Title: New Website Feedback
Post by: Tbone on August 04, 2013, 02:36:02 pm
Hey guys,

Welcome to the new site! Just to put this in perspective, we haven't had a new website since 2004! Yikes!

Anyway, we're still setting up proper links and adding content, so be aware that some things won't work or will look incomplete.

That said, please give us your feedback! Help us squash bugs! Any features missing that you want for the new site? Anything look stupid? Let us know!

Nice. Well done all who worked on this and agonised over fonts etc.

Need to reinstall and configure the EVE API mod. It's essential for corp security.

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3410664#post3410664

And can the "Recent Posts" block be split into "Recent News" and "Recent Forum Posts"? Seems a little bloated to having all lumped together.

Can there be some sort of quick reply ability added? Nevermind found it.

Also, Masters can currently see the Archives forum. Is that intentional? We were not able to see it before.

-Split news and posts
-Removed access to "Archive"

-------

I'll have to talk to Lith about the EVE API and the best way to implement it. I'm also not sure if there's a way to have the quick reply expanded by default.

You have to go into your profile and set it to do (Look and Layout section, second from the bottom). I don't know if there's a way to change that in some master forum default, however.

Would also like the EVE forums set up as they exist on the dev environment, to keep things organized.  :)

When you click reply, type a reply and hit submit, can it please redirect back to the thread instead of booting you back to the forums?

That's another option you have to specifically set in your Profile in the same place I mentioned earlier.

Profile-->Account Settings-->Modify Profile-->Look and Layout-->"Return to topics after posting by default"

Isn't there a way to create forms within SMF?  Rather than asking people to send an email to Tbone with their information, the form gets posted to a private board.  The admins/mods who have access to that board can then review the submissions and process them.

Something like this:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1279 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1279)

Yeah, there are custom mods for it. Lithium just ran out of time today.

Can't embed youtube videos for some reason?  The iframe html just gets output as plain text.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/iACAS_RAneE?list=UUbu2SsF-Or3Rsn3NxqODImw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Yeah, I fixed your earlier post. Right now the work around is to use the flash tag and change "embed" to "v" in the link. SMF is a bit more locked down with this stuff, but I already asked Lithium about it, so he should take a look tonight.

There's a simplemachines forum tweak that will autoembed nearly all video sites, you just paste the link to the video.  We used it on our other forums.  We just switched to Vanillla forums though so I can't tell you which it was.  Let me google though.

Regardless, there is one.  It works on everything youtube, live leak, vimeo, all sorts of sites.

So. We know that my tech knowledge is on a par with Broin's. But - in perusing the old website on my iPad I noticed that photo's (especially those weird ones with people nodding etc that Ana likes to post) kind of scaled to fit on my screen - now - when I look at the forum - if someone posts a photo the photo is huge!!! And I only see half of it. Is it me, or, erm, something else?

Could we add tapatalk support for mobile use? :D

Noticed this as well.  The whole site in general doesn't really scale well on mobile.  Things like images, embeded videos, and signatures don't seem to scale with the width of their respective div containers.

I know what needs to be done to fix it, but I no longer have access to edit the theme.

Could we add tapatalk support for mobile use? :D

That would work also.  :)

Aeva is a bit better and doesn't have a copyright. I'm using the lite-version. We might upgrade to the full version to support file uploads but I had some issues with it on the dev server.

Images are constrained to 800px max so they don't break the layout. They should be in an 'iframe' type window so you should be able to scroll them left to right. We can disable it at any time but for the sake of saving the layout I personally like the feature.

P.S. Avatars are auto-resized to 100x100 if oversized as well.

I have installed Tapatalk support. You can search for 'The Furious Angels'. Very cool app!

Let me know if you have any issues with it.

There's a CSS trick that can take this a step further.  Images will automatically scale in accordance with the screen size, but not go above the 800px imposed maximum.  It can be applied to embeded video as well, I believe.

One other suggestion, could we get the FA logo as the favicon?  This will make it easier to spot in tabs and bookmarks.

Maybe just do a url shortener like this:

http://goo.gl/oI23Sr (http://goo.gl/oI23Sr)

Or HTTPS  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up863eQKGUI&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up863eQKGUI&feature=youtu.be)

Yep.

The "Moon Mining" video should preferably just be a link, to keep the list readable.  Likwidtek's suggestions would work, but I feel like it adds an extra step.

Use [noembed][/noembed] BBCode to prevent a link from being converted.

The menubar div is overlapping half of the breadcrumb div, causing only the bottom 3-4 pixels of the breadcrumb links to actually be clickable.

#header {
 position: relative;
 height: 130px;  // from 171px
}

and

#menubar {
 // height: 45px; //remove this
 // margin-top: -60px; // remove this
}

That fixes it for me.

FYI, if you don't see the fix for the breadcrumb bar yet try doing a 'shift-refresh' to clear your file cache.

I need to try to figure out Teamspeak permissions so that non-members have a little bit of room to move around. TS admin still looks like a foreign language to me, though.

Is anybody else experiencing a bug where the site will hang on a blank white screen after submitting any kind of form?  Such as posting a new topic, replying to or editing an existing one, etc.

I've created sub-forums and usergroups. I'm still waiting on a form application for new FA members, so that is priority.

Custom Forms :
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1279 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1279)

Example of another guild using it as their Application on SMF 2.0.4 :

So what's the status on the FA application then?

We can't open up EVE recruitment without the safety net of the API mod.  I mean, we could, but it would not be smart.  Without a way to keep tabs on members' in-game activity, it opens the corp up for some major headaches.  And without recruitment we will continue to struggle to get things done efficiently.

If we can't recruit more people to do fun things with, then the corp will stagnate and people will move on.

The mod takes maybe ten minutes to install and configure.  I'm having trouble understanding why it's turned into a months-long process.

Thanks Revalis! I think I installed and set it up correctly. If you go to "Apply" under "Furious Angels" at the top, you should be able to test it out. The Applications forum can only be seen by Staff currently, but anyone should be able to submit an application. Please let me know if anyone thinks I should add some fields to the form.

Edit: Got the EVE API mod up and working. It took some hacking to keep it from taking over half of the registration page, but it can add people to the EVE Corp and EVE Staff groups and fetch information. The only issue is the cron job that's supposed run on the server. I don't know that we have enough control to put command lines into the server, so we'll probably need a different solution.
