Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Tbone on May 21, 2004, 02:48:52 am
That's right. This one should be tough enough to cut back on recruitment quite a bit. Give it a whirl yourself by logging out! If you figure it out, let me know in private.

yea, or is it a diversion? Does the text in the challenge just make up for a sorta random address, or is there a key in it?

Anyways, not coming online again unless I have solved it ;)..

There is a solution and it does not require any special hacking tools. I will give you the hint that input is in the form of an html (aka http://www.followtheangel.org/solutiongoeshere.html

Just in case anyone else is wondering, it's the fact that I was using Netscape rather than IE. So, if you arent using IE, you may need to try again, and use all the possibilities with IE.
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on May 22, 2004, 03:23:00 am
Ah, that would explain it.  Does anybody know if it matters if you're on a Mac or a PC (either using IE)?

As long as it is IE it should be fine for what your are looking for... Even if you don't have IE and are just using netscape there are other ways around it, its just more work.

Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on May 23, 2004, 02:36:40 pm
My friend hacked it, and the solutions way simpler than i thought it was. Just like the last one where you thought it would be way harder than it actually was, this one was excellently designed to keep the clans population down.
I probably wouldnt of figured it out without a free night to just mess around with it. Excellent, excellent work. At least until someone posts the solution to this one to.

Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Tbone on May 23, 2004, 07:01:38 pm
I helped DoubleOhZero out a little. There is a solution. Oh, and I fixed the ending so that the guy who posted the link on the MxO forum is useless. A normal person might think "You are a pawn" is the ending to a joke (in other words, that there might be NO ending). A curious person, however, would do their research. Trial and error is a fun technique as well ;-)

Oh, and no one has PMed me the solution yet, so I'm assuming DoubleOh is the only one who actually knows the answer. Those who claim you have cracked it, confirm it with me.
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: likwidtek on May 24, 2004, 01:06:46 am
confirmed with tbone and all solved.  Jesus that was hard.  My mistake was that I over thinked it.  I doubt we'll get a new recruit for a long long time.  My advice and tbone helped me realize this... is dont make it more complicated then it is.  The answer is always simple.  Don't make it harder then it really is.  Actually use the clues laid in front of you.  They are trying to tell you something.

Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on May 25, 2004, 11:52:34 am
Whatever puzzle format the Pawn bit is in...yeah, that?...well, my mind doesn't think that way.  To me it seems like a lot of guesswork and very little puzzle about it.  Maybe I'd think differently if I could figure it out.  :P

I know we seriously need to limit our recruitment, but I still strongly believe that this kind of challenge is going to keep out extremely skilled and thoughtful recruits.  It would seem to me a better idea to have a slightly more difficult challenge combined with a more stringent application review or trial period.

Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on May 25, 2004, 02:05:20 pm
I'm with Muse.  I don't doubt that this challenge is good, because it's stumped a lot of us.  I do however question the means by which you solve the puzzle.  Again, I don't know the answer.  But if it turns out to be something that doesn't make a lot of sense, then I agree with spending some time making it complex, but solvable.  The lack of clues so far seems to indicate that giving a hint isn't possible, because the only hint you can give would be the answer.

I'm not going to say SS142 made all that much sense. However, SS142 is the easiest part of the whole page to understand if you look carefully.

I guess the best hint I can give is what put me on the right path. Search the net for SS142 and see what you come up with. It might give you some hints as to what it means.

As for the pawn, I haven't bothered.

Uh.

That is not a good hint, unless you somehow stumbled upon the answer in a much different way than I did.  People ought not solve the ss142 part from searching google.  Its a step-by-step instruction manual pretty much and you need no search engine to help.

I don't understand how you folks are getting this surfing the web.  The answer has nothing at all even remotely to do with general surf stuff (I should know, that was the first thing I tried hah!).  It is a very specific puzzle that requires you follow the instructions and you absolutely cannot get the answer otherwise.

I mean, maybe I'm on crack or something but seriously....

Uh, no.  I have solved that part now and I'm still of the opinion that it's not a particularly good puzzle or puzzle piece (the ss142, on the other hand, was).  I don't think many people will get it and I also don't feel that it is in any way an indicator of their intelligence or problem-solving prowess.  In fact, the answer is achieved through something so mundane in today's society that its almost paradoxical.

From the Recruitment Thread:

"To everyone;
the fact is to be able to "follow the angel" you have to be quit an experienced hacker, it seems a lot of you...are not, not to be mean but if you haven't completed the puzzle by the 1st month your probably not for the angels. An experienced hacker would have the tools and/or progs to trace the node, the intelligence to create his/her own progs to use on the puzzle.
no offence meant...azel"

That's an interesting angle...

Hooray! I solved it!

However, I am ashamed to say that I could not do it by myself. I had to read the post in our recruitment thread, which totally explained the significance of ss142 before I could move on. After spending countless hours trying to solve ss142 and failing, it took me all of 30 seconds to solve the pawn part.

You see, all that is necessary is to find out your method of creating challenges. Once the answer to ss142 is seen, you know what format the answers are in.

Because of this, Tbone, unless you want an influx of new recruits who may have "cheated" I strongly advise you to change the challenge again. It appears that there are tons of people that have gotten past ss142 because of the post in our thread, and I am sure they will all get the pawn part soon.

But anyways, I feel much more relaxed now that I've solved it, and props to anyone else that did!

I think the page with ss142 I think had been down  at some points. I tried the URL many times over a few days, and it never worked, I tried it again today and it did. That's where I was getting hung up at. That and I think you made it a bit too easy by adding the new clues.

Maybe someone published the answer on another thread....cos two would be possible, three inprobable, but four? That is in the words of whoever made language, impossible.
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on July 15, 2004, 04:15:59 pm
As said on Ventrilo, we need to start a new challenge and possibly stop recruitment till then....someone is leaking the answer, or the clue(which, it's not that hard to spot) is helping waaaaaay to many people.
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on July 15, 2004, 04:45:41 pm
I looked around on other boards today, not many people posting seem to even be picking up on the clue, let alone figuring out what to do with it. Even if they do get past that part, the next is almost as challenging. If the answer is being shared, it'd have to be in private. Of course, the challenge basically starts at this point now, since everything leading up to it has been given away.
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on July 15, 2004, 10:40:40 pm
I agree that the challenge should be changed, i started at like 9:30PM an finally at 12-something i finished, but i didnt really think about it the whole time. I dont know how long it took for others or if my tie was quick, but i think a new one is a good idea.

Are you trying to kill Tbone? Sure changing the challenge would make it much harder to be accepted into the FA but sheesh! Not to mention, people would shun it  and us just at the thought of all the different puzzles they have to solve just to get in.
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on July 17, 2004, 05:57:09 pm
Hmmm, I dont know. I think I would accept being shunned if we kept the 10 year olds out.

Really, if the challenge crumbles (which, btw, the hard part has), we will get a flood of every new person. Hell, even mxo.cummsucker would be able to get in. We have an excellent community, and since I browse the other major clans forums, we have possibly the best members. Would you want our community ruined for 50 members saying "i pwn j00 dood"? I didnt think so. Thats how the actual MxO community will be, unfortunately, and I joined and stayed in this clan due to the fact they we have a lot of cool members. I dont want to be on ventrilo and hear right when I come in "like oh my god, no, you suck [expletive] more than i do!  I had sex with your mom! LOL! HAHAH!"

Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on July 17, 2004, 07:23:37 pm
Yeah, this faction really does have gr8 people.

But I think that our most important "gate" to keep out lamers is the application. I mean it asks some quesitons that require *gasp answers in paragraphs! With no 1337 speek!

So far, the flood of people that has joined recently seem pretty cool, but I don't really know them yet.

Perhaps Tbone should start screening the application more carefully?

Personally, I think the only reason I got in was my application...

Well no one really knows how closely Tbone examines the apps but I think he has done a great job with them. We do have a great community and we have lots of people who are really cool. Hopefully we'll keep that going long into the game and long after, I for one hope that the Furious Angels become one of the first and oldest guilds in MxO. How about you guys?

likwidtek, we would usually vote on the applications that are questionable. If I don't detect a problem then I general just use my own judgement. So far the guys coming in seem to be grade A. If one of them is a spy, they'll be weeded out eventually.

Nice job to whoever came up with those challenges. I like them alot, someone should make a thread with extra challenges to do for fun. I did quite a bit of the Hacker WarGames, where you have to go through levels like that, finding the solution to each challenge, and moving up the levels. Although not many people can think of the solutions quickly, there are alot of those Wargame veterans who can answer them in a flash...lets hope not too many are looking for a MxO clan eh? But once again, good job, if you need any help with newer ones, let me know, I have some good ideas.

Yeah the old one wasn't much of a challange once you got past the first bit, still some people had trouble on the next bit in not reading the whole 2nd page, to get password but that stopped people for all of 30 secs.

Part of it still exists www.followtheangel.org/private.html or somthing around that, some people found it when trying to crack the new one.

I have a question for whoever made the current challenge. On the transmission page, with the three transmissions,  how do you get the text to seem like its being typed out right there, ya know with each letter appearing after the one before it?
Title: New Recruitment Challenge
Post by: Anonymous on July 26, 2004, 09:04:56 pm
Maybe you should have the first challenge made put up and then after they pass the frst challenge they have to go through the second challenge made. Lik ethe irst set of challenges made added with the second set of challenges. That would make people think harder because people would think it is easy to join until they hit the harder challenges that were in the second challenge set.
