Planet Maps
« on: December 15, 2011, 10:18:54 am »
Hey folks.

Was curious if anyone knew of any sites that have the basic world maps (not galaxy map)? This would be very handy for future tools...

I'm running smuggler, so can do a screen dump of the areas I go to... perhaps we should start a collection that we can manipulate (i.e. add all data points/coords)?

I kinda hoped that it would be up somewhere already...

We could probably do a google map again... like I did for Darkfall? Remember?

We'd just need to go around collecting the hi-res images with the mag tool.

Don't believe everything you think.

I like this lots.

Soon as I'm in I'll get started on Ord Mantell as an example.

Excellent.
This will help old and new alike. :)

So.. high res images with the mag tool?
That sounds... quite annoying :) Do you mean using the magnifying glass on the map tools and screenshot each section you magnify? This might take some time! :P

Would also need to add in coords if possible.

Anyway... still early days!

So, before I put together any more of these, how does this look?

The full-size version is 1792x1536. Yes, that's as clear as it gets. If this works, let me know and I can get the rest put together this evening/tonight.

Sared, man love never seemed so tempting before... but since I'm far too far away, a simple awesome will have to do for now.
"Awesome"!

Lithium, seem good resolution for Google Maps?

You probably want at least 2-4 times that resolution if not more. All depends on the depth you want to go. Each zoom level deeper grows by a factor of 4^N 'squares'.

The second (1792x1536) is the highest resolution available (for that area). For example, the main Coruscant map comes out to 5888x9472, but is just the top-level map. Below that, do you have a way to transition to the sub-area maps?

Well no, that's why it kind of needs to be stitched together if you want hi res.

Finished Coruscant. Below is the direct overview map converted to jpeg.

The full-size is, well, a little different. Had to upload separately, but a hell of better resolution. Can download the full-size ~10MB PNG here.

The next step I think would be to superimpose the sub-section maps over this image, unless you can do area transitions based on depth maybe? (Not familliar with Google maps API)

Just about any crazy thing is possible with google maps. When I get some time between playing the game I'll start working on a demo map.

Awesome! If I get low-rez versions of the top maps would that give you decent placeholders until I get the hi-rez versions put together?
