Valve and VR - Day 1
« on: January 15, 2014, 04:47:05 pm »
This is an ongoing story...

Today is the first day of "Steam Days", a conference Valve is holding to get game devs behind Steam Machines and VR. Today is mostly about Linux. Tomorrow is a bunch of talks about VR. That said, Valve is showing off an apparently mind-blowing VR prototype behind a black curtain. I don't have many details yet, but I will update this post as I get them:

"I’m signed up to see the valve vr hardware. It’s behind a black curtain so no one can see it. Everyone who has tried it says it is mindblowing and blows crystal cove away. They need to call me to let me know when I can see it, so I need to save my phone’s battery. So no posts for a bit until then. Be back with impressions!"

Subsurface Games' Twitter: "I just tried valve's low persistence VR prototype and it is the coolest experience I have ever had VR is most definitely the future of games"

Tomas Rawlings' Twitter: "VR was an important driver behind why Valve wanted to develop a controller."

More Twitter:

"Valve’s VR demo at #SteamDevDays felt like being in a lucid dream state and very much like a holo deck #mindblown #vr"

"It’s going to be hard to go back to my #oculus dev kit after experiencing #valve’s #vr demo. Kinda like playing an xbox then 8bit Nintendo"

"resolution is way higher, super low latency and accurate position/rotation head tracking. I was able to physically walk around"

On FOV: "similar to oculus. It felt like an oculus but a generational leap forward"

"it was many experiments. I could walk around an area freely and felt like was in an altered state of consciousness."

"it was all passive experiments, I could walk around a small area in the room, the head tracking was amazing. I could crouch"
