Nvidia G-Sync
« on: October 18, 2013, 09:21:34 pm »
http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/18/nvidia-g-sync/

Not to be confused with Nvidia's G-spot, Nvidia announced a new technology called "G-Sync" today. From what they've described and shown, it's a "game changer."

What does it do? In short, it gets rid of tearing and stutter, regardless of frame rate. How does it do this? It dynamically changes the refresh rate to match the frame rate on the fly, so you don't perceive any lost frames. This is huge for VR - if Oculus can adopt this technology, it would greatly lower the FPS threshold needed to not get sick.

What's the catch. You need both an Nvidia video card with the new technology (I believe 660 or greater) and a monitor that has the G chip in it. Nvidia SAYS that it won't be expensive, but we'll see.

Theoretically this will completely eliminate the FPS obsession that games have to abide by currently.
