For **** SAKE!
« on: November 05, 2006, 02:26:09 pm »
Okay, I'm now crashing EVERY time I log in, Rogan and nocry have taken the brunt of my colourfull lingo (thanks guys :D) and now I'm really getting pissed off.

Virtual memory.... I was wondering what this is.... 'cause I'm getting a warning saying it's too low.

Thanks all.

Ahh, i think this is a easy fix. Go to your control panel, system>advanced>Performance/settings>Advanced>Virtual memory, change>
Then click the bubble that says custom size and set it to what it says is recommended down there and set initial and max to the same number even though they are probably  different right now.

also you may want to run some spyware software some spyware is designed to eat your virtual memory (btw its basically your system memory this might cause less confusion).

Virtual Memory is actually a space on your harddrive that acts as an overflow for you physical memory(the ram sticks in your computer) it is also called the Windows swap file.
Some good tips on Virtual Memory is to make sure the initial and maximum size is the same since this causes less work on your harddrives and more time is actually used for using the known allowed space instead of trying to find more if it needs more and reducing the reserved if it needs less. Also it is good to have your virtual memory on a separate drive from your main, this increases performance since this relieves your main hardrive from having to do more work than it already has to do, it needs to read and write at the same time and if it has less reading and writing to do then you will get faster access times.

Also, it's generally a good idea to have your initial and maximum swap file size be anywhere between 1.5 and 2.5 times the amount of physical RAM you have. For example, I have 2GB of PC3200 DDR Dual Channel RAM, and my swap file is set to be 4096 Megabytes (4GB, roughly). It would be slightly larger than that, except Windows XP does not permit swap files in excess of 4096MB.

Well then again if you have 2gigs or more a swap file isn't even needed really :)

expanding the size of the virtual memory on the computer isn't the key issue here that wont fix the problem permanetly its just a temporary fix.... If his system ram is getting filled up with crap then he has a problem that needs to be addressed just expanding the "overflow buffer" isn't going to help if it gets filled up as well.  The cause of the problem needs to be found out first whether its caused from spyware or many programs running in the background   and yes i didn't want to state the whole definition of virtual memory to confuse him but nevertheless it has been done.

I'll do a defragment too.... Any ideas (I'm running on 512MB RAM too if that's any help).
