Being that I'm both a Libertarian and a viewer of Fox News Channel I had a vested interested in this. One could imagine that I should be livid given the fact that the philosophical libertarian Paul was shafted, however, I am also a cynic and accepting of the outcome.
Because our democracy is shaped by "winner take all" majority, we will always have two main political parties at the national level. I should be more specific. Here is a political spectrum chart.

The Red line is what Americans are used to and what they will vote for. The red box in the middle is the centrist zone. The Blue line or dots really is what we call "fringe" and as you can guess, the only way fringe politicians excel is if they localize their efforts (meaning it's easier to get your ideas spread locally at the city/county/district level than it is at the state/federal level) or they moderate their views and move toward the "zone" (Bill Clinton ran as a centrist).
Give you an example, G.W. Bush is in the lower right, someone like Hillary would be in the upper left. They are "polarizing" people, not much room for middle ground with them. The majority of federal level politicians have to moderate their views to win the most votes and financial support. So you wonder why it seems not much gets done at the federal government level? Well it's because not many Presidents or U.S. Senators wake up and think "Gee, what can I do today to stick my neck out and commit political suicide today?" (some second term presidents and retiring senators do).
So why did I just ramble on for several paragraphs?
Well, as much as I'd love to see a Republican like Ron Paul guiding our country towards Jeffersonian ideals I don't believe he's electable at the national level. He is too far outside the comfort zone of too many Americans. That means it makes more sense to put people on TV who have a chance to win. I agree with FNC on this one because even though the Republican candidates don't stand a chance in the general election, at least the ones the invited have or had a chance at the Republican nomination and that means FNC looks more "in line" with the chart above.
Now someone like Dr. Paul would be great to have for interviews, open forums, specials, etc, but not for a presidential debate.
Also for the record, I disagree with Paul's specific beliefs on abortion and evolution (and religion for that matter).
