Title: Nominations for Our Replacement Game!
Post by: Tbone on June 14, 2009, 06:02:22 pm
If you haven't done so, check out my announcement titled "A New Direction...". The short of it is that we are replacing Darkfall with a game that hopefully more of our members will be interested in. MMOs are preferred, obviously. Something with a trial would be nice so we can test it out. The game needs to already be out or coming out within a month and be able to keep us entertained and active for potentially a year. I know you're all itching to volley for your favorite game, so let's hear them!

I do like the suggestion from Sharpak for Motal online. The game seems really be interesting, and seem to offer alot (customized weapons and armor, ect).

I'm very very skeptical of Mortal Online. It sounds just like Darkfall. I imagine a lot of people sitting around afk macroing their one handed sword. I also don't like the multiple-characters thing and characters sharing a Deva. This almost seems to promote having a griefing character, spies, etc. The combat also looks exactly the same as Darkfall, if not less interesting. Mortal Online doesn't seem to even have magic. The combat videos just looked like people awkwardly and slowly walking around trying to slash at each other. It just doesn't seem very dynamic. I would also very like to move away from the fantasy, medieval era. I've never liked it. Almost humorously, the only PvE in the video was a guy fighting a rat in a sewer...sigh...

The game has good graphics, but Darkfall also had some pretty landscapes and that was only exciting for so long. Anyway, those are just my opinions. I just don't think there is going to be much a difference between GrindFall and Grind Online.

EDIT: T beat me to it :P

I say we should hold off on Mortal online. Sure, they are showing all this nice stuff but

1) DFO Promised tons of stuff like no Grind... Unfortunately, the Grind is VERY well in place and there is no Lore. MO seems great but i say we just give it a bit before we throw all our energy into this.

2) All the dicks that made Agon this unpleasant place to be will SURELY be moving to MO.

MO just has the same Premise as DF... As to whether they will pull it off successfully is something that is too early to tell.

We need to move to something that at the moment is out or will be out very soon that will REALLY keep us in it. I say we try moving to something that already has had time to gain stability, fixes, and polishes to try and get us all to game together before we jump the gun on another game.

i would say something with a more modern feel to it rather than Medievil... but unfortunately i've grown to Hate most MMO's so i'll jump on to whatever FA does as long as we can have fun :P

Well we could look at such games as SWG as an option. They have had alot of time to work out alot of the bugs. i know we have alot of our old members who left and went on to play this for some time. I also think that if we are thinking of moving into Knights of the Old Republic that this would be a good start into that type of realm.

i'm just tossing ideas out there...

I think we should focus on an upcoming game, such as, starwars. Build a community, a lore, a persona, early and do what we did with MxO; talk about the game and play America's Army and other little games to kill time. It worked well. And I think it's a better idea than jumping into an existing game and playing catch up on everything.

First and foremost, I must say that I have done next to no research on this game, but I have been seeing ads pop up increasingly in game magazines for a futuristic MMO called "Fallen Earth".  It's currently in closed beta; estimated Q3 2009 release.

Description:
Fallen Earth is a massively multiplayer online game mixing first-person shooter style action with traditional role-playing game design. Set near the Grand Canyon in 2156 after a deadly plague wiped out most of humanity, the game features six factions, a classless advancement system and a unique crafting feature in which players can make 95 percent of game items. With approximately 70 towns, real-time settings and interesting character modifications-woven together in a post-Apocalyptic plot-Fallen Earth provides the ultimate player versus player and player versus environment experiences.

BF 2... here's the reasoning... while not an MMO or an RPG it does involve advanced tactics, extremely violent game play and the option for competition. The game is polished and could definitely hold us over until the next great MMO comes out. It also offers a lot of room for organization.
Of course this is the bias opinion of an ex Bf2 maniac.
Most MMOs these days are pretty lame and would require grinding or some form of menial/terrible pain before we could get to the stages where we need to be competitive, all that aside, until these other more "open" games come out I propose we either move onto another style of game (for the time being) or just play DFO.

If we're going to vouch for FPSes, I'm going to suggest BF2142 (similar to BF2, only this one's more vehicular based =D ), or TF2.  TF2 is bar none the most fun you'll have in an FPS.

Yeah, I'm always down for Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Battlefield 2142, Crysis Wars, DOD:S and the like.

I understand that it would be nice to check an MMO type of game and that's fine too.

As long as our focus and energy goes towards the New MMO we're working toward and not too much on what's holding us over, it's fine by me.

Don't think it was supposed to be realistic, but futuristic ^_^

Either way, it requires a good amount of Comms to get things done and that's what i'm looking for when gaming with us all ;)

Hmm, current MMOs...  one possibility that nobody has mentioned so far is UO on one of those free shards that replicate the game when it was actually good.  One in particular, UO Second Age averages around 500 people each day and 600-700 on weekends.  While that's very little compared to most games, that's a very good number for a free player-run shard.

DDO is soon becoming free to play with a micro-transaction system where you pay for each Module.  It has basically zero PvP though, and that's what made me grow bored of it a while back.

I really can't think of any others that I would like to play, which is kinda a bummer.  A whole year (at least) of no MMO does not make me happy; I hope we settle on something to tide us over...

As for other genres of games, I'm definitely a realistic FPS fan (meaning I hate all those sci-fi games where you can take multiple rockets to the chest and keep on truckin').  The one I think we'd have the most fun in is BF2 or America's Army (though I've never actually played AA).  Essentially, anything that rewards careful planning and close teamwork seems to be right up our alley.

Non-MMO Suggestion: Team Fortress 2/Counter-Strike: Source

Pros: Instant-on action, boom headshot
Cons: Not very in depth (point and shoot)-repetitive.

MMO Suggestion: EVE Online

Pros: Very in depth game, you can level while logged out, 14 and 21 day free trials
Cons: So much customization is a bit overwhelming for first couple weeks.

One last note about EVE, because it's skill grind is based on progressive timers, you could play TF2 for hours, even days without having to log back into EVE to update your training queue.

FPS - Those games we can always play at random times. It's not really the type of "everyone let's log in to accomplish a big task" sort of thing that I'm looking for, though. We'll only see you guys when you feel like blowing shit up. I'd like to get into something at least a little more in depth than that.

EVE Online - Aren't we trying to get away from a hard grind? And what's the point of playing a game that rewards you for not playing the game?? That makes no sense to me at all. Sounds like it's just found a way to be even more lazy than the afk macros.

UO - Isn't that an old old game?

I played SWG a bit tonight. Graphics are definitely dated (circa 2004 I believe), but so far I've been having fun. I've already run into some group missions. Not to mention it's free until August for MxOers. Why are there no solid MMOs out there??

Yeah, UO is super old (released in 97).  As long as you don't care about graphics, I find it quite nice.  It may be nostalgia talking, but I think it is the greatest MMO ever made.  Why do you think so many PvP-niche games are always trying to base their major features off those in UO?
Of course, I wouldn't suggest it as a permanent move; more as a diversion until 2010 when the next wave of MMOs release.

I actually wouldn't be too opposed to EVE Online, though I'd want to try it out first (obviously).  I hate grinding, but for me customization can erase nearly all other mistakes.  As long as I have the ability to customize to my heart's content and PvP (and loot, of course), I'm a happy camper.

It seems to me like we'll just have to settle with something we can all at least tolerate for a while.  I know that uncharacteristically pessimistic of me, but I can't for the life of me find a current MMO that would truly be solid and enjoyable for all of us to play.  But what do I know?  Maybe one of you will suggest something, we'll try it, and all fall in love with it.  Stranger things have happened!

EVE Online is not about skillgrind. They put the skills offline so you can concentrate on tactics, fun, clan warfare, exploration and actually playing a game. Might be worth trying it as you can get a month free trial, then see what you think.

I played a bit of Runes of Magic this week, but it turned out to be a free WoW clone. Cute and fun, but not worth bothering with.

Jumpgate Evolution is looking cool, not sure when it's out.

I hear they are adding clans into Free Realms now. I will find out more, but if you want to try something different, hey, it's free.

I will be playing Mortal Online at the end of this month, but the launch of that is a long way off.

I plyed LOTRO for a while and that was a very fun game to play, though I never got to the clan stage. I would resub if people wanted to play that. It's a WoW clone, though.

The gaming world is slightly dire at the moment. Seriously though, if you want to play a solid game that isn't a beta test so doesn't involve risk of wasted time, EVE Online will be that for you.

I liked EVE and would have LOVED EVE if I had a faction behind me.
Problem is we would always be a no-name faction because we're too late into the world.

I've made my vote known in the thread that Bellthazor made note of earlier. I also saw Tbone's thoughts.

I won't say MO will be different than darkfall in the grind as honestly I can't say for sure until I play. I do believe that the mechanics in place will likely prevent griefing to a large point though. Stat debuff for murderers along with a harsh flagging system should help. (20 hours of being red should a player be flagged murderer.) The ability to creat multiple characters per server/account probably wont increase PKs much either, really. The fact is, even if people play PKs, once they've died, they can either resurrect and take a 10% stat debuff, or hope a red friend resurrects them. Either way, it spells WEAK reds to slaughter. I think they're actually making being a griefer playing "hardmode" rather than the other way around like darkfall.

Anyway, I just hope it is given the look that it deserves. Dig into the "answered questions" threads under their forums for some detailed information. The developers are also EXTREMELY talkative and up-front about features that are uncertain. The community even seems way more accepting and friendly thus far. I am sure that will change to some point as it grows near released, but I'm extremely impressed with it at this time.

I'll be playing at the end of this month with Demi to see what we can make of it. If nothing else, we'll let you guys know how it goes and maybe make a name for ourselves during beta. :)

Hello again guys!
Im very new to the guild so allow me to make some 2 or 3 suggestions:)
Im a fantasy fan so here it goes:

-Vanguard - the game is a lot bettr now (believe me). the pop is growing and has a huge massive world, castles, lore ,great crafting and graphics, the most sandbox pve game at the moment and you can go to high level easily in a month or two. It has a ffa pvp server wich was fun in the beginning but almost dead now. (has a trial now)

-LoTr online - great produced game with the best lore in MMOs and has some kind of pvp too

-SWG, never tried it, but heard it is very nice (best before CU), if you guys go there ,count me in

-EQ - if you on old school, a new server is openig this week or the next . Could be fun everyone the same level playing this classic massive game

Actually EVE is the polar opposite of a hard grind because you don't have to sit there 24-7 killing things to level up. Instead you can sit there 24-7 doing whatever you're interested in, of which there are thousands of things to do.

Fuse brings up the only real negative in that we would always be playing catch up, as well it is a very harsh game for solo players.

I had a primary raid warrior "back in the day" on this, but think I only got up to Planes of Power. Considering the updates I'd probably be better off with cardboard armor and a stick now.

EVE Online: It's unique. What can I say more? :)
Though it has some disadvantages: to become good you need time, as in-game skills will progress only with time. I've seen message about of near half year of training to get all basic skills (that is helpful for flying all ships) and small ships of chosen type for PvP engagements. Can't say anything about trading or production, as I know this only from words of other players, haven't tried it professionally by myself. Boring territory wars: usual things is when 100+ people were waiting for a fight for 4-5+ hours without success.

UO: Good ol' days!
I'd prefer to play not on OSI or OSI style shards. My choice is one of Zuluhotel shards, if they are still exist (need to check it). I still remember playing on one of these: very different from other shards: well-made and interesting.

Mortal Online:
Looks good, as all MMORPGs that is not finished yet :) I'll try to get in beta to check its potential.

Personally I'll try Darkfall more, I have 40+ days of subscription left (was not wise to buy such big period of game time :)). Let's look, maybe Aventurine will made some VERY good changes to it.
And I haven't left EVE :)

Actually one game I've known about for awhile now but haven't heard anyone here mention is Aion.  It's currently in beta, but from what a friend of mine tells me the PvP in that game is mad intense, and is very similar to MxO's style of fighting.  Granted it is fantasy based and all, but 1. you can fly and 2. you can stab people midflight with their own weapons as finishers...gonna look into it more and see what's up.

Disagree. There are competitive ladders/tournaments for these kind of games, they can get pretty serious if you have a committed bunch of guys.

Then there are tons of clans very active in those sorts of games who could be potentially challenged. But the again I guess we are more looking for a RP experience.

SWG got hit with a big Nerf stick when the classes were shrunk. Back in the day, I leveled my Jedi the hard way. Which at the time was leveling random skills to find the correct path to unlock the ability to become a Jedi.

Then they went and made it a class from Lv. 1 I grinded to 90 and retired as a Hologram Jedi. (I loved SWG)

I would be up for playing again if we get a decent base into it. It had a lot of the tools we could use and it's such a rich environment to lose yourself in. I'm gonna predict SWGTOR will be our next (Real MxO) type of game experience. So, I think the SWG would be a smart move getting everyone used to the feel and presence Star Wars is about. (Granted, who really needs a feel for the force! :P)

WAR - I tried WAR for a couple months at launch with some guys I work with.  The gameplay seemed very similar to WoW, with some minor improvements like RvR.  It is essentially grinding for gear to help you grind for better gear.  I tried their 14 day trial for return customers a couple weeks ago and the servers are dead.

EVE - I'm willing to start a new pilot in EVE if people are interested.  I'm anticipating solo'ing this for at least another year.  I like it well enough, but there are times when I miss playing with a group, and I don't want to play with anyone but us.

SWG - I wouldn't mind giving this a try, but I'd rather it not be our focus game.  I get angry just thinking about giving more of my money to SOE.  I know I've been pretty gung-ho about The Agency, but if I'm honest with myself, I have no reason to believe that they won't fuck that one up as well.  If we're going the Star Wars route, which I'm all for, then I think we might as well wait for The Old Republic.

I tried Free Realms and couldn't stand it.  I don't know what 3 million people see in that shit.  Talk about a glorified chat room.

so darkfall is closing for us angels as i can see... i was one of the few that voted for staying, but i can see the major bad points at least at this time of the game. and i guess getting back later when things might have gotten better is not a good point either.

but i got to the wrong topic... a friend of mine and my brother started playing Aion, the tower of eternerty.
that game is not launched yet on international servers. but you can play with a english patch on the asian servers, and so far as  i have heard quite a few ppl are doing it. the game might have some intresting aspects.
i asked my brother to bring me the client this weekend (and maybe i will have some spare hours this sunday) so i think i will try that one out and give you my opinion in this.

for eve online: i played it and a have a inactive account atm... so if you guys realy wanna start in there, i can join in. i play(ed) there as part of the RAZOR alliance in the german speaking CORP DECADENCE. . for all those who know the 0.0 in eve.

The more I read about EVE, the more I want to play it.  Seriously, how did I pass this game up when it came out?  Maybe I was just dumb those years ago...

I think it'd be really cool if everyone interested in trying out EVE all did the two-week trial at the same time, that way we'd have the same playtime window to test it out as a group, rather than all testing the game out individually.  Anyone else want to do that?

Aion, despite being a fantasy game, looks amazing and well polished. The problem is I'm not sure when they are releasing the English version, as they JUST had their first closed Beta event, and subsequent events are going to be weekend-only for what seems like quite a while. Still, though, I was surprisingly impressed by a few of the trailers and the review.

I'm doing the trial too. I have the first 3 games in my closet. I think there is one expansion that I don't have which is the Obi trials.

Gonna give this a go from Lv. 1 and see how it holds up to what i remember from a few years ago.

Can you transfer characters in SWG?  I have one on Radiant(?) from some time ago.

EDIT:  Ouch! Transfers are fucking expensive!  $30 w/o items, $50 w/ items.  However, they are running free character transfers from certain servers to certain servers, as listed below, until June 30th:

The current "transferred from" galaxy servers include:

    * Corbantis
    * Europe-Infinity
    * Intrepid
    * Kauri
    * Kettemoor
    * Lowca
    * Naritus
    * Scylla
    * Tarquinas
    * Tempest
    * Valcyn
    * Wanderhome

 The valid destination galaxy servers include:

    * Ahazi
    * Bloodfin
    * Bria
    * Chilastra
    * Eclipse
    * Europe-Chimaera
    * Europe-FarStar
    * Flurry
    * Gorath
    * Radiant
    * Shadowfire
    * Starsider

I'll download SWG tomorrow night.  I just got back from four hours of my girlfriend dragging me around the mall.  Going to climb in bed and get started on Moby Dick.

T: Sent you an invite for EVE. [Edit Whoops didn't see page 4 of this discussion for some reason, ignore that!]

Though I played EVE quite solidly for around 6-7 months last year, since I resubbed I have forgotten how to do anything, so I'm practically a noob. Or a 'Rookie' as EVE players like to call it. See how polite this community is? :P

My current ingame char is a Gallente (Jin Mei) called Demiabeille who is hanging about in the Metropolis region around Eram I believe, but I'll create an alt to play the trial with you lot. Anyone with more solid EVE explerience want to recommend a meeting point to start, and possibly a race/tribe that will fall in line with FA lore?

p.s. Have also been checking out Aion and it does look rather swish. Will be looking out for it if it ever gets released here.

I'm also Gallente.

Created a new char: FAFuse
Older female char I wish I hadn't lvled so much: Raliena
Miner: FusedIndustries
Char on second account I just reactivated to pull over some items and ISK: Fuse2

I'm doing the trial too. I have the first 3 games in my closet. I think there is one expansion that I don't have which is the Obi trials.

Gonna give this a go from Lv. 1 and see how it holds up to what I remember from a few years ago.

Have we got at least a meeting place yet or anything?

Bloodfin server. After the tutorial and starter missions, looks like Tatooine is where we'll eventually meet up.

I'll create a new character - I recommend going as a ranged character to begin with (i.e. trooper, smuggler, BH) then turn Jedi around level 30 ish (if you want to do so). Downloading the patch now so should be ingame in about 2.5 hrs.

Bloodfin?  Bah.  All my stuff is on Shadowfire. :(

Don't cry about it. You'd be dead on the floor no matter what server we joined! :)

You sure do talk that good bullshit, Lithium.

Feeling lucky?  Make a Shadowfire character and come fight my Rebel Alliance Ace Pilot. :D

I think anywhere in the Sinq Laison region is pretty much rookie territory.  Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves, so that would give us a little elbow room to get our bearings and get a feel for the basics.

My pilot is Gallente/Intaki, which I always felt fit best with the FA image.  The Gallente federation champions democracy and are at the forefront of science and technology.  The Intaki race are "cool and collected" and maintain mental stability even under stressful circumstances.

Installing SWG.  Nearly two hours into it and I'm only at 25%.  :(

I forgot how HUGE the SWG planets are and how easy it is to level up! I played for just over an hour and I'm level 10. Remember to run the legacy quest - it'll get you up to level 40 ish! I take it we're going Rebel?

I'm actually reinstalling EQ2 again myself while TOR comes out....also, just as a fun little thing SoE throws into their games:  you can send tells to people cross game.  Once I recall the command I'll let you all know!

Yes. Also the mission terminal quests give you good XP for the first 10 that you do that day. After that they don't give XL for another 24 hrs. I'm lvl 23 now and the legacy quests just sent me to Naboo. You guys need to catch up.

I'm going to try out EVE online soon as well since a lot of you have suggested that.

it's official that some people are trying it. Just as some are trying EVE, EQ2, and some beta games.

I suggest we dont make anything "official" for a while.

When you do get in, get a hold of me, or at least PM your name. I'm holding 100,000 ISK for you (thanks to Larnor).

I'm sorry, but why does this game look so flippin amazing. The lore is this kind of Angels vs. Demons thing. With SWG and EVE both being dated games, Aion definitely has potential if it is coming out soon. I see you can preorder, but I haven't been able to find any sort of release date. Watch this video:

If you preorder Aion at Gamestop ($5), you get this:

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/Jeyk2k69/IMG_0362-1-1.jpg)

I haven't activated it yet, but it claims to give you access to all "Aion Beta Weekend Events", an early head start to the live game, access to Aion server and character pre-selection, and exclusive in-game items (ring, hat, XP talisman), and a chance to win an Alienware notebook, ATI video cards, or subscription time towards the retail release.

The release date is currently 9/1/09 according to GameStop.com, and it will be available in two flavors:

Collector's Edition ($69.99)

Standard Edition ($49.99)

There's a weekend event going on right now, actually. The next one isn't until mid-July. They only go during the weekends and there's only 4 or so more of them.
