It plays some PS2 games Teck, just not all of them.  Be thankful you had a choice: Europe didn't - even on the "premium" version.

You can download software from the grot (if you connect your PS3 to the internet) so you can use PS2 games on your PS3...

That's what it's like over here anyways.

We're talking about two different things, guys.  You're talking about the backwards compatibility issue on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB.  I know all about that.  Some games work, some don't.  Have to download the update and it'll fix most games, etc.

The brand new 40GB does not have PS2 backwards compatibility at all.  The Emotion chips are simply not there.  It uses software emulation to play PS1 games, but cannot play PS2 games whatsoever.

No, we're talking about the same thing.  No Euro console has the emotion chip: http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=250&blogid=2

Ouch. :(

So, wait... you guys do or do not have software emulation for PS2 games? Because the 40GB US model does not.  Says right on the Sony US website that it will not play PS2 games at all.  Maybe they'll release PS2 software emulation on the US model.  It already has PS1 software emulation.

I only have the 60GB but I imagine they are both the same.  Since emulation is entirely software driven I fully expect they'll support it soon enough for you lot

The software emulation doesn't matter to me since I bought the 80GB model anyways. :x Just got home and unpackaged it all.  It's all plugged in and turned on.  For some reason, I couldn't over the internet so I'm downloading the update to one of my flash drives.  As soon as that is done, I will update to 1.93. :D

Then I will most likely be playing either MotorStorm or Need For Speed: Carbon. :D I need to get an HDMI cable.  Right now I only have the Component (Red/Grenn/Blue. Not Composite - Yellow/White/Red) cables, which look pretty good.  But I want to see if HDMI will make a difference.  Some say it does, some say it doesn't.

Component won't make a difference unless you're watching a movie encoded with ICT

Well, I found out my 80GB model does not have a Emotion Engine chip either.  Sony has completely stopped putting them in all PS3 models.  The 80GB is using PS2 software emulation.

Weird that the 40GB model does not....

What a great move by Sony.  If you want to upgrade to a PS3 and still be able to play PS2 games (without having both a PS2 and PS3 connected to your television), you have to spend the extra $100 on the 80GB. :p

But really, the extra $100 is worth it if you figure games are $40-$60, and you're getting an extra 40GB of hard drive space.
