Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on February 16, 2005, 12:23:14 pm
If you'd like me to do your sig then follow this link:
http://thefuriousangels.com/index.php?topic=1422

For those that are more artistically gifted, here are the templates and instructions for creating your own sigs:

There are 2 PSD files(Photoshop 7) because one works as the template(Template.psd) and one has the animation in it(Animated.psd).  This is how I do it...

Start with the template and get it how you want.  Then link everything that you'll need to transfer to the Animated.psd ( Name, FA logos, Pic over circle, Link(at top), The Furious Angels text, and your Crew text layers).  You will need to merge all these layers into one.  Then open up Animated.psd and add these layers.  I left ServiceMaster's stuff there so you can align yours with his(not always necessary). Then delete ServiceMaster's layer and you should be able to export optimized as a gif.  Of course,  certain issues may arise especially with ImageReady...so if you have any questions feel free to post them here.

Template- Has all editable graphics
http://www.arandaworld.com/images2/Images1/FA/Download/Template.psd

Animation- Is already animated and ready to go as soon as you add your layers.  Animations include; spinning circle and moving buttons(widgets layers)

THis is awesome beleev. Thanks a ton for the templates.
One issue I noticed... there is a missing frame on the circle on the animated.psd. Thats why when the circle moves by the bottom right corner of the circle, it seems to jump. This is easily fixed because the image is there.
1.In image ready click on the animation window on slide 3.
2.Click the duplicate current frame on bottom of animation window
3.While selected on the 4th frame (the one you just made) deselect layer "disk 320" visability in the layer menu, and select "disk 300". You may have to open up the "75px disk" set to see each layer.
4.Select the second slide, and deselect "widget 1 copy" visability
5.Select slide 3, select the Move tool (black arrow one), and click on "widget 1 copy" in the layers menu
6.Drag the widget directly up until it is halfway on the canvas and halfway off.

Save as Optimised and your done.

ok ok, so it's barely noticable, and you probably didn't see it until now. Maybe you still don't, but my mother said if your good at something stick with it, and I'm good at being a pain in the ass perfectionist. =)

Gunship for the title.
Matrix (one of the many forms) for the "The Furious Angels" text
and mCode15 for the code on top.

Photoshop 8 (CS) / ImageReady 8 (CS) fixes:

1. Rebuilt the template into a single file (saved on frame 1 instead of frame 7)
2. Fixed the frame 1 propagation problems with the template
3. Added missing animation frame for complete disk
4. Deleted unused garbage layers
5. Realigned hvcft text to expand to fit hvcft name so it doesn't need re-positioning
6. Added clockwise wheel to template (Change set visibility from within Image Ready to change the rotation)

Open this in ImageReady: Template File (http://garth.hn.org/fa/fa_base_sig.psd) (right click... save as...)

Edit text / graphics to suit your fancy.

Save optimized as...

And you're done.

I'm missing fonts! -> Sig Fonts (http://garth.hn.org/fa/sig_fonts.zip)
I want more detail in my angel symbol! -> Original PSD (http://garth.hn.org/fa/FA_Angel_New.psd) | Original AI (http://garth.hn.org/fa/FA_Angel_New.ai)
I want a bigger spinny disk! -> Big (http://garth.hn.org/fa/150disk.psd) | Bigger (http://garth.hn.org/fa/300disk.psd) | Biggest (Original - Resize this for other disk sizes) (http://garth.hn.org/fa/400disk.psd)

Edit:
7. Added 2px fade mask for better white blending (press the eyeball to show/hide the layer)
8. Added simple border option (press the eyeball to show/hide the layer)

Edit:
I want a stamp! -> Go here, read the Readme (http://garth.hn.org/fa/stamps/) (http://garth.hn.org/fa/mar1.gif)(http://garth.hn.org/fa/mar2.gif)(http://garth.hn.org/fa/mar3.gif)

I am in the process of learning how to edit and make a great sig. I'm using Fireworks MX Pro 2004 to do all of my editing. If there is a program out there that's better than the one I'm using and I can get it somewhere that's free, please let me know. Thank you. (and yes, I got MX Studio Pro 2004 for FREE!!! yay!!)

I normally only use Fireworks MX when doing web design..... I guess it works with anything though (haven't really checked out all the macromedia products yet).

For 2D art I use Photoshop and 3D art I use 3D Studio Max..... (WIth a little searching you can find free photoshop and I had to borrow 3d studio max from a friend...).

Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop 8.

This is the most up to date graphics package I could find (a few months ago) that handles the animations well. See Ratio's fixes to see better.

I have Fireworks, don't really use it for graphics except internet (tables and frames)... I would try getting Photoshop (for the final sig) to make sure you are happy.

Hmm. Having a bit of trouble figuring out how to edit the motion paths of the widgets in ImageReady.... and how to get the masks working properly.

Maybe someone knowledgeable could drop me a PM or two so we can talk?

Hrmm, I fiddled with this using the Adobe CS package my brother got with his comp. However the color of my name never stays past the first screen in the gif.

Any help on how to make it continuous would be great. Now, this is my first time using this software, so explain in REALLY precise terms if you could. =P

Here is what my sig looks like atm... (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y88/Vazor/VazorTest.gif)

P.S. Anyone know where I can get a nice clean beret pic to place over the animated circle? EDIT: Green if possible.

And yes, I know I need to change the name of the hovercraft, just not sure if I need to pick a specific one for new recruits or just any one. =)
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 04, 2005, 11:21:47 am
The problem with your sig is that your working in just 1 frame of the animation.  This can be a real pain...I do it all the time.

So to save me some trouble, I get my sig just how I want it on a non-animated template file, but you can just save the one your working on as a different name.

Go ahead and get it how you want it to look (remember: it will only be on that single frame) then link all the layers that you've edited (Name, FA symbols, HvCFT name, beret, and followtheangel.com(basically anything that you've changed).

You can link layers by clicking on one that you want linked and clicking on the box to the right of the eye for all the OTHER layers that you want linked to it.  Once they're all linked, just drag them and position it on your ANIMATED template so that it looks like everythings in the right spot.  Of course, you'll need to DELETE (not turn off) all the duplicate layers that were already there.  I delete because if you turn them off and haven't selected every animation frame (/Window/Animation) then they'll come back in the other frames.

After you've dragged everything to your animated template and deleted the duplicate layers you should be able to 'save optimized as' a gif.  Just remember that once you move everything to the animated template that you must select all frames in the Animation window to apply any changes...otherwise it will only apply the changes to the frame you're currently on.

You can read my first post for extra info on this process.  You don't have to merge everything like it says, but it may make things easier.  Hope this helps...you can PM me if you have any other problems.  Good Luck!

PS: I get just about all the images I use from GOOGLE images searches...so I'm sure you can find a beret that way.

Use imageready, not photoshop. Make sure you're editing frame 1. If the change still doesn't work. you need to right-click on the layer you're editing and enable "Propagate Frame 1 Changes". Once that's checked, it will carry anything you change in frame 1 to every frame. There are some issues moving between versions with whether or not the propagation flag is stored.
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 10, 2005, 05:42:59 pm
Grh. Still having the same problem with the changes not taking effect in all of the frames.
I'm using your template, Ratio. I made all the initial changes in Photoshop and hit Shift+Ctrl+M to get it into Imageready, and it looks perfect in the first frame, but not in the others.

Also, how would I go about importing a larger size of the spinning wheel from those other PSD files, and then inverting the color of it so it's more white than gray?
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 10, 2005, 05:51:44 pm
Don't make any changes in photoshop. Do it all in imageready.
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 13, 2005, 04:20:05 pm
Hmmm, never heard of the Propagation thing...cool.

Midnight- To make the image lighter, you can just go to Image/adjustments/brightness and contrast or hue/saturation.  Either turn the 'brightness' up or the 'lightness'.  As far as the larger spinner, I think you'll have to import the pic and rotate it yourself in every frame.
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 22, 2005, 01:49:24 am
Hmm... How do I re-apply that fade mask thing or whatever to the other text?
(Furious Angels..HVCFT..etc)

I went to edit the file and when I opened the document it said do I want to update the document, and clicked okay, and Now all the edges around the text are really jagged and pixelly (I'm hoping i don't need to brush over these with a blur tool to fix this).
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 22, 2005, 11:42:39 am
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you wanted a gradient right?  The Furious Angels layer and HvCFT layer should have some effects already applied to them.  If you click on the effects then go to gradient overlay, you should be able to apply a gradient (color overlay overides gradient so make sure to turn it off).

As far as the text...It sounds like you don't have the fonts, but I think I get the same message sometimes and I'm pretty sure I have the fonts.  I just never update the text cuz that changes or rasterizes it.

Temp fix:
Just open the original and choose to not update.  Then drag all your edited layers over to the original.

Other than that double check to see if you have all the fonts.
Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on April 22, 2005, 06:23:44 pm
Nevermind. I figured out what the issue was. It was the type of settings that were applied to the text.
You know, like Sharp, Crisp, Strong, Smooth, etc.
They somehow got reset to "none", so I just went and changed it back to smooth.

[Edit]: Oh sheeeeit! Check out my insanely hot new signature! Custome widget motion paths, altered spinny-wheel color. It's too sexy, yo.

Nearly complere update of the template to take advantage of new CS2 features. Don't even bother if you're running CS or lower. Requires both Photoshop 9.0 and Illustrator 12.0 to be fully editable. Requires only Photoshop 9.0 for basic manipulations.

You can get the file Here (http://69.94.90.218/fa/fa_base_sig_CS2.psd). And yes, before you ask, it really is supposed to be 22 megs. Lots of embedded stuff now.

Changes to the sig for CS2:

Smart Objects

The disk: The spinning disk is now a smart vector object and can be resized without loss. To do this:
1) Select the layer group (either "Clockwise Disk" or "Counterclockwise Disk")
2) Unlock the layer group (click the padlock icon in the Layers window)
3) Menu: Edit->Transform->Scale
4) Click the chain icon to maintain the aspect ratio.
5) Enter the amount of scaling you want in the input boxes. Don't use the handles if you want it to remain round.
6) You don't have to maintain the aspect ratio and can make the disk any shape you want which can lead to things like this:
Note that you can also rotate the entire group to give the disk a different starting point. Flipping the disk horizontally will change the rotation and also mirror the disk graphic for more variation. Toys toys toys.

The angels: The angels are also smart vector objects, so they can be freely resized, rotated, skewed, warped, etc. with no loss of quality. Note that layer effects (like emboss) do not scale with the object, so you may need to adjust the effects to achieve the desired result. The layers have also been linked, so any change to one layer will automagically happen to the other. This will keep the "shadow angel" consistent. That only applies to transform manipulations, so layer style changes still will need to be copy and pasted between the two:

The stamp is now part of the sig and is a smart object. Can be rotated, scaled, etc. The standard layer style for the stamp is already included so the old difficult import directions can be completely ignored. I also redrew the stamp so it is now all vector with no raster elements at all, meaning it can be freely resized without the jaggies. To edit the date on the stamp:
1) Right click on the layer "Stamp (Smart Obj)" and select Edit Contents.
2) Illustrator will open.
3) In Illustrator: Using the text edit tool, enter the appropriate date on the date layer.
4) In Illustrator: Menu: File->Save
5) This will update the psd automagically - but it only works once. In other words, if you want to change the date again, go back to step 1.
6) To change the color, edit the Color Overlay in the layer style.

Animation
Redid the animation to support Photoshop's new animation tools. It is no longer neccesary to do anything in ImageReady. The frames window can be found under Menu: Window->Animation. Fixed propagation, confirmed save point, fixed timing, fixed layer unification, etc.

Styles
Cleared all old style information and redid it. Everything should be more easily editable now.

General
The new .ai file for the stamp can be found here (http://garth.hn.org/fa/stamp.ai).
The new .ai file for the disk can be found here (http://garth.hn.org/fa/disk.ai).
The old .ai file for the angel can be found here (http://garth.hn.org/fa/FA_Angel_New.ai).
Note that these may or may not require CS2 to view. (These are not required - they are embedded in the psd. They are here just in case.)
Anything that is a smart object is labled with "(Smart Obj)" on the end.
Fonts are still available here (http://garth.hn.org/fa/sig_fonts.zip).

Hmm. Just noticed a problem (thanks Ferris). Reinstalled PS 8 and fixed it. I'm not going back to 7 to check the fix... mostly because I can't find my 7.0 CD at the mome.

1. Cleaned up the unify locks. That whole only modifying frame one thingie should be gone completely. Adding new layers will still generate the problem, but you can just unify them on frame one in imageready.
2. (The problem) Changed the angels to vector masks. Should get rid of layer effect artifacts from the previous flattened raster images. (They can also be resized without loss since they are vector based.)
3. Wiped out some unused style info.

Fix is here (http://garth.hn.org/fa/fa_base_sig.psd) (That's Photoshop CS/8 compatible - The CS2/9 files don't have the problem so the above links are good).

Nightmaremode, you are best to make changes (like importing still images) in photoshop.  If you goto file, then place you will be able to import a variety of types of images, as for editing colours of the disk and widgets, if you have the layers tab open (defaults to bottom right corner of the workspace) you can double click on the layers to change their appearance and add FX.

Self teachin is fun :P

Extract the files that are in the zip to a separate folder.  Then go to the \Windows\Fonts folder and click on the "File" drop down menu at the top left of the window.  You'll see "Install New Font"  click on that and then in the new window browse for the folder you extracted the fonts to.  Highlight all the fonts and then click on OK.

If that still doesn't install those fonts for you then your only other option is to open up the nearest window and chunk your computer through it.

Thats lookin pretty good too Subb ;)

I like the top one Lits cause it shows your ship, however it's not necessary. :) Though then again, the bottom one is less clutter heheh... I can't decide!

EDIT: Bottom, deffinently bottom lolz

Bell, I thought you had the PSD file for your current sig, thats why I asked for it earlier, but if you don't then don't worry about it because I have the original template for it and can make you one from scratch using it.

**Damn run on sentences**

I was going to say the top one, the bottom one was over the top.  They're both still too tall to be proper sigs though

They're 150x500 so I'm quite sure they are within the size limit.

Title: Creating your own Sig
Post by: Anonymous on July 11, 2006, 09:38:26 am
Yeah the system is set to allow a preset size or a limited size (including text) so if you can see it then of course it is allowed.  However, under the usual rules of a banner sig it would be too big.

I'm only explaining that to you because I hate those "I'm right and you're pwnd because I say so, not because I can back it up with anything" arguments ;)

Haha, Nocry, you're so nice about everything. I love it. :)

For those that want signatures in the future: Don't be afraid to say EXACTLY what you want with your signature. Chances are, someone can do it, or if they can't, they'll try hard to make it look as close as you wanted it. The signature maker has a harder time reading "Will you please make me a sig?" with no details given. Say exactly what you want on your signature and how you want it. It makes the signature makers time easier because they aren't spending an hour thinking, "Hmm.. what should I do?" because they can then spend their time figuring out how they're going to make it.

I love that signature, Subb, by the way.
