GTX 980 Released
« on: September 19, 2014, 12:14:28 pm »
Yesterday Nvidia released their new crown jewel, the GTX 980.

This morning, all of the online retailers started selling the GTX 980. Newegg happened to be one of those retailers and I consider them to be my one stop shop for computer hardware but they completely sold out of all GTX 980's within the first few hours of posting them for sell.

Looks like TigerDirect just got a new costumer, they had the EVGA GTX 980 in stock that I was looking for, EVGA 04G-P4-2982-KR GeForce GTX 980 which has a faster core and boost speed than the competitors.

This morning I splurged and purchased 2 GTX 980's to replace my 2 GTX 680's.

The best part is, they offered Saturday delivery. I will post some bench mark scores after I get them installed.

I got the cards a couple of hours ago and just got them installed.

I ran 3dmark bench mark test on the cards and I am actually pretty happy. The two previous cards, GTX 680, only scored a 8576 and was only better than 83% of the computers tested.

See below for the results.

Fire Strike - Better than 99% of all results
Score 17104  with  GTX 980(2x) and Intel Core i7-3820 Processor

Graphics Score 25259  Physics Score 11627  Combined Score 6301

Sky Diver
Score 33492  with  GTX 980(2x) and Intel Core i7-3820 Processor

Graphics Score 73165  Physics Score 10326  Combined Score19684

Cloud Gate
Score 30316  with  GTX 980(2x) and Intel Core i7-3820 Processor

Graphics Score 124828   Physics Score 8306

Ice Storm
Score 172252  with  GTX 980(2x) and Intel Core i7-3820 Processor

Graphics Score 385392  Physics Score 58676

You can look at the individual detailed scores per test.

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2796140 - Fire Strike

http://www.3dmark.com/sd/2377538 - Sky Diver

http://www.3dmark.com/cg/2106856 - Cloud Gate

http://www.3dmark.com/is/2312533 - Ice Storm

Last night I reinstalled BF4 and was running on ultra maxed out and maintaining 185 FPS in large battles.

I'll probably replace my GTX 680 with a 980 at some point.

Not playing PC games enough to warrant it right now, though.

I was actually in the process of getting the GTX 780 Ti when I ran across a website predicting the GTX 980 release for Sept.

When I purchased my GTX 680's, the day that I received them in, Nvidia released the 4g model of the 680, I was pissed.

I didn't want to get stuck like that again.

I'm not too miffed, as long as I can play Dragon Age Inquisition on it to a rather high quality.

Witcher 3 on the other hand... I may have to get it on PS4. Not sure if I could play it smooth enough on my rig at a high setting.  :-\

At this point, I would consider the new consoles to be obsolete compared to the PC.

What is your current rig setup?

What is your current rig setup?

i7-4790 (didn't OC so is 3.6GHz)
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI Mobo
GeForce GTX 780 3GB
16GBs of Corsair 1600mhz Vengeance RAM
128GB SSD (Corsair Neurtron) - for my OS (Win7 home premium) and essentials. [Have another 1TB SATA for games and files]

Having a bit of an issue regarding some audio and visual 'stuttering' it's very intermittent. Some days it's there every other hour or so, other days it's fine. Weird.

Your PC's spec should be outperforming the next gen consoles with no problems.

My specs below.
i7-3820 Processor 3.6Ghz (2011 Socket)
Asus X79 Pro MB
2 GeForce GTX 980 4GB
32GB 1600mhz Kingston HyperX
480GB Kingston HyperX SSD - Raid 0 (2 - 240GB)
1TB Western Digital Black HD
Windows 8.1
1300 Watt Roswill PSU

The 970 is very reasonably priced and may get it in about a year's time. May venture into two cards at some point, I'm not sure. I'm gonna stress test my rig again today and see if it starts stuttering again after the latest Nvidia driver update.

O.o 32GB RAM? Ooo-err! I want to rely on SSD (they're so fast, maaaan) entirely, but that'd break my wallet to shit.

EDIT: Yeah, stuttering again after 30 minutes or so of Dragon Age 2. :/ Only twice for less than a second each, but I noticed glitches in the textures.
