Ahh! My hard drive!

Well this sucks.  I go to boot up my computer today and everything is going fine.  Then it gets to the windows loading screen and I hear this whirring, clicking sound.  I look at the hard drive light and it is going crazy with the sound flashing on and off repeatedly.  So I figured it to be my hard drive because it has been acting a little funny for a while.  I turned off the computer and unplugged the hard drive and then turned the computer back on to do a system check that will change the settings.  I then plugged everything back into it and rebooted.  This time it booted into windows after quite a while.  So I am a pretty lucky guy.  So I have spent a better part of today making a whole lot of backups of important stuff.  So it looks like I'm in the market for a new hard drive(s).  Does Raid 0 actually help that much?  Because I've been wanting to make a nice big 4 hard drive array to see, but like usual money played the deciding factor there.  Oh, well we'll see what happens.

Seagate's are good.  You might want to look into a redundant data storage solution (read: Raid) just incase something like this happens again.  With the price of hard drives these days, it really pays to have some kind of redundant data storage in place.  I think you can get some really good SATA drives (make sure you have a Serial ATA board), 80GB apiece, for around $70.

RAID 0 is for striping your drives together.  Which increases your chance of having data loss.  (let's say you have 2 drives striped and one goes out then you loose all data).   RAID 1 is mirroring.  Which gives you twice the fault tolerance.  Basically it takes half the amount of your harddrives and makes them duplicated the other half.  this is so if one hard drive dies the other is there in it's place.

It, i guess, depends on your needs.  Personally I have a raid controller that supports RAID 0+1.  Which gives me striping and mirroring.  (granted I am using 4 harddrives to do so. )

As far as which hard drives are best?  meh...  I dunno... I prefer maxtor...  western dig used to suck but they are ok now.  Seagate I dont have any problems with.  hitachi are good too.  Just find somethign with a good warranty if dollars are concerned.  Otherwise I would reccomend Maxtor.
