Title: Guild Wars
Post by: Anonymous on May 06, 2004, 12:53:44 pm
This is a title that is coming out later this year with a fantasy-based theme:

http://www.guildwars.com

I mention it only because during E3 (May 12-14th) they have a free trial where everyone can log into the same world.  The game itself sounds modular, wherein you can log in; participate in a solo, group, or raid-sized expedition from a central hub.  I think all of these missions will be instanced (meaning that they're generated specifically for the person(s) undertaking the task, and no outside players can harass that group).

It's free to play, free to download, and is designed with extremely small system requirements so anyone here should be able to hop on.

This might be a good way for the leadership to evaluate possible recruits, such as myself, and see those with leadership qualities shine.  It should give an impression in three days time, where as forums would take weeks to get a good impression of someone.

In the end, it should be a fun way for everyone to get and know everyone, nothing but positives here.

Sounds good... but
Quote

This is a opportunity for you to play Guild Wars months before release, months even before beta testing.

Can't see the game being that bug free months before beta testing. but if they say it is gonna be like that then we might aswell try it, after all its free.

anything to be with our shipmates.  We'll see how good it is, but a great idea.

Im with you :)..

Maybe not the hardest game to remove bugs from, considering the limited possibilities..

I cant the THAT bad, since they are letting us try it before betas...

But I still think we are in for a buggy ride :).

If I may, I suggest downloading the client now and creating an account.  The day it launches will likely be flooding their download networks with traffic, and the application may be more difficult to grab.

I also learned that once you log in and create the account, leave your game up for a minute and watch the upper right corner of the screen.  A number and MB will appear.  Apparantly you're downloading about 32 MB of information while creating the account.  I did as much as I could so I can simply log in when midnight rolls around.

I got the little program that brings up the account screen, I was a little unsure if that was the client because it was only 12 mb..

When you create your account, you're looking at a camp.  In the upper right you should notice your download.

I already downloaded it, but I can't run it yet cuz my crappy old video card doesn't support 3D.

I am still but a newcomer, myself, but I am hesitant about evaluating new members in something that seems rather unlike The Matrix Online in gameplay.

It's not an evaluation as much as it is a chance to get used to one another and build some teamwork skills. It would be a good opportunity for us to test out Ventrilo in game as well.

Sounds good, I don't think that I will be able to play though, because of exams and all, but I will look into it when i finish on the 16th June, sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Yup ima surely d/l it...great thinking Asha this is a really great way to practice our teamskills, and for our captains (if they don't already) to show and build up thier leadership and decsion making skills.

Sounds fun =)  Although I'm not sure how much cohesive raid-like interaction we'll have since we have to build up our characters a bit first, neh?

I'll have it downloaded and can log in around 4ish PST.

I don't really have any plans to get anything accomplished.  It just happened to be an entirely free venue, available for net distribution, with no costs and extremely low system requirements.

Essentially, it's like getting free tickets to concert where we can all meet.

I've noticed that if you pull up the client and just let it sit at the client screen, there's more to download everyday.  So appartently they're staggering the client release; I'll be grabbing as much as I can prior to tomorrow night.

I am, I am up for playing anything. I think it would be the best way for us to get to know one another. Personally, Id find it easier to get to know people playing with them than on a forum...but thats just me :)

Ill go check it out now...

Wow, that was quicker than expected. Took less than 10 mins to get into the game from downloading it off the site. I created a monk called Tubias if anyone is playing it. For a beta testing freebie its good, I have been impressed by the graphics too. Give me your details and Ill try to get in touch :)

A friend was able to log in last night and said the game was worth checking out.  Good graphics, good interface, fun gameplay.  The way the game works, there ARE qualified areas for soloing, grouping, and raiding and you actually download the zone as you enter it.  While no specific reference was made, my friend didn't complain about the download times, so I don't expect it to be so bad.

So the floodgates should be open, if you have it go ahead and log in.

Guild Wars = Probably worth your time.

That's the easiest way to say it right there.  With a download time of less than one minute, a registration time of about the same length, and hours of fun ahead; I'd advise you to pick this up if you aren't doing anything else.

Forget immersion, forget realistic worlds.  This is simply a fantasy game design to remove all the speedbumps, and get you grouped and playing as quickly as possible.  There are several social areas, all of which you can teleport to instantly (again, immersion isn't the name of the game).  Towns and the opening to dungeons are meant as social hubs to meet with people, trade, and form up groups.

Once a group is formed, the leader starts the mission and you're loaded into the instanced mission itself.  I did one mission several times, and once it was finally accomplished, we moved along to a second tier of missions for that area.  All in all, it was pretty cool, and because the group dynamic changed it didn't get old.

As for FA in the game?  I think it's a nifty little way for us to get together and get some playtime prior to MxO.  Check it out, I'm on as Asha Aesir, and use the messaging system, I can't make any sense of the whispers.

Registered as Muse of Iliad.

I, uh, haven't figured everything out yet.

I could tell I was a n00b when Captain somebody said "Muse, are you okay? Do you need help?"  ... and I actually responded that I was fine.  I then saw the same guy killing three golems, which kept being ressurected by the Ressurection Golem and I warned him that he needed to kill the Ressurection Golem first.  You can imagine my surprise that it was an NPC!  *sigh*

Game play is okay, although not fabulously engaging for me.

<rolling>

I'm sorry, that isn't gentleman-like of me, but the, "I was talking to an NPC" part is always fun.

I've found using the message system is the most concrete means of communication, especially with people on at different times.  I'll be on Ventrillo in about an hour and see if we can't organize something for this evening.

Orasu, I did get your message, and I'll get back with you tonight.
