Checking out the screenshots, I have _no idea_ how machines with less than say 512 or even 1 gig memory will handle those kinds of graphics..

I sure hope so, cuz I don't think I can go that high any time soon.

I hope 256 can handle it. I think it should be able to cos ive played other games with 512 recommended and it worked out fine for me, but well see. Hopefully, I'll get Beta, and then if that doesn't work well i'll try to upgrade by November.

Really, you need at least 512MB of RAM to run XP nominally.  The system was designed as a resource hog (you can tweak some of the visual settings and change page memory size for some speed improvements) and it needs the extra workspace.

With all the new technology, now's a good time to evaluate your FSB (front side bus).  That is the pipeline between your CPU, Northbridge (chipset), and RAM.  All Pentium 4's 2.45GHz and above operate at 800Mhz FSB now, so check out a motherboard that's going to offer you that full bandwidth.  Also make sure that your RAM is synchronized with the bus, by purchasing RAM with bus that is a factor of 800.

For instance, 1GB of PC3200 RAM costs only $130 now on pricewatch, and offers a bus of 400MHz (which means that your RAM can offer up bits of information once every two CPU clock cycles).  Whether you understand all of that or not isn't too important, just make sure that you maximize the efficiency of the components you select for the heart and brain of your PC.

I'm going to do a little write up because I know quite a few of us need to upgrade/buy new before this game comes out.

well you know they got the video settings maxed out with AA etc. i'm betting 512mb of ram will run it smooth enough to play.

It really depends guys.  The most IMPORTANT factor is video card.  Hands down.  But you have to make sure you don't have a bottle necked system.  For instance if you have a nice NVIDIA 6800 ultra card but only have a 1.7ghz proc with 256 MB of ram... the video card is just going to waste.

You need to make sure it's balanced.

A combination of fast ram proc and video card will do you just fine.  For all those of you who are running older video cards, you will want to make sure you get a nice direct x 9 card to run this game or you won't be able to "see" a lot of the pretty eye candy they are offering up.

I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro 128, but an Athlon 1500 and 512 megs of ram. Not too horrid, but the 9800 could really do so much better...
