJIQpZ_yY) (opening theme should sound familiar for matrix purists)

Sorry didn't realize that recording has noise artifacts in the middle, for those of you who just wanted to skip to the most well known variation click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUgoBb8m1eE).

Great idea, Dag.

The piece I was looking for by Tipper called Illabye was a piece I heard in the TV Show "Criminal Minds".  It was well used and created a very eerie mood.  I've always been fascinated with movie music and how music is used in conjunction with visual story telling.  You can listen to the music from a movie and even if the music isn't the most brilliantly written symphony you've ever heard, it will still transport you back to the mood and atmosphere it created when you were watching the movie.

By the way this is one of my current favorite songs.  MK Ultra from Muse's newest album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r02_A-3LOc

I usually prefer music with as few lyrics as possible.  I've been listening to a lot of post-rock for the last few years.  Here is a small selection of my favorites.

The Album Leaf - "Window"; Excellent song to listen to on a rainy day.

Explosions In The Sky - "The Birth and Death of Day"; Good motivator music.

God Is An Astronaut - "Rememberance Day"; Another rainy day song, but a little more upbeat.

God Is An Astronaut - "Infinite Horizons"; Melancholy made audible.

Mogwai - "Acid Food"; Yet more rainy day music.  Noticing a trend yet?

After Burning Man I have to recommend BassNectar, as well... he played almost every night and was the biggest hit on the playa... apparently he plays 350 nights a year throughout the West Coast and Canada. I wasn't really into "raver" music, but I really enjoyed him... actually got me dancing!

The soundtrack to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is... well... excellent!  *Air guitar*

It makes me sad that kids today have to grow up with algorithmically generated, auto-tune-laden, Pro Tools bullshit.  I wonder if they know what a real drum set sounds like.

Bill & Ted's is an awfully shit film... so shit it's good. Pro Tools is awesome, I wouldn't diss it in a million years but I agree on the auto-tuning shite. Real Drum kits are used much more often than you'd think - it suprised me and I'm a drummer :/

I was making a broad generalization with the quip about Pro Tools.  It is a great program and it does have plenty of legitimate uses, but I'm talking about the "bands" who sample 10-15 seconds of digital instruments, and then copy+paste it out into a 3-5 minute song.

Listening to music that was made 20+ years ago is a completely different experience.  You can just tell that there is something different about it.  It's the equivalent of receiving a hand-written piece of mail through the standard postal service, versus getting an email on your cell phone.

I agree with the twenty year ago quote - listening to Led Zeppelin in something completely different (and in someways better) than most of the shit you hear on the Radio today ala Rap music, Lady GaGa, almost any type of pop music and RnB. *cringe*

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but this is my friend Bill, we hung out all the time in high school. He was the one who introduced me to jungle, drum&bass, breakbeats, and overall music you'll never hear on the radio like aphex twin and photek. As well he taught me the importance of true fidelity in music, getting quality audio components, i.e. the music should be crisp and awesomeness on its own without having to turn on bass boost or turn on a preset eq.

I listen to all types and genres (minus hip-hop... Kanye can kiss my ass). Recently I've been listening most to...

The Flashbulb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk-FFrfE0kk)

Free*Land

Photek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qJKxaWb0_A)

Squarepusher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_ImXLQCO20&feature=related)

Pendulum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2sWWj9RjeQ)

And fo course the old favorites, such as Atreyu, Rob Dougan, Juno Reactor, My Chemical Romance, AFI, 30 Seconds to Mars and others.

Recently though I found this beauty from my all time favorite RPG ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1LAhY_uRnI I've transcribed it to the piano, and it's been suck in my head for god knows how long.

Street Sweeper Social Club (Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, and Boots Riley from The Coup) covering M.I.A.'s Paper Planes.

One of their originals:  Street Sweeper Social Club - 100 Little Curses

And then, One Day As A Lion (Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against The Machine, and Jon Theodore formerly of The Mars Volta) - Wild International

Yeah Dag, i LOVE Beethoven's work as well. I'm a huge fan of classical music. I like small bits and pieces of the baroque era mostly towards its end such as J.S. Bach and Antonio Vivaldi. I'm a HUGE fan of the Neoclassical era (especially Joseph Hadyn and W.A. Mozart). I think the reason i love Beethoven so much is because it's a unique mixture of Neoclassical and early Romanticism.

ANYWAY, i wanted to post this website that is just absolutely fantastic. It's a search engine for music and just lets you play it instantly as well as adding to a playlist.

So I was debating posting this because I know not everyone enjoyed Tron: Legacy, but after the Oscars I still feel that it should have gotten a nomination for best original score. Don't get me wrong, I think Trent Reznor is the tops and I'm happy to see a non-traditional techno-ish soundtrack get the award, I just feel like there was only room in the academy's hearts for one movie with that style to be nominated. So politics be damned, here are a few songs from Tron if you haven't seen the movie to know what I'm talking about.

For any of you Mass Effect 2 fans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRvVyMuWbpM)

Lot of good songs, but I don't want to embed any more. Check them out for yourself!

Something about Pendulum's work never quit sits right with me. Like they're a rock band that wants to break into the DnB/electronic genre and it ends up sounding too kitchy or like a "pop" version of what you think DnB should sound like. In fact a lot of the DnB that has come out in the past few years has sounded that way to me. That's why I tend to stick with the old school stuff. Did that just make me sound elitist? Fuck it, nobody messes with my DnB! Seriously though, listen to Blood Sugar, then listen to any of these below.

Pick up/download a copy of DJ Kicks: Kemistry and Storm or Dieselboy's 6ixth Session for a couple of solid mixes (the latter even has Konflict's "Messiah," which is what inspired Pendulum).

So my fav band in all of LA (UltraLove - ultralovemusic.com) did a show were Eddie Griffin (who is also a fan) showed up and stepped in to show some love. Kind of a neat shout out. Plus I get to be semi famous... I'm the blur in the black dress he points to at 1:48 (yay for my 15 mins of fame, lol). We all went to his buddy's house to party afterwards. Craziness ensued. The lead singer's girlfriend got lost in this mansion in Playa Del Rey for like two hours.

Walk of the Earth has a novel thing going, and I can appreciate that even if I feel an enormous amount of pity for the poor guitar needing to be re-tuned after every song. The visuals in the original video were what caught my eye. The brunette with the Mia Wallace look going on and the contrast of the bright green body paint was striking, in a 'sensual yet family friendly' kind of way.

Yes I've been watching Breaking Bad.

I'm in the middle of season two and if the melodrama, soap opera, every cliche in the book shit doesn't stop I'm going to stop watching. So far I'm not 'getting' the uber hype.

It's a good show when it sticks to the crime drama.

Alright, this has been fucking with me for a few weeks now but I finally found it. Either Darren Korb was inspired by Ludacris (which I'm totally okay with), or (more likely) they both used the same sample set in Fruity Loops or Cubase or whatever.

Listen to the strings backing that comes in at 0:13

Ludacris - My Chick Bad ft. Nicki Minaj (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqHliQijgvA#ws)

Same, slower-paced string backing with virtually identical progression starts at ~0:15.

Yeah I love the movie Sunshine, it is one of my favorite sci-fi movies.  Great soundtrack and when matched with the visual style of the movie I just couldn't get enough.  Only one of a handful of movies that after seeing it for the first time I sat through and saw it again.

When I helped make the challenge I took tons of samples from the soundtrack, several of which made the final cut (mouse-over on the star, our recruitment site background music, and even the music playing in the opening movie to our swtor recruitment site).
