Going to need some upgrades for the DK2
« on: March 20, 2014, 01:26:13 pm »
Pretty informative thread about the tech specs that will be needed for the DK2 and CV1:  http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/20wir9/pc_specs_requirements_for_dk2/

Crap, and here I thought I'd only need to fork over about $350.  It's been a while since I've upgraded, so yeah.  I guess it's time.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to fit upgrades into my budget as well. The timing of buying a new video card is pretty important - trying to get the best bang for my buck.

Basically, with a 75hz refresh rate, you need to be able to run games at 75 FPS at 1080p. Assuming the consumer version is 90hz, you'll need to run 90 FPS at 1440p!

One thing that may make this MUCH better is Carmack's Time Warp technology. It doesn't sound like they've perfected it yet, but if they do, it could turn this on its head.

From my understanding, think of Time Warp as Bullet Time. Let's say you can only render at 30 FPS, but the refresh rate is 90hz. In order to keep low persistence and head tracking smooth, you still need 90 frames. I believe what Time Warp does is it stores a frame in memory so that if the new frame isn't ready, it displays the old frame BUT warps it based on head tracking information. The reason I compare it to Bullet Time is it reminds me of the world/Matrix moving slow/frozen while your view of it is at regular speed.

It won't look like Bullet Time, but the end result is that even if your frames drop and the world lags a bit, the head tracking and low persistence will remain smooth, preventing simulator sickness.

A GTX 770 being the *BARE MINIMUM*... yeesh.

This is gunna hurt.  The good news is, the Nvidia 8XX series are supposed to be launching soon.  This should REALLY help drop the higher end 7XX cards in price or allow some more future proofness in the new cards.

Anyone have an idea when the 8XX cards are supposed to launch?

I got a GTX 760 last August thinking I was going to be freaking set for a while. Now I'm just below bare minimum for good VR :'(

My 6950's x2 are really showing their age.

I've been needing to upgrade for some time so meh, it's time.  I'll wait until the last possible moment in July to order though.  Hopefully we see some price drops.

Well, I took a hard look at my computer and realized I basically have to start from scratch. I bought this guy in 2009, so nothing is compatible with it anymore.

Assuming I can still use my RAM and HDD, this is what I've put together so far:

Right now it's sitting at close to $840, but if I wait long enough, hopefully that'll go down some. I need to find a way to make some money. Maybe I could sell my gaming laptop, but I'm not sure how much I could get for it...

I've seen May/June, but not from any credible source.

When the 800 series comes out, is something like the GTX 860 going to be cheaper than the GTX 770? Or will the 800 series drive the GTX 770 price down below a GTX 860?

If I remember correctly, 760 was cheaper than 670 or 680 still. It was one of the top graphic cards on passmark for price/performance. Only other cards on the list were cheap old cards.

Yeah I just checked newegg. 670s were still $329-389(though out of stock), 660 was still $250.

Due to the cryptocurrencies, video cards are all kinds of out of whack. Generally the Crypto guys go after the Radeon cards, but those are being driven up in price to the point people are shifting to the GeForce cards, causing an across the board rise in cards. Once the next gen comes out, you might be able to find some last gen cards used for cheap.

I was under the impression that mining was going away from graphics cards and people were starting to use a different tech because basically you end up spending more to power the card than you earn from the mining.

Things like Dogecoin and Lite coin (the alt coins) still can do CPU/GPU mining.  Bitcoin is pretty much useless on older methods now.
