S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl
« on: March 25, 2007, 02:03:40 am »
This game is basically Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but with guns and more action, thrown into the survival-horror genre.  This game was first announced in '01, but development hitches held it back until now - but don't worry, graphically, it's almost on par with Half Life 2.

Anyway, I recommend it for any fans of Oblivion's open-ended style of FPS/RPG gameplay, and I thought I'd give it a mention since I'm such a sucker for FPS's.  If someone does manage to get it and wants to give multiplayer a run, let me know (even though the MP portion of the game looks pretty lame, to be honest).

Yeah, I got my hands on a copy as well. I thought the game was a bit...distracting. That is to say, I play the game with every detail cranked up, at 1680x1050, and the game is just so brilliantly detailed and vibrant, that I find it distracts from what's going on in the game.

I also noticed the developers of STALKER, didn't really spend much time in the area of educating you about how things work, what's going on, etc. etc. It just seemed to plop you in the world with a pair of Binoculars and say, "Have fun!"

While this works for some guys, it's rather slowed me down as far as progression. Also, the game seems rather difficult. At novice difficulty, for example, when doing the first mission (Helping Nimble), I died a good 12 times or so, despite several different approaches to the mission.

In conclusion, I'm a sucker for eye candy, I love FPS's, and from what I can tell so far the game has a damned good story potential. Very reminiscent of Fallout. I'd give this game a 7.5 out of 10. Not perfect, but not total rubbish either. I'd recommend giving the game a try at least once for a good hour to see how you like it :)

I got it the day it came out expecting more than i should have. Im not a real big fan of it but I guess for some people it might be ok.  The accuracy of the guns are shite* with the pistol you might land 1 of 8 shots unless they are right on top of you.  Another thing I dislike is when you hit I for inventory it doesn't pause the game around you so while youre looking through your backpack you could be getting chewed up by some radioactive dog or pig (yes a pig)
