Wow, that Beta interview is back in April 2009. The "select group of players to test specific things" held true for sure.

Yes. Daniel Erickson stated this year at one of the conventions (I believe pax) that they held to the old theory that beta testing should actually test products versus allowing large numbers of players playing the game early as a form of marketing by word of mouth.
