I have two computers hooked up to a router so they can share the internet connection.
Is there a way for me to transfer files from one computer to another via this connection. If so, how?
-
Step 1: Make sure both computers are in the same "Workgroup" (Right-click "my Computer", left-click "Properties and then left-click on the "Computer Name" tab)
Step 2: Create a shared folder on the destination computer you want the files moved to.
Step 3: From the computer that has the files on it already go to file explorer and type \\ComputerName\SharedFolderName and hit Enter. (There should be 2 backslashes before the Computer name but the posts keep removing it)
Step 4: Make Sure you know the Administrator logon credentials for the computer you want to move the files to because you may be asked for them.
Step 5: Copy files
(Depending on you versions of Windows (I assume its windows) you may have a "Shared Folder" already created so Step 2 and 3 aren't really necessary. The key is knowing the path to the destination folder and having the proper permissions. Having both pc's on the same workgroup makes it just a bit more easy)
Hope I've helped.

Thanks for the info, but what if I do not know the admin PW?

then just share the folder that has the original files and access them from the destination computer following the same steps. The rest should just be Copy and Paste.

You can use any login name/PW on the target computer.

ok. What I've done so far is to share the folder that has the files I want transferred from the source computer. How do I make sure I can locate it from the destination computer?
(not trying to be difficult, but I have very little experience even with simple netwoking)

Step 1 will help you with that. make sure both are on the same workgroup name.
