Dragon Age Discussion (spoiler warning)
« on: December 31, 2009, 12:08:26 am »
Ok so I just recently got Dragon age and I'm creating this thread to discuss the game with those of you that have it. Please feel free to openly discuss bosses, characters, events, etc.

First question: What race did you play, what class, what origin, and did you enjoy it?

I guess I will start.

I chose dwarf as my race. I then selected rogue as my class. The origin I chose was commoner. I enjoyed being a thug and having to run errands for a crime lord. I also enjoyed pissing off everyone in ostagar by beating every warrior cast in the arena. It was also pretty fun killing the crime lord and getting the aedcuan mace from Duncan for killing him.

So long as I breathe, I live. So long as I live, I fight. So long as I fight, I triumph!

I completed it yesterday - the only gripe for me is that even though I did a Blitz through on the story (roughly 30 hours) I still felt that Bioware could've added so much more. I guess that's where the DLC comes in then.

I started as a Human Noble Warrior... I thoroughly enjoyed it. Compared to the Dalish, City Elf and Mage Origins it is the best story - I have yet to play the other Origins.

The voice acting is either good - Alistair, Duncan and Morrigan are very, very good - or very, very bad ala the dying solider at Ostagar and Arl Eamon's brother to name but a few. Oh and don't forget Marjoire or what ever her name is who's voice actor is obviously a red neck trying to do a French accent *shudder*

I LOVED the adult tones... even though it was a fantasy game, I still loved the fact that the human race were indeed human; the mention of torture, drinking, sex etc. just made the game seem that much more real. This game is the first to make me feel like the hero.

Another gripe is that the Archdemon was far too easy... :(

Human Noble - Warrior - Zerker / Templar for me.

I chose to use 2 handed weapons while on my play through with this guy cause I love 2 handed weapons, and the fact that there's a passive skill that makes me immune to knock down and stun effects was way too sexy to pass up.  Plus having the berserker subclass with its massive attack increase while it's active, plus the templars ability to drain mana / be uber resistant to magic made me a force to be reckoned with lmao.  Quite honestly I loved every minute of the game.  My only gripe I would have to say is how everyone runs while in combat...they look so fucking goofy when chasing after someone, yet look badass when they're standing and attacking.

I also rolled a Dwarf Noble warrior with the sword and shield setup, but holy fuck it took forever to kill shit compared to my 2 hander character lmao.  I also tried out rogues for a bit, but quite honestly I'm just not a good rogue in any fantasy game...or mage...although I do want to try the spellsword subclass when I make a mage character to see if I can balance warrior style fighting with mage spells....thus making a hybrid class of sorts.

I love Leliana's voice actor though the most.  And Oghrem as well!

City Elf - Rogue - Assassin/Duelist

I had been looking forward to this game for a LONG time, and I think in doing so I over-hyped it. I could have played it at it's release, but for financial reasons I had to wait until Christmas to get it. I got the version with the free DLC content that ads Shale as a party member, not sure what the name of it is though.

Overall I was instantly pleased with this game cosmetically. My rig isn't any m17x, but it was still able to handle the fantastic graphics well enough if I turned down a few of the settings (while still maintaining a 1440x900 resolution, thank you very much).

When it comes to RPGs, I'm a major completionist. I explore every nook and cranny before progressing to the next cell, and would curse myself for not getting everything I can out of a game as big as this. Thusly, I played it slowly and oftentimes found myself reloading a previous save just to see how things could have turned out differently. Even now I'm reluctant to play, afraid that I might get this game over with too quickly. So far I've spent roughly 20 hours playing, and I've only just got Zevran in my party (that's after you recruit your first major faction, I believe).

My biggest problem with this game so far is that it could have been taken so much farther. I notice constantly where I myself could have written a certain quest or conversation to extend far beyond where the developers stopped, and would have liked a little more beef in certain areas. Consequentially; the writing is, while fantastic, often cliche and predictable, enabling me to predict the possible outcomes of any conversation or quest before I finish it. On an unrelated note, Archery in this game is pathetically worthless as a standalone combat option, and despite the fact that I could easily mod this game and fix it, I always feel like I'm pouring shitty ketchup on gourmet food when I put mods in a game as massive and impressive as this one.

Overall Dragon Age Origins has and continues to satisfy the tabletop roleplayer within me, and I plan to squeeze as many hours out of it as I can. I've also only played through one origin, and I will definitely make another character after my current one if only to try the rest of the origin stories. Probably not what you were going for when you asked for feedback, but it's mine nontheless.

Human Noble has to be the most tragic origin story, with the Dwarf Noble origin story the most enraging (enraging as in what happens, not frustrating) by far I would say.  Give those 2 a shot first Orphaeus when you do make a new character.

Dwarf noble just pissed me off. When I came back to orzammar I knew exactly who I was siding with.

Exactly!!  They did such a badass job at making you hate a specific character for that origin story it was ridiculous!  Human Noble got me real mad with Arl Howe as well, but nowhere near as bad as with the Dwarf Noble start

Yeah heard about that last week you supposedly get new party members  and other goodies. But my big question is what if I had my character sacrifice himself?

It says that you can start as a Warden from Orlais if you do.

I finally finished this.

I was a human noble dual wielding swords. I was trying to model him off of my Jedi Sentinel...heh.

So, spoilers...

I end up screwing Leliana because I was a sucker for her goofy accent. Zevron was a dick, so I never did anything with him. Turns out that was the right thing to do, because at one point he turned on me and attacked me! So I put him out of his misery.

In the end, I decided to have a love demon child with Morgainne so that I could see her naked. I made Alistair king, even though he's a whiny bitch, I didn't trust the daughter of the evil dude. She got locked away. I became the Chancellor but decided to travel for a while so that Leliana and I could get our rocks off.

Everybody seemed to be happy in the end except those freakin dwarves. I sided with Herrigon or Hannigon or whatever his name is, and I guess he got sick (or poisoned) and everyone started fighting again. They even went and found that forge I destroyed and made a new golem. Sorry, but the dwarves are just beyond help...lol.

Is Awakening worth playing?

Just finished Awakenings with my Human Noble Bez/Templar... Definitely worth it. Once again Bioware brings forth its exemplary story telling skills and deliver an excellent epilogue to Origins. Now it's not as fleshed out in terms of character development but it's still keeps the same level of immersion as Origins. It may not be as long as Origins but it is only an expansion and a good way to pass time for DA2 and SWTOR to come out. Now I'm off to replay Origins with my new Elf Mage Bloodmage/Arcane Warrior. Maybe after that I'll check out a dwarf rogue or something along those lines.

SPOILERS AHOY:

I always play as the Human Noble - the most tragic story in my opinion. Tbone; how much of the 'friend meter' did you build with all your companions? If you hardly did (except for Leliana) then download the feastday gifts (free, I think) via the main menu - gives 50+ points of approval.

Leliana was as bland. End of. If I persue a romance arc, it's always with Morrigan; once you get to high approval, she's a very, very interesting character.

At the moment I'm currently halfway through with a HN and am going for the ending with:
*Anora and my HN as King.
*God-Baby with Morrigan (for extra depth in the Witch Hunt Campaign < must play; especially with the 'Love' rating - can be an awesome ending for the Warden as a whole).
*Loghain becomes my companion (this guy also has an immensely deep backstory and persona; you learn why he betrayed the GW and the King only if you spare him, take him to Ostagar (RtO addon) and have high approval.
*Harden Alistair's personality so he's not such a whiney bitch.
*Harden Leliana's personality so she's not soppy.
*Side with Behlen (Dwarf - spelling).
*Side with the Elves (always do, can't bring myself to side with the wolves).
*Destroy the reavers/dragon worshipers; don't get the specialisation but ah well.
*Kill BOTH high dragons in the game; Flemeth and 'Andraste'.
*Help Shale discover *her* past.

This game is so deep, I love it. Then again this is my god knows how many playthrough, so I can only play it for an hour max at a time.
