All I know is the writers made Charlie a very dark character in this last episode.  He has completely snapped.  I have a feeling Charlie is next to get the axe.

Well, we know it is a Dharma project:

"Dharma (Sanskrit: धर्म, or (roughly) law or way) is the way of the higher Truths. Dharma forms the basis for philosophies, beliefs and practices originating in India. The oldest of these, widely known as Hinduism, is Sanatana Dharma or Eternal Dharma. Buddhism, Ayyavazhi, Jainism and Sikhism also retain the centrality of Dharma. In these traditions, beings that live in harmony with Dharma proceed more quickly towards Moksha, Dharma Yukam, Nirvana, or personal liberation. Dharma also refers to the teachings and doctrines of the various founders of the traditions, such as Gautama Buddha in Buddhism and Mahavira in Jainism. As the religious and moral doctrine of the rights and duties of each individual, Dharma can refer generally to religious duty, and also mean social order, right conduct, or simply virtue."

So on the basic level, we can assume that there is some force that is helping them proceed to personal liberation. We know that the good people are taken away. People with skeletons still in their closet are left behind. The question is how is it determined who is good and bad? We know the numbers seem to start a chain of events that lead people to the island.

The black cloud of death represents people's past. They can either continue to run from it or they can face it. If your not careful, your past will take you over. There is strong evidence of this in the episode with the drug dealing priest. When he confronts the cloud, if you freeze frame when the camera goes through it, you can see lightning flashes revealing images of his backstory.

The problem is that there are flaws with every theory. Purgatory is the most common theory, yet that doesn't really explain the video talking about a science experiment, the radio station frequencies, etc. At the same time, there seems to be supernatural, religious forces working on the island. Prophetic dreams hinting at baptism, religious symbolism, the judgement of a man's life. The island is an odd combination of science and the supernatural. The question is which is it? And how can it be both?

I tend to lean towards them all being dead and are LOST souls that are working through Dharma/Purgatory to attempt to achieve Nirvana/heaven, but that doesn't really explain why some people died during the crash, some were taken away shortly after, and others are left. And how can you die if you are already dead? Of course, that's a quote now isn't it. They definitely seem to want you to THINK that they are not alive, which means there must be a twist!

Oh, and how can someone be born in Purgatory? Hmm...

One of the writers also stated during a recent LOST podcast that "DHARMA" was an acronym as well.

Notice the "CVII, CVIII" - Roman numerals? 107, 108, etc?  Apparently the map shows the DHARMA stations, but one of them is scribbled out.  I can see the word "Accident" at the bottom, but I can't make out the rest.  Also, the circle with the arrow pointing towards the Swan states "I AM HERE".

Damn good episode and next week is going to be sweet.

Looks like Sayid will finally get to do what he wanted to do to this "other."

lalala. I just finished watching all of season 2, except tonights ep. Which I'll watch tormorrow. Lost shall fill the void in my life that BSG left (until Oct). Once Lost is over, 4400 starts again, and considering one of the main character (show wise) is a professor at my college (and the lab he works in does not exist) I really want to watch more.

LOST got better towards the end, but still it wasn't that good. Can't beat ye olde Futurama or Simpsons.
