Title: Experimenting with the theme
Post by: Manic Velocity on September 28, 2011, 06:27:41 pm
This is something I've been working on, on-and-off for the past few months:

http://inspireatwill.com/fa_test/

It's just a mirror of our homepage, so don't bother trying to log in.  :)  I'd like to get some feedback on the header logo and the general look of the theme.

I've been feeling for a while that the visuals of our main access site could do with some sprucing up, so I figured I'd take a crack at it.  Perhaps if its well-received it will be implemented.

Give your harshest critiques!

Although I do think that our current front page could use some work. I dont think this one is the one to replace it.  It seems to lack that "crisp" and Clear feel to it for me.

I know it pervades most of the website, and this is more just a criticism in general and not leveled against you specifically.

I hate and loathe with all of my being the Gunship font that we use. It is vile and disgusting and if we could get rid of it for something more simple I'd jump for joy. Of course, that won't happen. You've done a good job, Manic.

Manic's site feels very clean and crisp to me.

You understand that the center logo is a hologram so it should be slightly blurry right?

Hard to pull off well with static images, perhaps gif or flash are in order?

actually I did not expect to see any difference as I am not the most observant of fellows and have always enjoyed the look and feel of our website. That being said, I think your updated theme is tip top. Like it a lot.

I agree completely.  It's on the list of fixes.

I wasn't expecting such a positive response.  I'm glad everyone likes it.  :)

Just curious what it is specifically that you don't like about it.  I don't think it will change anytime either, but I personally like it.  I've seen some "sci-fi" fonts that are practically unreadable.  Gunship seems like a nice blend of sci-fi and modern.

so when do we get this image to replace the current header? (http://inspireatwill.com/fa_test/The%20Furious%20Angels%20%20%20%20Follow%20the%20Angel%20%28htmlpages%29%20Files/new_logo.gif)

feels much more alive and a lot more on-theme with TOR (in my opinion), would be a nice update to go along with the fact we're less than 70 days away from getting a new game :)

The banner is the thing I like the least :(

Our current one matches our homepage. The new one does not.

I'm confused by this.  My first attempt at a theme a little over a year ago was turned down because it was too grey without a lot of contrast.  So you created the current theme to address those concerns.  But now looking at the homepage I see a lot of grey and little contrast, which does not match the black and blue of the current theme.

Since we don't yet have an in-game presence, and because we are a secretive group by nature, our website is really the only thing people have on which to base their opinion of us.  We get a lot of props on the quality of the recruitment challenge, which is the result of a lot of hard work from a lot of people.  But that is only one side of the website.  It would not hurt us at all to extend that quality to the side that all of us see every day.

My design is not perfect.  But I know that a collaboration among our very talented web designers could produce an awesome theme that FA can be proud to show off.  And TOR is just around the corner.

"The Overseas Recruiter"?

It's true.  NoCry is always just around the corner.  Never let your guard down.

I'm confused by this.

The theme of our site needs to try and stay consistent. Take a look:

See how it matches? Your current banner in no way matches the rest of the site. The current theme is inspired by a minimalistic approach that I actually saw in some Arkham City artwork (http://thefuriousangels.com/index.php?topic=6556). Mostly black and white, with the white bleeding into a glow. Any color is very specific.

Your current banner doesn't match the rest of the site and, as you mention, is still too grey:

I told you I can get on board with the rounded borders as long as they are dark enough, and I don't think you can accuse me of not allowing a collaborative environment on this. Take a look at my original inspiration and the vibe I'm trying to accomplish. Also take a look at the graphics we have for /home, /orders, /research, /holovids, etc. All that would need to be changed if the banner was changed, which means the entire style/theme I'm going for would be changing, and I don't want that.

Like this?

The problem with having too much contrast, that is to say stark black-and-white, is that it's difficult to convey depth without using at least some grey.  The Arkham City artwork uses a lot of grey to define the shadows and curvature of the renders.

I'm looking at it on my phone at the moment, but that looks like a big improvement. Is it possible to throw up that darker version on a demo site that includes the home page (once you login).

Here's what it would look like after you logged in:

The black doesn't feel very "angelic" to me.  Seeing our logo in dark tones feels too Sith-y.

I love that banner. However, I'm a little tipsy so that might be biasing me just a little.

One suggestion. Whatever banner gets chosen, can you remove the box around the header wrapper? That way, it's not a box within a box that holds the actual banner.

Kind of like this: http://i.imgur.com/1z7bO.png

The code for the header is tied into AutoTheme, and we can't find what would kill the border without killing the whole header. The images themselves are tied to all the block images, so if we make them invisible images, we lose the border around everything.

If we use that banner, we should probably switch out the borders as well, yes?

The borders can easily be made to resemble the banner.  But I suggest they be made slightly different so the design does not appear to be overused.  I'll provide an example later tonight.

I still think the black angel symbol should be reconsidered, for the reasons I stated.

Here's an example of new borders, slightly more subdued than the banner.  I also updated the text on the menu banners to see how it looked.  If possible, I'd like to fix the borders on those images so that they are truly rounded.

I really like that, but at the same time it doesn't fit well at all with the main picture in the middle. It has sharp edges that jut out dramatically when compared with your bubble boxes.

That would be fixed.

The images have round edged, but they're all layered against a black square which fills in the curves, making them appear to have sharp corners.

Yeah, I tried to look at the source to see if I could make any suggestions based on that. I also cried at the tables. What CMS is being used to run the site? I've been playing with Drupal for a few months, and it is a great CMS to run a community from.
