Title: Oculus Rift - Virtual Reality
Post by: Tbone on January 14, 2013, 03:03:23 am

Honestly, I will sell a kidney for this once it's consumer-ready (hell, I'm tempted to shell out $300 for the dev-kit version). Virtual Reality has always been a childhood dream of mine, and from what everyone is saying at CES, this is the beginning of that future.

Don't tell me you wouldn't want to hyperjump around Megacity in first-person VR.

Don't tell me that.  Because you would be lying.  And lying is a sin.

CNET - "There's a scene in "The Matrix," where Neo first jacks into Matrix after leaving it via the red pill. The screen gets all warpy, and zooooom abruptly he's standing somewhere else. It's not much of an exaggeration to say this is what it's like putting on the Oculus Rift. The lenses, holding a distorted promise of what lies beyond, rise towards your face. At the same time the mask blocks out visual reality, the virtual one comes into focus...

I guess what it comes down to is this: the Oculus Rift is the virtual reality we've been promised since the dawn of video gaming, and really, the early days of science fiction. It leaps past all other attempts at the technology and moves into the realm of total immersion. The feeling is so natural that it's effortless to suspend disbelief that you are standing in that place, in that world. And that's with the prototype's crappy LCD screen and early pre-pre-preproduction software and drivers."

What strikes me about this is will I need a swivel chair so I can look behind me?  Will I even be able to sit and turn in a reactionary way fast enough?  So many cool ideas will stem from this.

I imagine it wouldn't take much to tweak the emulator to create a first person Rift version of MxO. It took them a day to tweak Doom 3 to work with it. It doesn't have to have many working functions - just allow me to walk around Mega City in this thing and I'll be happy!

I was up til 7 in the morning looking at interviews and reading articles on this thing. My freakin VR obsession is back with a vengeance!

What's crazy is that game developers and tech reviewers aren't saying "this has some potential". They're saying "this is it - this is what we've been waiting for". They're blown away.

For those who haven't researched it, Palmar is just this kid who, like most of us were in the 90s, was obsessed with VR. He bought almost 50 different VR headsets (don't ask me how a 20 year old has that kind of money) before finally saying "this is all shit - I'm gonna make my own". He started making his own and, with the technology that's come out in the last 3-5 years, he was able to put together something pretty amazing. He is a moderator on the mtbs3d.com forums, and there the Doom 3 creator latched on to his project and started showing it at demos.

Palmer was just gonna send prototypes to enthusiasts using Kickstarter for basically no profit, but it took off. Instead of $250k for enthusiasts, he did Kickstarter and got $2.5 million from developers. So what's the big deal about this?

Low latency headtracking, stereoscopic 3d, 110 degrees field of view. When you wear it, you don't see a screen. The lenses warp the screen all the way around your FOV (while software warps the image to compensate for this). The head tracking is so precise and has such low latency that it simply feels like you are looking around in a simulation. The stereoscopic 3d gives it the perfect depth so that your eyes and brain are literally looking into the distance at objects rather than something poking out of a screen.

Now they're just refining the nuance. They want to put a higher res display in it and lower the latency even further. The one big thing they still need to add is positional tracking (which they say will be in soon). Positional tracking means that you can lean forward or backwards and it knows you're moving your head closer or further away. Right now it can do horizontal, vertical, and even roll, so positional is the last step.

After that it's just having enough support from game devs (who are already scrambling to make content for it) to launch in commercially. There are little things that need to be considered (cut scenes, game menus, huds, walk bobbing animations, etc.), so previous games will need to be tweaked work effectively. The good news is that this is all being developed for the PC, so even if the game developer gets lazy, you better believe there's gonna be mods and hacks for every game imaginable if this thing takes off like it should.

Anyway, I gotta get ready for the raid...getting distracted by this again. Blah!

"No one can be told about the Occulus Rift... You have to see it for yourself."

About a third of the way through the video, the presenter tells the reporter to look up to get a sense of scale on the buildings, and the guy instinctively lifts his hand to point up at what he's looking at.

I think that's a pretty clear indicator of how this thing affects you.  He subconsciously reacted as if he were standing at the base of a real building.

Haha... "Dude, you should have a demo of you telling us this shit as like, Morpheus, or something".

If tech reviewers have this kind of reaction, you can only imagine how the general public will react when/if this thing goes mainstream.

The Verge - Best in Show, Best in Gaming, Reader's Choice

"Virtual reality has long been the ultimate promise of technology - the magic mandala, a doorway to the infinite. But the thing is: it never happened.... The Oculus Rift actually delivers on the promise, and then some. It's really, really amazing. Truly and honestly a revelation, a trip, a rabbit hole. And I'm going in. Forever. Goodbye universe. Hello universe."

IGN - Best Prototype

"Offering some of the most compelling virtual reality experiences we've ever encountered, Oculus' Rift stole the show and our hearts."

Wired - Best of CES

"If you're of a certain age, you remember the first time you sat down at a computer terminal, opened a browser, and tried the World Wide Web. It was a before and after moment. Although Usenet and other internet communications technologies had been around for years, the web was instantly recognizable as something new and powerful and different that built on all that had come before.

And so is it with the Oculus Rift."

Laptop Magazine - Best Gaming Device

"We're excited to say that Oculus Rift is delivering on the young company's lofty promises... Oculus Rift is an evolution of gaming itself, and we love where it's heading."

PCMag - Best Gaming Gear

"It's one of the most immersive visual experiences I've ever seen in a gaming or home entertainment device, and I can definitely see it making action games like Skyrim and Far Cry 3 more exciting, and horror titles like Slender more pants-wetting."

GameFront - Best of CES

"The Rift represents the future of gaming, or better yet: the future of PC interfacing. This isn't a gimmick like 3D - the Rift is going to fundamentally change the way you think about entertainment. All the VR madness from the 90's was leading to this moment, only now we have the technology to push it from laughable flash in the pan to a concrete, exciting, mainstream reality. The Oculus Rift is our favorite piece of tech from CES 2013, hands down."

Impressions

"Not only was this the coolest thing I saw at CES, but it's possibly the coolest thing I've seen ever. As someone who has always been interested in the idea of VR headsets, and always heartbreakingly let down by the reality of VR headsets, I admit I took a rare (for me) CES meeting on a lark. I had heard something about their successful Kickstarter, but honestly, I figured it would just be more of the same.
I was wrong. Not sure I've ever been more wrong. Even in this hand-built prototype stage, the Rift is amazing." - Geoffrey Morrison, CNET

"The Rift is certainly one of the most amazing things I've seen at CES this year - hell, in any year. It's not really possible to describe what it's like to use it, but as soon as I put the goggles on and turned my head, I think my mouth dropped. It's flat-out awesome." - Dan Nosowitz, Popular Science

"I haven't been this excited about a piece of hardware with the potential to change gaming since 3D hardware acceleration took off. And I believe this could even be bigger." - Don Woligroski, Tom's Hardware

"Arguably the most important thing about the Oculus Rift is that the displays take up your entire field of view. All of it. You put the headset on, and the only thing you can see is the world that it's showing you. The effect of this is immediate and dramatic, because it fools your brain into thinking that you're somewhere else. Really. It's amazing" - Evan Ackerman, DVICE

"Even using aging tech like Unreal Engine 3, this castle landscape felt real, to the point I wanted to reach out and grab a falling snowflake, or try to touch the cold, stone pillars holding up a decaying building... In the past, I simply played through worlds. I moved through them. This one made me feel like I was physically in that space. Living in it. Unable to look away, because it was all around me. It's immersion on an entirely different level." - Richard George, IGN

Looks pretty simple until you realize it's all being done with head tracking (otherwise just looks like someone's moving the mouse around). Combine it with stereoscopic 3D and you can kinda imagine the effect.

It's actually $300 to get the dev kits they are sending out. I totally thought about having a fundraiser to get one to try out "for the guild" ;)

https://www.oculusvr.com/pre-order/

If I had the money to splurge with, I'd probably pull the trigger, but consider my bank account is more likely to be in the negative by the end of the month, I decided to just try and start saving now so that I can afford the consumer version in 1-2-3 years.... :( :( :(

However I do think it's a wise investment since we are going to become an Oculus Rift guild when the consumer version comes out!!

I can see it now...

All of us sitting at our machines with these big black bricks strapped to our heads, swiveling around in our chairs talking to disembodied voices.

Maybe we have a Google video conference set up for some reason.  We can't see each other, but we know we're there.  A grid of live video images of people with these black bricks strapped to their heads, swiveling around in their chairs talking to disembodied voices.

Then someone walks in.  A spouse, a roommate, a parent.  Someone.  And they take in this scene in front of them.  They don't say anything.  What could they possibly say to make this any less weird?  So they slowly and quietly back out of the room.

I have a theory that it will be viewed by the uncoolest thing ever by anyone who has not used it and the coolest thing ever by anyone who has. The moment they try it, however, they are transformed forever! So just let your spouse try it out for a few minutes and then you'll just have to deal with her whining that she wants to use it more.

I've got some exciting news! The Oculus Rift community has created a map for those receiving a dev kit to place their area on the map if they are willing to demo it to others. Here's the map! (https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=216080568301080371629.0004d6d217a93e60f7cc6&msa=0&ll=49.439557,21.533203&spn=31.897579,86.044922&iwloc=0004d6d2279d41543084a)

Today a guy marked his area in Washington DC and put a post on the forum saying he was willing to demo the Rift in Greenbelt, MD at Club125. He's #101, so I think he'll get it this month or early next month. I've already PMed him to give him my contact info, so I should be demoing the Oculus Rift soon!!!

I also told him about the guild and that there might be others of you who want to demo it. Please let me know if you're in the area and want me to forward you to him. You can also check out the map and see if anyone lives near you!

TF2 Inside the Rift:

Now that dev kit Rifts are arriving, we're getting more videos, feedback, and content. In the video above, the guy puts a camera in a secondary Rift so that you can KINDA see what the game looks like.

Note: You aren't getting the stereoscopic 3d effect as it is in just one eye. Also, the motion blur is worse due to the camera.

The feedback is that the Rift delivers on all of its promises. It's extremely immersive and you feel like you are in the game. There are three main things that need improvement: resolution, screen door effect, and ghosting. The resolution and screen door effect are easy solutions. They switched to a 7" panel but kept the same resolution (up for a 5.6" panel). While this slightly increases FOV, it makes the gaps between pixels more noticeable. They plan on going back to a 5.6" panel (this will also make the device lighter). Resolution, of course, will depend on how good a screen they are able to get and still keep the thing affordable. Ghosting (the blur when you move) is a little trickier since that is a symptom of LCD screens. I believe OLEDs don't have this problem, but they are more expensive. Everything else (the tracking, which is the big thing), is working perfectly.

All of these issues should be fixed before the consumer version, which they're shooting for somewhere near the summer of 2014. Hopefully they will have added positional tracking by then and also come up with a unified controller (right now the Razer Hydra is at the forefront as an input device). That's plenty of time for you and me to save up the money and get one!

Okay, watched the hydra video T linked, and I was impressed by how easily he was able to pass the barrel between hands. The smoothness of the code to allow the entity to be controlled by two separate inputs in neato enough, but the ease at which the user (a first-timer, if I had to guess) passed it from hand to hand is what really blew me away.

So according to the designer, if you wear this thing while you're drinking, your brain combines the already possibly nauseating experience with the alcohol and delivers you to PUKETOWN USA, POPULATION YOUR JEANS AND RUG.

Your Brain: "Like, omg, whatever the fuck you just put in me, get it out NOW!"

No Occulus Rift drinking nights.  :P

I had a dream about this thing.  I dreamed I got one in the mail and I was sending Tbone all kinds of photos and video to gloat.  Really stupid stuff too, like photos of me and the Rift hanging out at a bar, laughing and having a good time.

But once I started using the damn thing I got seriously, legitimately addicted.  All of my time outside the Rift was spent thinking about being back in.  I started skipping work, and my family started to worry.

I finally found this again.  Basically, Carmack is the whole reason the Rift is seeing the light of day.  Here's the video that I feel started it all.

This is Carmack totally geeking out over headset displays, what has sucked about them and what needs to be done..  Very technical info too.  He's pretty much the reason why the rift is going to see the light of day.  Carmack discovered him and is propping him up.  18 minutes but worth it.  LOTS OF AWESOME GEEKY TECH INFO.

The Oculus Rift was really cool! My favorite parts were probably doing the Tuscany demo that combines Razer Hydra support and a roller coaster ride that was built through the Epic Citadel. I spend two full hours trying different demos, which is a long time in VR! I'm tired now, but hopefully I can get to a full-fledged write up of my impressions later!

CCP developing a 6v6 dogfighting game set in the EVE universe, utilizing the Rift:

A short video of the game in action:

The PC Games article makes very clear that in its current form, the game isn't much more than a tech demo that could potentially be packaged with the Rift at retail.

Oh my sweet jeebus.  Could this be the JTL replacement I've been yearning for!?

Sure, 6v6 isn't an open MMO sandbox, but OMFG.  I need to watch that teaser another 50 times now.

When they fighter came zipping around and they started zooming in on it, I said, "Oh fuck no...  OH FUCK NO...  Cockpit view!?  Is it going into cockpit view!?!", cut to black and then BOOM!  COCKPIT VIEW!  I was screaming in my office.

It looks like EVR was built in a different engine than EVE, so chances of them incorporating it into the MMO are slim to none. I could easily see it becoming a stand-alone game set in the EVE universe, though. It might also encourage CCP to get the Rift working with their own engine, but that's a pretty big undertaking.

EVR was built in Unity, while EVE's engine is custom-built by CCP.  If they can incorporate the ability to leave your ship and walk around in a station, I'm sure they could figure out a way to work in a Rift cockpit view.

However, EVE's combat is more about tactics than action.  I'm not sure how incorporating fast-paced dogfighting would work, but CCP is always pulling rabbits out of its hat.

It could be something similar to DUST, where you have two separate games that still manage to affect each other in different ways.  CCP's whole thing now is "One Universe".  They're branching out into different areas of gaming, but it will all tie into the EVE universe.

Wrong!  Morpheus said the year was "closer to 2199"!

And even that may be wrong, since the cycle of The One and the destruction/rebuild of Zion was estimated to last about one hundred years.  And since Neo was the sixth One, the year could actually be closer to 2699.

I've been reading some interviews with Nate Mitchell. Sounds like they have a prototype with a much higher resolution panel and he says it is night and day difference. Their number 1 priority is to have higher res for the commercial version. According to Nate, this fixes most of the issues with the current dev kit.

I don't know that it would work for the Rift without having the SDK and Rift camera setup.
Right now, it's a third person camera view with no focal split -- and it pulls all the input from the mouse axis. I'm fairly certain I need the SDK to be able to accept input from the controller. :/

Here's my idea for the cheap, consumer-friendly, Oculus VR package:

1. Oculus Rift
2. Oculus Wristbands
3. Oculus Omni Board (an omni balance board)

I could get behind a unified controller instead of wristbands, but wristbands give more freedom. The board could also be used while seated (my idea is basically a modified Wii Balance Board). It doesn't take up half your living room. 360 degrees of movement. Now someone smarter than me figure out how to make all that possible!

Pretty unimpressive.  I've seen a video (that I can't find at the moment) that had a Parrot AR Drone partially controlled with the rift to turn left and right.  Up and down did nothing and you had normal flight control otherwise.

And FPV is really nothing new to the UAV market.  Folks have been doing it for a long time but not with the rift.  In many ways the FPV market is pretty far along and the rift doesn't add much to it yet.  Just google up FPV and UAV or drone and you'll get a bunch of neatness.

Check out the set I'm looking to pick up as soon as possible.

http://www.fatshark.com/dominator.html

In any event, the only thing we're missing is the stereoscopic rift view.

Where the rift might shine, and I'm interested in seeing this developed, is for a multi-axis gimbal camera like this one.

http://www.uavvision.com/gimbals/cm380.html

With a set up like this, you could have a pilot who could be looking all around the airspace they're flying through.  Control would still be maintained by some separate device as I really don't see a way you can "fly" with the rift.

My check came in for $900. I'm staring at the preorder screen for the Rift. I know that, intellectually, I should start saving this money so that I don't end up broke the next time something decides to break down. But I've been obsessing about the Oculus Rift for 7 months now and I don't think I can wait another year and a half. I don't buy consoles or many games...most of my money has gone towards clothes and food and work supplies. Should I do this for myself? I mean, it's an investment. A collector's item. Or I can sell it before the commercial one is released and make a profit. Investments are smart. Maybe this is the fun AND smart choice.

You're receiving this email because your Oculus order will be advancing to "Processing" status in the next 48 hours.

Note: Once your order status has advanced to "Processing", you can no longer update your shipping information. Changing country of destination might result in your order being moved to the next shipment batch, since batches are normally allocated by distribution region.

Please take a few minutes to verify and update your shipping information via the Oculus Order Manager immediately.

Thanks again for your support!

Sincerely,

The Oculus Team

Once a new technology is adopted by the porn industry, it's basically guaranteed to thrive.

I just can't order one until they bake in positional head tracking.  I know how motion sick I get... without it, I'd be a vomit machine.  Also, I'm pretty pumped for the higher res version.

BUT DAMMIT YOU JERKS ARE TEMPTING ME.

Just put the money aside like I did and let them work out the kinks.  I'm in no hurry to get a half baked product.

Yes it's cool, yes it seems like it would be fun but I'm not in a hurry.

This.  I have the money saved and ready, but I'm done being an early-adopter.  I'd much rather sit back and let others test the waters before I dive in.  :)

I'll be waiting for the final product. The Dev kit is cool, and you can be a cool kid for having an early version if you want, but I am not going to buy a Dev kit to only buy a retail version a year later. It's just not a smart way to spend money, even if you have it in excess like I do for toys these days.

I will admit I've hovered over the buy button many times, but having just dropped some serious coin on an OriginPC system, it's a lot easier to just say no lol.

Shipping update from Oculus:

"If you've received a processing email your order will ship within a few days.
There are 1,000 kits going to Europe and Africa, and another 2,000 to U.S. and Canada.
We've encountered some region specific delays. Shipments to the Middle East have resumed. We're still working on a solution for Russian deliveries.
If your order has been in processing for longer than 2 weeks, be sure to contact support@oculusvr.com and we will look into it."

So, I'm considering buying a Rift... I have a birthday coming up in October and it's a "big one" according to my wife. I'll be 30 and she's up for buying it.

However, that said... I also realize that there is an issue of first-come, first-served with the dev kits. I'm not really worried about how long it takes to get here.

The question is: Do we know if there is a down side to buying now over the final, commercial release? Any reason to wait as far as those that are already Rifting can see?

You said delivery time isn't an issue for you.  If that's the case, I'd say wait a little longer for the commercial release. You'll be spending roughly the same amount of money for a superior product.

This.

I love that there are so many dev kits going out to eager early adopters.  What this means is that a lot of people are going to be developing and testing for my final product.

Everyone has clearly stated that the dev kits are close to the final version but are clearly NOT going to be as good as the final version.  This means that you might be buying two Rifts in the next 2 years (one dev kit now and one product version at release) because the release version will be more advanced and have more functionality (because of all the testing/development) that is going on right now.

That said, if you have the cash to burn or you feel you NEED to be on the bleeding edge of development buy one now and one later.

I for one, trust folks like Tbone to go forth, test, do cool things, figure things out and report them to us here and pass the feedback on to the Rift devs to make the product super at launch.

If you buy a dev kit, just know that you will also need/want to buy a commercial Rift. Things you will not get with the dev kit:

1. Higher Resolution (1080p)
2. Reduced "screen door" (area between pixels)
3. Positional Tracking (leaning forward, back, etc.)

This is the minimum they want to accomplish before the commercial release. I'm pretty sure 1 and 2 are already done.

The problem is that the Rift is still probably a year and a half out. Optimistic people will tell you it will be next summer. I think they'll be doing well if they get it out for the 2014 holidays.

For me it was worth $300 to be able to get a version of the Rift a year and a half early, even if it isn't what the final product will be. If I time things right, maybe I can sell it for my money back right before the commercial version is about to come out, and then I won't be out double my money, but we'll see.

Heh, I feel you Zephic, and as I remember you're pretty impulsive so I'm sure you're going to buy it anyway, but I really would wait until the 1080p + Positional tracking version comes out.

Otherwise, plan on spending $300 now and then needing to spend another 3-400 in a year or so when the final version comes out.

I *REALLY* want one now too... but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.  I naturally get motion sick too and without the positional tracking... I dunno, I think it'll just be too tough.  The screen door effect, motion blur and all that I would be a little disappointed with too and would absolutely feel like I would need to buy the better version as soon as it's launched.

Maybe you can find someone near you that'll let you play with it for an hour or two to help you make a better decision.  Or, if you have about $600 to blow, buy the dev unit now and set aside the other $300 for later and get both.  :D

You can always try to live vicariously through those of us who were silly enough to get one. ;)
I'm set up for Twitch, now, so hopefully I'll start doing some streaming sessions. May do it for gaming nights, but also want to maybe think about live streaming development so people can pitch in with work on the Construct. Haven't decided if that would be annoying or helpful yet. :P

I wear glasses too, but I'm near sighted, so I wonder how that will work out.  I think I'll be able to take them off when using it... but I'll just have to experiment.

Ugh... it's so tempting to get one now. There's a guy in the Dallas area who is trying to sell it for the price they paid to get it. I can now get one TODAY if I'd like to drive to Dallas and spend 300 bucks.

Sared... if you're waiting for one, I'd gladly pass on this and get you the info, or do you have one already?

If you're buying it second hand for the full price, I would make sure it also comes with the Unity 4 Pro code. That code alone is worth $300.

EDIT: quick google search says it's a 4 month trial, is that right?
Title: Re: Oculus Rift - Virtual Reality

It's an extended 4 month trial code for Pro

Edit: Yep. You got it. And sub price for Unity Pro is $75/mo. And you can only publish with the Oculus DLL Plugin if you have Pro.
