Site revamp?
« on: March 23, 2009, 10:50:31 am »
Lithium and other staff:

What do you guys think about a site revamp?  When I first created this site, I chose postnuke because it was pretty much the new hottness.  Now it's all but dead.  It's forked over to Zikula but there are currently some pretty awesome CMS packages out there.  Namely "Joomla!".

The reason this comes to mind is mostly due to me sort of missing Vbulletin.  I love phpbb but I really miss some of the advanced features Vbulletin gives me.  Then I took that line of thinking down the road of, "ugh, it'll be a nightmare finding Zikula / Vbulletin integration that is mature and works".  So I thought well hell why not migrate the CMS as well.

Obviously this is Lithium's baby now so it's mostly up to him and Tbone but of course I'd lend as much assistance as possible.

This would allow us to come up with a whole new look for the site as well.

Anyway, discuss.

I know lithium is working on coding his own CMS but it's a mountain of a project that usually takes years and a good team of people to make rock solid.  For a community like FA I just don't think notepad will cut it.  ;)

honestly a new skin for the site would be nice. i think it fits more matrix online than darkfall. something darker would be nice.. and defenetly a new banner.
the rest is good for me. besides that new post should be shown at the top and not at the botton.

I will always love our "Construct Program".  And the white/grey is more "angelic", if you will.

Modern CMSs like Joomla support changeable themes.  So we could have a default theme for the site, but allow users to pick between a few other ones.  We could have a light and dark theme for example.  Or a theme for each game.

I'm going to bump this again.  Any thoughts on this?  It's been a year and it's still the same.  I think the forums are just so out of date mainly.  Newer advanced versions support awesome stuff like server side tracking of unread posts (awesome if you're like me and check this site from 2 or 3 different computers) plus the tracking ACTUALLY WORKS (this is really my biggest complaint, plugins that support Android and iPhone usage through tapatalk ( http://www.tapatalk.com/ ) which for any of us smartphone users would be a godsend.

Sorry if I'm being a pain... I just am a fan of the new shiney features of some newer products..

The databases can easily be moved to a total different version..  Even the newest version of standalone phpbb will more than do everything that we need and then some.

Ive already contacted both Lithium and Tbone to let them know I am down with helping out anything that needs to be done.  I can code to an extent, but I mainly deal with security, so if applications and back-ends do begin to change, let me know and I can make sure everything is locked down tight.  God forbid some script kiddie comes along and is able to deface this place.

Don't just bump these threads without adding some actual constructive input to the conversation.  You want an updated forum so badly, make one.

Present it to the members and we'll get some serious feedback on it.  Just saying "Hey revamp our forums" over and over again solves nothing.

Dude.  I CREATED these threads.  *READ* all of my input.  You're implying that I didn't already try to organize and plan.

In all honesty, I hope the forums never change.

Furious since 2006.
