Rumors were flying around Reddit today that the consumer Rift was still "18-20 months away". This was based on a story done by NPR that quoted Palmer stating that time frame.

save the day and added a teaser about the developer kit 2:

Our best guess: Nate and I were talking with Laura about how some people think that Oculus has been showing prototypes for years, when in reality, the company has only existed for about 2 years. Nate actually corrected me at the time, saying it's actually less, between 18-20 months. That would line up pretty well with Laura's piece.
Bottom line: 18-20 months from now would be Sept. to Nov. 2015. We don't have anything planned with hard dates that far in advance, especially not in such a tight window.
Right now, we're focused on wrapping up DK2 and getting that out to developers ASAP. Good news soon!
This comment, combined with their comments at the SXSW panel, gives a pretty clear indication that there will be a DK2 announcement at GDC later this month. Oculus has stated that the second developer kit would be released shortly before the consumer version, so this also makes people hopeful that a consumer Rift is coming sooner rather than later!
