Off Topic / Lits' Friends on Tour... Minneapolis, Chicago GO SEE
« on: August 10, 2011, 04:12:17 pm »
So one of my good buddies is on tour with this band Sugarwall... pretty decent music, emo outfits aside. Very tight players, great stage presence. These guys have a large lady following, as well. So you should go. And meet some chicks. And see a great show. And say hi to my friend (the bass player) and have a drink saluting your favorite faction cheerleader.

Off Topic / Lits at Burning Man
« on: August 27, 2010, 03:53:59 pm »
I'll be leaving Sunday afternoon for Burning Man. It's in the middle of the desert so there will be no phones no lights no motorcars. I will be completely unreachable until at least Monday the 6th or possibly Tuesday the 7th.

I'll be HERE: URL BLACK ROCK CITY (alt+w)

Doing THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArO22tMA7gg
(make sure you watch to at least 5:01 to see the night parties!)

Pictures promised* :)

Off Topic / Little work advice?
« on: March 19, 2010, 06:56:20 pm »
I stupidly went to an interview today for job #3 and got it. They're having me start tonight. There goes my first day off in 8 days :(. Looks like my next day off will be when I have that nervous breakdown I've been looking foreward to, lol.

I don't even know WHY I wanted three jobs, cause now I'm gonna have to pick one to drop and they all have GREAT things about them and they all have really BAD things about them. So my question is: which would you drop?

#1 Waiting tables at La Grande Orange:
-five mins drive time from home
-Saturday and Sunday only 9am-4pm
-$8/hr + (avg) $60 in tips
-nice people, nice food
-possibility for health insurance in 5 months
-annoyingly corporate (I had to sign a statement when I was late for work one day and list things I could do in the future to prevent it.... seriously?)

#2 Receptionist at the Kush Clubhouse
-walking distance from home
-$9.50/hr + tips when I work the hash bar
-full time job M-F... my biggest source of income
-really pretty view of the beach and boardwalk all day
-great discount on inventory
-learning all sorts of things for when marijuana is completely legalized in November, going to be the fastest growing market for employment in California.
-the owner is insane and yells at everyone for no damned reason (needs to smoke a little LESS of his own product) I've thankfully escaped his rampages so far but I don't know how long I can stay under the radar. Any of us could get fired any day for any non-existant reason.
-terribly unorganized, sometimes we don't even have a manager scheduled
-possibility of being shut down completly next month due to proximity to public spaces
-ridiculously long hours: 10:30am-8:30pm with only a 1/2 hour for lunch
-when i'm not busy, they want me to go on the boardwalk and promote...something I swore I'd never do again (HATEIT!)

#3 Swing Shift/foodrunning at Rick's Tavern
-walking distance from home
-short shifts... the longest is only 5 hours (unless I'm waitressing, then 8-9 hour shifts)
-two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday 6-10 (or whenever I get there coming straight from the Clubhouse)
-possibility for moving up to permenant position
Don't know enough about it yet for anything else.

So as you can see, I've set myself up for insanity. If I ditch on the Clubhouse I'll lose my greatest source of income, and only work four days a week, but they may close down next month anyway. If I ditch on LGO I'll lose the possibility of health insurance and all the tips that come with running my ass off for 7 hours and getting yelled at four times a day. But I feel like if I don't have a backup (Rick's) I'm going to be SOL when/if the Clubhouse closes down, and to get into Rick's even on the lowest ground floor is amazing. The turnover there doesn't exist. These are all career waitresses and bartenders who've been there for 10 years, some of them almost 20. But if I'm only working four days a week then I'll be much happier, but way below the money budget I'm comfortable with. It'll be enough to scrape by, but barely.

And keep in mind I'm only doing this till I turn 24 and can get back to school, anyway.

So what would you do? I'd appreciate any advice. If you've ever been in this situation, or can image it, it'd be helpful.
Thanks :)

I just got back from seeing this movie for the second time, and I will say it is extremely well done, poignant, and very resonant.

I HIGHLY recommend everyone go see it.

I would also ask that the conservative republicans in the group also go see it and post their arguments against it (which there will invariably be) because I am in a place where not many people will have an intellignent argument, and I would like to hear both sides, if you please.

I must say that I agree in total with the messeges presented at this time.

Thanks!

(in the intereste of NOT resparking a heated debate, I hope that this could be a time for open discussion without the use of hate mongering by either side; instead perhaps a place of mutual fact posting and education for all)

Off Topic / Columbus Day Approacheth
« on: October 02, 2009, 02:19:57 am »
So with Columbus Day around the corner, I'd thought I'd open a thread, hoping to bring light to who Christopher Columbus actually was, and why I detest this holiday.

1. He collected slaves.
When Columbus first landed in the Bahamas he encountered what was most likely the Taino people, writing back to the sovreighnty that he noted their weapons were far less sophisticated than his own. He said he could "easily conquer and govern them as [he] pleased"

2. He was a child rapist.
He took the majority of the Taino people's young girls (average age 12) and sent them back as "gifts" for sex slavery to his family and friends, keeping some for himself.

3. He was a genocidist.
When he was done exhausting the Taino people (who, origionally were peaceful and amicable to him, even learning his language to better communicate for trade) of their goods, their people for slavery, and their knowledge of the surrounding land, he slaughtered them in various methods for reasons of just simply getting them out of the way. He intentionally used Small Pox as a means of destroying these people and their culture.

In short, Christopher Columbus STUMBLED upon South America by accident and then used and murdered whoever was in his way for personal financial gain and repor with the King and Queen.

Remind me again why we celebrate this holiday?

I'm leaving for Burning Man today and therefore will be unreachable till Tuesday. Not by compu, phone, or telegram :) I'll be in the middle of the Nevada desert for a week, but don't worry! I have SPF 48 and a bottle of Gentlemen Jack ;)

I love you all, see you when I get back! (tell you all about it)

General / FA Get-Together 2010
« on: August 17, 2009, 03:01:23 am »
I would like to offer up my house as a place for the FA Get-Together of Summer 2010.

I have one spare bedroom that can be split between minimum of two people, max four. I have a gerat internet situation, wireless is hella fast now plus direct connect.  I can't put up as many people, but there a plenty of cheapish motels, hotels, and great hostels a few blocks from me, and I am willing to play Taxi to those who need it.

Also I am two block from Venice Beach. Full of crazy artists and half naked rollerskater chicks, as well as the greatest waves for swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, and near-drowning (I can supply all necessary implement for this)

For those who came this year, you know what a great bonding experience it was.... we'd never met and yet within the hour it was like we were family.

Lets make it happen again as soon as possible, and I offer my home as a homebase for us for 2010.

Thoughts?

Any chance someone who is coming (or lives around the area) could pick me up at the airport?

I get in to BWI at 11:15pm.

Tbone said he might be able to, but we're not sure of his schedule.

I'm buying dinner if someone can come rescue me :)

Off Topic / Onstage Finally!
« on: February 14, 2009, 09:34:21 pm »
I was the assitant director for a show at the Oddyssey Theatre Ensemble, that opened awhile back. The show is an Allan Ayckbourn play, "Taking Steps" and has been named by L.A. Times pick of the season.

The actress playing Kitty had to drop out for some reason, and they've asked me to step in! It's only for one weekend, but hey it's my first stage time in LA and I feel the necessity to celebrate :)

PS... I'll be in pick up rehearsals much of this coming week (I hope).
