Virginia Tech Shooting
« on: April 16, 2007, 12:09:53 pm »
There's been a school shooting at V-Tech; if you know of anyone who attends that University I suggest you give them a call. Reports are coming in that 31 are confirmed dead and 30 or so more wounded.

\\Unfortunately edited to update death toll.

I've been reading the story since early this morning when they said only 1 person was killed... then 20... now 31. I imagine it will only rise. Very unfortunate something like this has to happen.

Don't believe everything you think.

A shame the guy who did it died. I would have enjoyed making him suffer a bit first.

Wow.

My heart goes out to all of them. Even the killer. Something must have been really wrong with his brain if he felt that he had to kill all of those people.

It's just horrible...

Misery and hatred and destruction, unfortunately, are exponential in nature. My prayers are with them, also.

Just days before the Columbine anniversary, too.  :\

A couple co-workers of mine have kids at VA Tech.  Thankfully none of them were caught up in the events.

It's about 30 minutes away from me. A lot of the victims were rushed to our hospital. One of the guys who went on tour with us still takes classes at Virginia Tech. We took our show to several elementary schools in Blacksburg. It's very odd to have everything I perceive as local being all over the national press. So far I don't think anyone I know knew any of the victims, but it is still too early to know for sure.

33 is the final death toll, including the shooter. I hope they get to the bottom of the situation and figure out what exactly was the trigger for him. I feel sympathy for him more than I do the rest of the victims. It's unfortunate to see these type of things happen, but perhaps, in a society where abuse (from parents or peers) is becoming more and more common, it is a necessary situation.

My thoughts and prayers are with them all: victims, shooters, and the families of both.

At first they were saying he was looking for his girlfriend, and that she survived.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families; the shooter can rot in Hell for all I care.

Don't trust anything the media says in the first 24 hours. When something like this happens, they turn all their attention to it. When they don't have any details, they start speculating. They bring on specialists who say "this has the markings of a so and so" or "he could have been mad at so and so". All of it is speculation to fill up all the time where they don't have new info. What made me mad was the media interviewing students and while the students are trying to express how they feel, the media starts putting words in their mouths.

Media: "Don't you blame the school for not warning the students sooner after the first killings? Doesn't that make you mad?"

Student: "I really haven't thought to blame anyone else except the shooter."

Media: "But don't you think this could have been avoided if the school had sent out emails telling you to stay indoors."

Student: "Um...I don't know. Maybe. But not everyone checks their emails. I really don't want to focus on placing blame or pointing fingers. We're just trying to move forward."

Media: "But you do think there is a possibility that this could have been prevented if the school would have acted sooner on warning students based on the first killing, right?"

Student: "Uh, I suppose there's a chance."

HEADLINE: "Students Blame School for Shooting"

Ridiculous...I mean, this guy had just been through a lot and instead of just letting him express his thoughts and feelings, they interrogated him like he was on trial.
