I figured I would start a new thread for my own build. I gotta find the cash (most of which I can hopefully get from selling my laptop), but if anyone has any other ideas for some quick cash, let me know. I'm updating this as I go to get the best bang for my buck when I finally pull the trigger.

What did you change? I was literally just looking at this a few minutes ago, ha ha. Is it the CPU?
-
In my opinion a gaming rig should have at least a core i7 if you are going the Intel route.

Why do you say that? I was under the impression that there was minimal performance increase from i5 to i7 for gaming.
-
Because you don't want the CPU to bottleneck the GPU. The i7 should have additional threads which should reduce the risk of bottlenecking. Personally, I build AMD rigs to keep the cost down but utilize the best processor they have.
-

I messed around with upgrading the CPU, but it would require a new cooling unit since the other CPU I was looking at was mainly for overclocking. Doing research, both overclocking and i7 produces very minimal results for gaming. Everything I've seen has stated that your GPU will bottleneck before your CPU, even when using i5.
I upgraded the motherboard from a Z87 to a Z97 and chose the MicroATX version so that I could get a smaller case. This is mainly to future proof the device. Z97 will be compatible with the newer architectures.
I upgraded the storage from 120 GB to 250 GB. It's an extra $50 but it's more than double the storage. If I need to, I can downgrade back.
I upgraded the case from an ATX Mid tower to a MicroATX. It's a smaller case, so there's less room, but my theory is that everything is getting smaller, not bigger, so having a massive PC tower is gonna be pretty silly in a few years. I'd prefer something that's easier to move around, so there ya have it.
As much as I want an Nvidia card, the extra VRAM for the 280x apparently allows it to benchmark better at higher resolutions than the 770 even while the price is significantly lower. For the Rift, this will be pretty important. We'll see what the prices look like when I pull the trigger, though.
I use Tom's Hardware monthly guides to tweak this. I also use Logical Increments and /r/buildapc to look at discussions. Here you can see (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-6.html) the 4590 has great performance and is definitely the best bang for your buck.
Here you can see (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-8.html) the 280x is a very good lower high-end choice. If I had the money, I'd get for the 290 or the Nvidia equivalent, but I'd rather not shell out over $300 for a video card.
-
You're right about everything getting smaller. I'm amazed how much smaller my pc is from the "blue monster" I inherited from you. And mine is regular atx. But I don't think atx will be phased out before I would need to completely upgrade anyway.
I noticed that the SSD was 250 gig earlier, and I was thinking "I thought for sure he was getting the 120!" Probably a good upgrade for 50 dollars.
Oh, I noticed there's no ram on the list. Are you pulling from your current desktop?
-
"RAM - 8 gigs (4x2GB) DDR3-1333 Triple Memory Module Corsair XMS3 Dominator w/DHX technology"
I'm pulling 2gig sticks out of my current computer. I assume it'll be compatible (please someone tell me if it isn't). Apparently there's not a big difference between 1333 and 1600. Ideally I'd use 4 gig sticks so that I could have room to upgrade to more RAM, but I already own six 2 GB sticks, so...
I can also probably pull out the HDD as well as keep using my external.
-
Should I buy? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gigabyte-AMD-R9-290-4-GB-GDDR5-Graphics-Card-Sequential-Numbers-/191232412026?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item2c8657097a (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gigabyte-AMD-R9-290-4-GB-GDDR5-Graphics-Card-Sequential-Numbers-/191232412026?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item2c8657097a)
Really cheap price for a great card...
Edit: Impulse buy - I bought it. Huge upgrade for the same price I was gonna pay for the 280x.
-
Does anyone have any advice about a Micro ATX? My only fear is that components may not fit right. For instance, I'm worried that my HDD may block some of my RAM ports (I need all four since I have 2 GB sticks). I read that happened to someone else, but I think it was a different case and a different mobo.
-
I probably should have done a bit more research on the 290 I bought. It's one of the originals based on the reference design. The original design came with an extremely loud fan that's not good at keeping the card cool. Almost everyone recommends getting an aftermarket cooler and installing it, which of course costs more money and would probably take up more room. I'm debating just dealing with the noise and seeing if it's tolerable.
-
I read some reviews on the case, and I number of people said it was nice and roomy inside. You can look at this guy's build with that case to see what how it might look with everything in it. http://pcpartpicker.com/b/ZrxYcf
It's interesting to me that that case makes everything upside down, ha ha.
-
I'm going with this case simply because my build is centered around the DK2 but it will be in the living room entertainment center and double as our new HTPC and couch gaming machine

Dago is gonna buy my laptop from me, and I've already purchased the video card, so I'm hoping to pull the trigger on this tonight or tomorrow. I'm looking for advice here:

-
What is your current budget or what are you looking to spend?
-
Updated again. Dago is buying my laptop for $650. I also am trying to sell my Razer Hydra for $275. That gives me a budget of $900.
I already bought the video card for $260. Currently the remaining parts are going to cost $635 - $10 promo code for newegg + $30 for GPU bracket (kraken g10).
Total cost: $915
-
Everything on your list seems to be a good. I think the build will be a solid running machine.
The only thing i would suggest is upgrading the video to Nvidia when the budget allows.
I never cared to much for AMD cpu or (ati) video cards.
You could always upgrade later to an i7.

Looks like a very decent build. Question though...Will the Rift need a Graphics card with that much memory? Am I behind the times and all graphics cards have that much these days? I have a couple Radeon HD 6970's (crossfired), do I need to be looking into upgrading in order to use the Rift?
-
The only thing mentioned on Oculus Rift website is:
Recommended specifications: A desktop computer running a dedicated graphics card with DVI-D or HDMI graphics output, with capability of running current generation 3D games at 1080p resolution at 75fps or higher.
I am currently running 2 GTX680 SLI, should be fine.

That's a good question. From what I understand, VRAM comes in handy when gaming at higher resolutions. The DK2 is 1080p, but what if CV1 is 1440p or higher (as it is rumored to be)? I want to be able to play at those higher resolutions so that things aren't blurry far away, text is easier to read, etc.
All of that said, who knows what Oculus has behind their magic curtain. Perhaps they're working on something that would make most of this moot. I was due for an upgrade anyway, though, and with the DK2 coming in August, I wanted to be sure. Originally I was gonna go for the 280x, but I found the 290 on eBay for the same price (turns out that it was due to a shitty reference cooler, so I spent the extra $80 anyway).
-
The build looks fine. The mini-ATX is probably okay. Typically you lose some additional USB ports or fancy audio stuff on the motherboard--but it looks like they have even solved for that these days--maybe you lose some PCI-e slots and crossfire/sli isn't possible, which isn't a big deal.
-
Lithium and I are having a discussion as to whether the Corsair H55 + Kraken G10 GPU cooling solution will fit in the Silverstone PS07B. I think it'll fit in the back.
-

Nope. No SLI or Crossfire for Oculus. All kinds of frame rating issues, lag and latency stuff. You'll need to disable SLI. :/
-
I wasn't aware, I guess 1 gtx680 will be fine.

Do you have any documents or links that can verify your claim, because I would like to be sure?

I'm on my phone. Google it or search the oculus subreddit for things pertaining to SLI, Crossfire and dual GPU.
I'll try and post a couple links but again I'm on my phone:

Yeah, it's pretty well documented among those who have tried it out. It adds a frame of latency even if other issues are fixed. Hopefully it's something that's solvable, but it doesn't sound like they are there yet. A single powerful card is the way to go for now.

This video is REALLY long and SUPER technical but it explains it perfectly:

Ok, I got all my parts in and have started building! Waiting on Dago for most of it, though, as he has my thermal paste and I'm paranoid about messing something up!

You do know that Radio Shack sells thermal paste right?

Video card isn't working. After a lot of fuss, I got it working for 15 minutes and then went out for good. First issue I had was I had to plug a fan into the card even though I was using a different fan. Second problem was my pump was unplugged so it was shutting itself off from overheating. This new problem - I have no idea. When I went to take the card out again, I did notice that the pump had come unplugged at some point. I'm not sure if this happened while I was trying to pull the card in or when I put the case back on.
I've tried about everything. I don't know what to do. The card was working for a few minutes. Is it possible to burn out the gpu that fast? Someone help!

Upgrading a bit again as I've been hitting CPU bottlenecks recently.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard: ASRock X570M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3000
A problem I see coming is that my cooler (H55) doesn't fit the AM4 chipset. There's a bracket you can get, but it appears to not be in stock anywhere. The Ryzen 3600 does come with its own cooler, but it's apparently a bit noisy. Can't find this bracket: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-%7C-Parts/PC-Components/Cooling/AM4-AMD-Retention-Bracket-Kit-for-Hydro-Series%E2%84%A2-Coolers/p/CW-8960046 (https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-%7C-Parts/PC-Components/Cooling/AM4-AMD-Retention-Bracket-Kit-for-Hydro-Series%E2%84%A2-Coolers/p/CW-8960046)
Hopefully replacing the mobo and cpu isn't that complicated. It's been a while since I attempted this. Do I need thermal paste again?
-
Yes, always use arctic silver 5. Remove any old paste with a dab of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. Apply a small dot of compound and spread to a thin layer with an expired credit or business card.
-
Build didn't last. Started doing a reboot loop in less than 24 hours. RMA'd the motherboard. Getting reboot with new motherboard. RMAing the CPU now. If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas...Tested new RAM and it's fine.

Long awaited update! For my 2019 build I was able to boot by messing with voltage settings in the bios, but I never could get it completely stable - especially when I upgraded my GPU to a 3080 in 2020. Finally now in 2022 I've upgraded my CPU, motherboard, and RAM again. I also got a new case, PSU, and cooler so...basically a new rig.
2022 System:
Motherboard: MSI Pro z690-a DDR4
CPU: Intel 13600k
Cooler: ID Cooling Frostflow x240 (liquid cooler)
GPU: Zotac 3800 Trinity
RAM: Teamforce 16x2 3200mhz DDR4
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow
PSU: MSI MPG A850 GF Gaming
Drives: 500GB m.2, 250GB and 1TB SSD, 4TB HDD
PCIe: Anker USB 3.0 expansion card, OKN Wifi 6E AX5400
I do a lot more work on my PC now, and this rig is great at both gaming and as a workstation!
