Ok i am in a predicament. It seems as though my building cannot handle DSL. The wirings is pretty old, so the people who have DSL get disconnected alot. They have about a solide 2 weeks a month where it actually works correctly.

My question is:Does anyone know any viable alternatives to DSL that increase transmission speed, not just page loading? I dont want to have 56k for MxO, even if it is accepted, as i dont like having minimum requirements for anything. Thanks in advance

Do you live in a city, if so try and get a cable connection.  Much faster than DSL.

Yeah, if you can get cable, definitely get it. It is a much better alternative. Assuming you can't though, I can't really think of anything else that would be worth the price...

That would be the best if you have cable tv. Contact your tv provider and ask about cable internet. So citys also have wireless internet. You can check in to that too. It is about half the speed of dsl but it will still play games fine. One of the best places to ask around about this would be An internet shop or isp there that is local.

i dont have cable, so i guess thats pretty much out of the question.

Is satellite worth it? Ive heard its not that big of a step up from 56k, but i have Direct TV and they offer it in my area. Would it be worth paying 15 bucks more a month?

Satelite is good for just downloads, it sucks on uploads it uses dial up pretty much. I have heard about some satelites that are two way. that send and recieve at the same speed. but that would be to cost a lot of mulla. go to www.dslreports.com you can find all the broadband internet in your area.

to run a cable line would be about $50 little more or less than that. That is what our cable company charged. and sometimes you can get a special and get it free. a month cable is about 45 a month. on average

yeah it can be. I think so people that have it and get that connection are opening up the pipe. A good friend of mine has it. he has talked about a lot of people doing that and getting kick off the satelite for it. in east texas his speeds are 800 kbps down and dial up speed upload. I guess it can depend on where you live at too.

My dream to have is an oc3 connect at my house just for me. It is 155meg download and upload speed full pipe. that is what our school has and in the dorms they allow us 2meg during the day and at night it is balls to the wall for bandwidth.

Cable is the best product available, hands down.  I know TWC is about to offer a 6MB down, 712KBps up package for around $65 a month.

I have cable and i love it soooo much i will never go back to 56K. I've had mince for about 2 years now and it only runs me aout 52 every month. Usually it's the first month that is the most expensive and you don't have to have cable TV to run the line because that's how i have it setup. Now i just need to get my new comp and i'm set.

My friend just switched to DSL and hates it.  He pays twice as much for a crappy service that more often than not doesn't work at all.  I have the cheapest cable connection available -- for the low, low price of thirty a month -- and my connection is three times as good as his.

I love cable.

The downside, is that cable infrastructure is extremely vulnerable.  ANYTHING, and I mean anything can alter your signal, and finding the sweet spot is tough, especially when the issue can be up the street instead of in front of your homes.  Typically, this takes several service and maitenance calls to rectify.  Also, some areas just aren't meant to have good signal, and unfortunately, you're stuck with continuous distruptions in service until you move.

But once it works, damn, cable is a fantastic product.  I get mine free per month, but I try not to take it for granted.
