New GPU (290) Not Working!
« on: July 14, 2014, 12:04:11 am »
Built my new rig...

Video card isn't working. After a lot of fuss, I got it working for 15 minutes and then went out for good. First issue I had was I had to plug a fan into the card even though I was using a different fan. Second problem was my pump was unplugged so it was shutting itself off from overheating. This new problem - I have no idea. When I went to take the card out again, I did notice that the pump had come unplugged at some point. I'm not sure if this happened while I was trying to pull the card in or when I put the case back on.

I've tried about everything. I don't know what to do. The card was working for a few minutes. Is it possible to burn out the gpu that fast? Someone help!

A little more details:

At first it didn't work because I didn't have a fan plugged into the gpu fan socket
Even though I had a separate cooling system plugged into the mobo
None of my separate cooling solutions will fit on the odd four-pin socket, so I had to take the stock fan and plug it in and fit it inside the case
After that, it recognized the card
But then kept shutting off (due to reaching 98 degrees)
Once I figured that out, I fixed my pump and everything seemed gravy. I was starting to install a game to test out the card and then the screen went black. Monitor didn't shut off, just went black and everything stopped responding. Reset and now I can't get the GPU to show up no matter what I do.

Was it a brand new device or used purchase?

It is possible to overheat card.

How many pcie slots do you have? If you have more than one have you tried placing the video card into a second slot?

I tried all the PCI slots. I switched out the power supply. Borrowed some money and went and got a new card and it's working fine. Old card is fried I guess. I contacted the seller and he said he didn't actually test the cards before sending them out, so it's possible that it was bad.

I'm gonna use the new card and return the old card to the seller for a refund. Ugh...I'm just glad my computer is finally up and running.

Aaaand computer went down again. Woke up today and it wouldn't start. Tried paperclip on the PSU and it failed. The fuck. So I have a bad PSU, which may have been my problem all along - not sure. Replaced it with my old 850 watt PSU and now I'm back up and running. I'm returning the GPU, RMAing the PSU, and I still need to do all the rebates and clean up everything as well. Oh, and one of my hard drives went down in the process, but at this point that's an acceptable loss.

This was four days of working on a computer. I swear it better be good to go now or I will freakin rage.

Ouch that's a pain in the ass, troubleshooting those issues can make you lose hair very quickly.

I am glad you got back up and running. The bad thing about buying used video cards you never know how the other person used it or abused it, that goes for all electronics.

PSU could have been faulty and fried the video card initially, I've seen that happen before.

What video card did you go with?

Thing is he had a nice corsair psu. Those are generally solid.
If all the world's problems were solved today, what would you have left to do tomorrow?

Very true, Corsair are generally pretty solid components.

I ended up getting a good deal on a Diamond Radeon HD R9-290 HD Dual Fan 4GB. It's quiet and runs fairly cool. I got it for $360 and it looks like the price has already gone back up to $430, so I lucked out.

T had a model that was known for having cheap capacitors.

Don't believe everything you think.

My video card isn't working. Same issue - it isn't detecting it at all. This is a NEW video card and a different brand than the other one. This is also a different PSU. The system ran for three days playing Rust, Defiance, Skyrim, and Watch Dogs with no problem. Left it idle for five minutes, came back and monitor didn't have a signal. Restarted and can't get the card to work. Seriously I don't know what to do. I almost want to RMA everything and go buy a pre built computer for twice as much with money that I don't have.

Switched PCI ports and it started working again. I'm worried that's a temporary fix. Sigh...

Did you update the bios, firmwares, and reset the cmos?

I would hate for you to get discouraged by building your own system, I honestly will never purchase a pre-built machine again but I have been building my own systems since the late 90's.

Yes, yes, and yes. But all this was done before the new card.
