Well I know both Manic and I have recently gotten nice dslr's - and I like showing off some cool shots, but think they clog up and slow down the Randomness thread a bit. So, I figured lets have a thread for pics; that is, pics of anything. Amusing/portraits/drawings/photographs. With that said, if the powers that be feel the Randomness thread will suffice for posting multiple images, feel free to lock this. =)

Last week we took a completely random drive to some park not too far from our house. Didn't get a whole lot (at least that's uploaded yet) but I liked these shots. The first for it's reflection, and the second because of the water on it's back and the drop into the water. Blown up to 18MP size this is incredible. We also have wind farms near us. There are nearly 300 windmills in the area spanning a HUGE amount of land in central IL. These things are enormous - about 215 feet tall with three 85 foot turbines. Great photos Fuse. What camera do you have again? Also, what lenses? My buddy just got a 7D, gonna take it out for a spin later this week. Maybe rent some Zeiss prime lenses. Will post if I get some cool shots.

I shoot with a Canon T2i with battery grip, hand strap, and generic shotgun mic when shooting video. (Cell pic (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs182.ash2/44482_10150235053945103_652045102_14443834_2311143_n.jpg)) I've seen a lot of people say it's very similar to a 7D with the APS-C sized sensor instead. So nearly as good images, and about equal quality video - obviously depending on what lens you use.
As far as glass...I own four lenses:
Canon 18-55mm IS 3.5-5.6 -T2i Kit lens -Decent on quality. Good kit lens, but I just upgraded. Any of my really good images have really come off the 50mm or the Tamron.
The Canon 50mm 1.8 is an AMAZING lens for ONLY $100! If I'm in a situation I know I won't need a zoom (portraits for instance) or I'm in low-light, this has been the go-to. If you own a Canon, you absolutely need to own this lens. The Tamron was kind of an impulse buy. I was actually looking for one of Sigma's wide angle zooms in 2.8. They didn't have one, but had this. I had read reviews of it quite a bit and decided to pull the trigger. I mainly wanted it right then because the next day I was attending the Restoring Honor rally in DC and wanted to get some good pictures without having to rely solely on my prime. I am not a professional photographer, so this lens is perfect for me so far. They had an 18-200 which would have been a great pickup as well, but I know the image quality suffers on that lens compared to this one. I bought the VC version because I also plan to take movies with this. It's no L series, but it is a great walk around lens at least %50 the cost. I just totally geeked out reading that post Fuse, thanks for that.
I'm really going to look into that 50mm. It's no surprise that you think that one gives you your best images. It's your fastest lens and at 50mm, it's the closest approximation to the human eye. When I'm shooting a scene that's not stylized, I always start with a 50mm and decide if I need to go to up to an 85 or down to a 35 or 28 depending on if I think the shot calls for it. I've only been shooting video with primes for the last year and a half, but optics is quickly becoming one of the things that fascinate me. I should look for some footage I've shot in that time and show you guys.

I tried using a reversed 50mm prime against my 17-50mm for macro shots... turned out ok, but I can tell I need some more practice and need to play with settings.

I really digged the macro stuff, but the reversed 50mm on my tamron didn't come out so well. So I bought a couple extension tubes. $20 off ebay got me two sets. Sucks that they're not powered, so manual control of everything is needed, but I've had some really good first tests.

At %100 you can see my reflection taking the shot and a good view of the garbage cans, buildings, and people behind me. This was a three layer approach. Background with a bleached filter, the car with some sat and lum adjustments, and the bumper from the original shot. The mapping lines weren't as clean as I should have made them, but they're hard to notice unless you're looking for them.

I'm doing a shoot today and tomorrow and needed a good portrait lens so I rented one of (if not THE) best available: Canon 85mm 1.2L II
I only got a couple I'm pleased with so far - but should have more after the shoots by next week. This is the first L series I've really had a chance to shoot with and the fastest I've had in my hands. The DOF is amazing, but is taking a bit to get use to. I'm also finding it more difficult to handhold as well, even though I'm use to my moderately heafty Tamron.
I also realize I'm the only one who posts in here. New members, step up! :)

I'm insanely jealous of that lens you're renting, Fuse.
Here are some family shots I did for my cousin. If you ever want a crash course in proper lighting, take some portrait shots at sunset. One trick I picked up was to have everyone face me with their backs to the sun, and then turn up the brightness on my flash. This provided perfect facial lighting, while the sun gave a nice "glow" around them, and it kept everyone from having to squint or shield their eyes.

There was another photographer out there who was using this old leather chair as a prop with some of the models he had with him. It reminded me of the chair Morpheus sat in during the "Desert of the Real" scene with Neo. I asked if I could take a shot of it against the barren salty shore of the lake, and he was gracious enough to let me. Did some quick editing and came up with this:

Those looks great Manic. Backlit shots can be a pain - I was wrestling with the harsh sun all evening tonight and couldn't quite get shots as good as you did - even with a $2000 lens. I'm totally addicted to this things now and don't want to send it back. I just got home from taking over 330 images of my friends and their 4 daughters. We narrowed them down to about 130 I still have to mess with. We only got around to doing most of the family portraits and tomorrow we're doing each of the girls individually.
In the week that I have this I'm doing this family's stuff, a wedding on Sunday, and also possibly another family shoot for one of my wifes co-workers. I really should charge a little bit.

These were all taken with a T2i and a Canon 85mm 1.2L. For the most part I'm very pleased with the results. Not too bad for the first time trying to do a shoot like this, and also my first time shooting with a lens this fast. The DOF and focus took some getting use to and some I wish I could redo, but the family is very happy with them.

These were taken at my mom's 50th birthday party last weekend. She rented an empty lot in a local mall and held a black light dance party with a bunch of friends and family. We spent about an hour getting painted up, and then turned out the lights and went nuts.

Last weekend I had my first semi-professional photo shoot with my friends Amanda and Kate. I asked Amanda if she'd be willing to do some shots for me so I could get some practice in doing portraits and she agreed. Kate, who works at various theaters around the Salt Lake valley, offered to do hair and makeup.
This shot was entirely Kate's idea, and Amanda was a real trooper about posing topless. There are other shots like this, but this is the only one worth presenting at the moment. This took a bit of post-processing because of my cheap-o lighting setup.

This may sound pervy, but I've been wanting to do a nude/semi-nude photo shoot for a long time. Actually, being a cinematographer, I've been wanting to get experience with love scenes. Again, there's nothing perverted in my intentions. I just want to see if I can do it and what I can bring to the table stylistically.

I was actually a little nervous doing this. When Kate suggested the topless shots, I didn't think Amanda would actually go for it. I was really stressing about keeping Amanda comfortable.
When we finally got set up and started shooting, I noticed I was more concerned about lighting and composition than the fact that I had a half-naked woman in front of me. Whatever tension in the room was gone once Amanda saw I was treating it professionally.
I think it's all in what your intentions are, as you said. If you want it to look tasteful, then that will show through in the final product.

Really proud of this one. I had this idea to see some EVE battleships descending on Salt Lake City, and I knew the perfect vantage point to get the shot. So I took my camera on a hike and spent the rest of the afternoon in photoshop.

No filters on the lens, some post in Lightroom. I have to admit, my wife edited these so I'm unsure exactly what was applied. Looks like a subtle bleach on the first, perhaps the second - and she's a huge fan of vignetting.

I'm seeing a ton of these 30-day picture things on facebook and think I want to do a version of it for my blog and photo site...
I need ideas though. What I'[m thinking is that I want to take a photograph each day for the month of May - but more than just "here's what I ate" or "Look, a duck!". I'd like them to be decent shots - with a limit of 2 types per week. For instance, each week I'll only have 2 portraits or 2 landscapes - no more; and never of the same item, place, or person. I'm forming ideas and guidelines for it now, but would love to get ideas from you guys. Manic, you up for doing this and see what we come up with?

Yeah, I'm the same way - that's why i decided to do this. In fact, I almost missed today. I had to go out for eggs and decided to take the camera out with (because i slacked all day) It's rainy, and night, I only had one lens and I left my tripod at home - so this was the best I could come up with.
I think I'll get to Thursday and say screw it and delete my May thread idea. lol

Years ago my friends and I did something similar with artwork. We were always really into sketching, so we decided to do a sketch every day for a year. Didn't matter what it was. By the end of the second week everyone was doing dumb stick figure comics just to have something to put on their blog.
I think those kind of things are best left to a week or so at most.

A few shots I managed to get from the entrance into my subdivision. These are litterally within eyeshot from my backyard. And this is only a fraction of a fraction of the damage caused... no casualties as a result, though the building I show the looks collapsed had people trapped inside. Only a few minor injuries, though.. not bad for an EF-5 Tornado.

Aahhh, good luck! She seemed like the type who might be up for something out of the ordinary - so be creative and you won't fall into the realm of cliche. I've been messing with light painting which will be one of my next few shots for today or tomorrow... might be something to play with on her...?
Light painting = 30s exposure in a completely dark room. Narrow beam flashlight briefly on what you want shown at different angles. So far I've gotten decent results.

I read a blog post a few months back from a guy who did this with a whiskey ad. He dimmed the lights and just used a soft flashlight to paint around and through the whiskey bottle, then combined the shots in photoshop. It looked amazing and really brought out the color in the whiskey.
I'd definitely like to try it some time.

You should try putting gels on more than one flashlight and painting other colors on different points of the subject. Like a nice deep blue would look sweet over the petals, while a yellow or green would make the stem/leaves pop.

I invite competition, but really it's difficult enough to do it everyday - I'm pretty disappointed with my last week.
My 430EX II came in a couple days ago, but I'm still horrible working with flash. This thing does make it easier though.
My 24-70 2.8L, $1400 lens comes in tomorrow!!!!! Anyone want to buy a 17-50 2.8 with vibration control for a canon EFS mount?

So I tried out another tutorial I found for inking... Unfortunately I don't have a lighting setup, my flash is only on-camera, the only tank I had was a dirty/scratched plastic one, and I have no gels. With all that said, I think some came out ok...

Her eyes are actually the least edited thing in the photo, aside from maybe her hair. She has naturally large, blue irises. She got some "doll eyes" contacts as part of her halloween costume that make them really stand out. All I did was up the saturation a bit and whiten the sclera.
