So a bunch of folks I know have now seen it, and I've never seen this kind of reaction before. People are pretty evenly split on it. Some like it, some don't. For fair and equal reasons on both sides.

/shrug

I liked it, what did yall think?

I read an article about it and it's director in Wired magazine the other day.  He's the same guy that directed Requiem for a Dream and Pi.  On that information alone I will see this movie.

I loved it.  My girlfriend was iffy about it.  And the lady at the ticket counter actually tried to talk us out of seeing it.

The idea and symbology of "Birth, Death, Rebirth" really appeals to me, and that's pretty much what the entire movie is about.  Mayan mythology, Buddhist philosophy, and present day science, all wrapped into one story.  I guess most people felt that those three universes don't mesh well.

My only gripe is the lack of character development.  The movie itself is beautiful to watch, but I couldn't give two hoots about the characters.  That, and the hospital's operating room was nearly pitch black.  No self-respecting doctor operates in those conditions.  :)

It's another one of those enlightening tales that half the audience won't understand as was the fate of another enlightening tale which used almost similar imagery(fractals), The Matrix Revolutions. I've been dying to see this movie as I was very much into Mayan/Buddhism themes at the time, I would also google for Buddhist/Hindu mandalas, and sometimes I would research stuff like Terence McKenna's theories on time and stuff and how that related to the Mayan calendar. Also lots of Hindu/Buddhist publications have actually talked about some 2012 theories, since Maya means illusion in both the Hindu and Mayan religions.

Oh and not to mention I'm into Philip K. Dick, and Warner Bros. has proven to be very cool when it comes to his stuff like Blade Runner and A Scanner Darkly. Warner Bros. is an awesome movie studio these last few years. I know that he has nothing to do with that movie, but the fact that Warner has done great jobs with two of his finer works, and took big risks on the first Matrix, I gotta give them props. So I don't expect them to disappoint me with this one.

So those are the random ramblings and reasons behind me wanting to see this. I see it as another WB enlightenment experiment.

That reminds me, here's some essay by McKenna about PKD.

http://www.sirbacon.org/dick.htm

I realize this post of mine may not have much to do with this movie, but I suspect when more of us see it and get it, and enjoy it, we'll be discussing some quite enlightening stuff.

Perhaps the woman who was trying to persuade you from seeing it was confused by the film, and tried to help you pick out something that wouldn't frustrate your mind, luckily for you, you got the film.

Excuse some of the incoherence in this post, it's like 6am and I've recently screwed over my body clock from playing GoW and Wii all night long lately.
