VR Gaming / Re: LEAP Motion
« on: September 04, 2013, 11:51:26 pm »
I have one.  Dorks that can't control there hands will be challenged.  Some of us have control and the Leap is AMAZING.

THE SINGLE BEST piece of computer hardware released this year.

If you don't have one.  You can't comment.  I rest my elbows on the desktop and I'm perfect.  Again, soft, weak (ie no strength in their hands) dorks with no coordination will suffer.  I'm not in the best of shape anymore but I have no problems using it.

Manic is right.  The problem with this device is that it is TOO GOOD.  Too sensitive.  The apps available just don't interface well with the sensor yet.

Besides, nothing can ever be as good as the rift.  Oh wait, Leap released a commercial product and had over 1 million apps downloaded in less than 2 weeks.  Yeah crush my dreams more.

Edit - Half of what they're saying in this video is just plain wrong.  I use my Leap in a room with overhead lighting, a ceiling fan and an AC vent.  I get no interference.  NONE.  My biggest problem is leaning into the device and it picking up my big head in the active zone.

I've calibrated my Leap one time.  Ever.  You don't need to recalibrate it.  These guys are totally full of shit.

Again, I sit with my elbows on the the desktop and my forearms NEVER break into the sensor.  Totally full of shit.. again.  These idiots shouldn't be allowed to make a video.  They are completely full of shit.

I suffered through to the end of the video and I don't suffer idiots well.  The guy trying to do the demo was maybe the least coordinated person I've seen in years.  He's failing his fingers all over the place like he's a lost child.

If you want to listen to these idiots (and people that agree with these idiots) that's fine but from someone who has one and uses one alot, the main problem with this device is that it's far too sensitive and the developers (software side) didn't give good thought to what makes a good interface in space.  Different apps have different interfaces and controls.  Some are great and very obvious.  Some are horrid.  That's the software, not the Leap.  Better software will come but the device itself is amazing.

If you're considering the Leap just realize that the device is years ahead of the software now and probably years ahead of the interface for your computer that was designed for a mouse.

Well the good thing about opinions is you can think they are bullshit, even mine and i don't have to care.  ;)

I don't have to change my verbiage to make better points to you, because at the end of the day I don't care about making those points.

Oh you care.. you know you care.. :)  So do I.. that's why I can't have a friend using BS verbage.. =p

Well I wouldn't consider those AAA titles

The term ""Triple A Title" is basically a bullshit term.  It means so many different things to so many different people that it's worthless.  When people use it what it comes across to me as a subjective term that they trot out to make a point they really don't understand.

Sorry Strod.  Use something like "top subscribed games" or "top selling" or "most expensive to produce" or "fastest growing" or "longest lived" to make better points.

I think the gaming market is a lot like many other markets now.  They give you a taste for cheap/free and if you really enjoy it they ask you to sub for the premium features.  Many folks call this the "Freemium" model, while gamers use FTP to label it.  From my perspective it's the future's model, not only in gaming but in many other markets.

I'm a lot less likely to commit my resources (time, money, effort) to something I haven't experienced and enjoyed.  From market trends a lot of people think this way about a lot of things.  That's what makes the FTP or Freemium models work.

Non-VR Games / SWTOR: PvP in 2.4
« on: August 14, 2013, 11:51:47 am »
PvPer listen up.  Big changes are coming in 2.4 and many of them are steps in the right direction.

http://www.swtor.com/info/news/blog/20130812

I'm going to read up and digest them, then post my commentary here.  You should do the same.

New Changes -

Ranked 8v8 will be removed.

Three new arena maps will be added for death match, last man standing type 4v4 arena matches.  Winners will be determined by the best 2/3.

There will be ranked and normal modes for arenas.

There are two modes for arenas, solo and group (you form a group in a similar fashion as you would for normal wzs now).
Matching for groups will happen now based on ranking and role.  No more 4 healers in top end PvP gear v. 4 tanks with no gear.

You can no longer spend skill points in warzones which will basically eliminate WZ respec.

Removal of the Free to Play warzone limitations.

A new Huttball map!

2.4 planned for deployment on the PTS 8/16

Can anyone who's been in the beta comment on gameplay?

After I saw this thread I did some digging and the game struck me as Guild Wars 2 in the Skyrim setting.  Combat seemed a little clunky and PvP was a direct WvWvW rip off of Guild Wars 2.

The positive notes are that the art looked amazing and the character customization (abilities and cosmetics) seemed exceptional.

Well I know the extended downtime was my fault. I apologize for that, but what can you do when a computer craps out on you but get a new one.

I hate, I may of costed us Star Wars, but it doesn't sound like it a big deal, atleast not a really huge one.

Don't claim the blame.  You didn't cost us anything that we weren't already giving away.

So I own this and I'm testing it now to write a review.

Initial impressions:

Technically the device is amazing.  Small, simple, and it just works right out of the box.  You plug it in and download some software (<1 minute on my connection) and you're away.  Depending on where you place it and how you use it a calibration is needed but it took me longer to read how to do it than to actually do it (1 minute tops).  The device operates by projecting IR beams upward in a 3 dimensional sector and then tracking the IR reflection on surfaces using built in IR cameras.  From this, you get roughly a two cubic foot IR box into which you can stick things and interact with your PC.  Tracking is on the sub-mm scale (not tested, from specs) and the device is SUPER sensitive.

The first drawback is that the device is maybe too good technically.  Maybe too sensitive.  With a mouse you have a surface under your device that acts to stabilize the device as well as the hand driving it.  That's all gone with the Leap.  Hold your hands and fingers very still and make careful movements to control the input.  If you lack control and a fair degree of manual dexterity you might find this device to be challenging to use.  Sitting at my desk I've learned to prop my hands and arms in such a way that I can insert my hands into the device's field and operate for a long period of time.  This will be a new thing for many people and you'll have to sorta find your own groove here.

The second drawback is that there isn't a defacto gesture set that does the same things (click, scroll, zoom, etc) so each app has to create it's own interface.  I think people like standards so I think this will be a challenge until the user base grows and standards are adopted based on what works for most people.

Finally, the apps.  There aren't many yet.  The app store is growing but it's very early and there are very few apps that are super useful.  There are some Leap enabled websites but those are few and far between.  I'm considering grabbing an SDK and doing some coding(it's been forever but I'm sure I can pick it back up) just to do a little Leap demo.

All in all, after a short time, I think the device is amazing.  I've been following development of it for a long while and I'm pleased at the final form.  If there are going to be gesture controlled PCs this device (or something a lot like it) is going to be how it happens.  Implementation and applications are lacking at this point but I'm confident that the open source SDK and a rabid community of fans will fix that issue soon enough.

If you're a techie who loves to play with new toys the $80 price is reasonable to fuel the fun and development needs you might have.  If you're looking for pure productivity or a super gaming experience you might need to check back in a couple months.

Anyone else here playing with one and can you share your experiences?

Non-VR Games / WeekNIGHT Raid Group Scheduling
« on: August 02, 2013, 01:26:00 am »
I've been more than a little disappointed in the length of the break and I saw the writing on the wall concerning raiding.

I'm going to suggest that the folks still playing/interested in raiding make it known here and we can consider our options from that point forward.

I'm putting myself down as still interested in SWTOR and raiding on a limited schedule.
