FA Artwork / Ad Astra Propaganda

I plan on making more of these.  I like the style of a lot of the old-school propaganda posters, and photoshopping them is turning out to be a lot of fun.

I'll be heading down to Venice, California this Thursday to visit Lits over the weekend.

We really need to organize another proper meetup.  Maybe to celebrate the launch of TOR?

Non-VR Games / 17 hours with TOR

An extensive, though not exactly positive article over at PC Gamer:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/13/17-hours-with-star-wars-the-old-republic/

This part worried the hell out of me:

Quote
The only problem with companions is that you can only have four people in a group, and they count. So when Andy, Josh and I did manage to team up, both of them had to give up their companions to do so. For Josh, it wasn’t worth it, and he ended up leaving our group and fighting alongside us separately. It’s a bizarre restriction.

"Bizarre restriction" is putting it lightly.  This effectively discourages group play.  If your companion proves valuable, you may have to sacrifice playing with real people if you want to keep your NPC counterpart in a fight.  At best you're limited to just four people in a group.  At worst, it's two real people and two companions in a group.

I've been waiting for this game to release in the US for a few months now, and it has finally hit the US app store.  It's a pretty interesting take on mobile MMOs.  It's still in active development, but from what I've seen so far it's pretty solid.

You're put in the role of a mage, and your city is the battleground against other players.  Using the phone's GPS, you travel around your city searching for "Energy Gateways", which act as hotspots for game activity.  I've already found two that are near my house.

You swipe runes on the touchscreen to enact various spells.  Attack, heal, etc.  "Spirits" are essentially NPCs that you have to defeat for XP and Energy points.

Campaigns open up where you and members of your chosen faction have to battle against players in the opposing faction.  You fight NPCs and eachother to build enough energy to "claim" your city.

Players can set up teleportation points around the city, so if one of your friends needs help, you can warp to them in the game instead of having to physically travel to them.

The game is free, but you can get a bit more of an edge by buying mana potions.  Otherwise you have to wait for your mana to refill every 10 minutes or so.

If you have an iPhone, I highly recommend this game.

Off Topic / TS Drinking Night!
« on: April 25, 2011, 11:12:47 am »
When was the last time we had a good ol' fashioned FA drinking night?  Where TS was full, everyone was drunk, and nobody cared if they had to be at work the next morning.  I can't remember either.

Let's fix that.  Saturday, April 30th. 8pm FA time and we'll go until whenever.  I'd even be willing to start early so our European friends can join in.  I've already submitted the event to the calendar which makes it official, so you all better show up.

And even if you don't come, I don't mind drinking by myself.  Just know that it would be a lot more fun if you were there.  Tbone, Yotogi and Lits all know first-hand that my scrawny ass can't hold its liquor to save its life, so even if you don't drink, at least come for the show.

Battlefield, Portal 2, LoL, Minecraft, Mortal Kombat, CS:Source, and anything else.  Let's have some fun.

I'm watching "All Good Things" to celebrate.

EDIT: The event description in the calendar is incorrect.  MxO is six years old today, not eleven.

Played the demo last night and holy fuck I feel like a kid again.  I haven't had this much fun with an MK game since Mortal Kombat Trilogy back in '96.

Anyone else planning on picking this up when it launches in April?

General / TOR investor worries
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:11:47 am »
For anyone interested, this article touches on what we discussed in last night's meeting.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/32605/Analyst_Wary_EA_Investors_Betting_Against_SWTOR.php

I remember watching the build up to Warhammer Online and seeing it fall fast.  And APB holds the record for quickest MMO death.

I'm hopeful for TOR, though.  I've never played a Bioware game, but I've been hard pressed to find anyone who can say anything bad about them.  I can't honestly say TOR looks like anything revolutionary to MMO's, but "if it's not broke, don't fix it."
