VR Gaming / New Steam Machine / HTPC - built for the Oculus Rift
« on: June 26, 2014, 05:33:01 pm »
With the DK2 shipping soon, I'm building a new HTPC / Steam Machine for the living room but I'm not going light on specs. It'll need to be powerful enough to run the Oculus Rift DK2 as well as all of my Steam Library natively. Any suggestions for a great case? Something that looks great in an entertainment center but will still fit a nice GPU.

Speaking of GPU, what do you think my options are for a graphics card? It'll need to fit in a small form factor case and be quiet enough to not make the living experience a bummer.

I was really expecting the Nvidia 800 series would be out by now so this is kinda of a terrible time to buy a gpu. :(  Anyway, what do you guys think?  (I won't be running SteamOS, at least not yet.  Will be running Windows with Steam Big Picture mode for now.

VR Gaming / Going to need some upgrades for the DK2
« on: March 20, 2014, 01:26:13 pm »
Pretty informative thread about the tech specs that will be needed for the DK2 and CV1:  http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/20wir9/pc_specs_requirements_for_dk2/

Crap, and here I thought I'd only need to fork over about $350.  It's been a while since I've upgraded, so yeah.  I guess it's time.

Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 launches with 960×1080 resolution, lower latency

Improved VR headset should be available in July 2014 for $350.

Quote
Many folks have had the occasion to try out the Oculus Rift development kit, a developer-only virtual reality headset that actually makes good on a lot of the VR promises from the 1990s. But the original Oculus Rift was never intended to be a mass-market thing—it's a tool for developers meant only to approximate the final product. Today, the Oculus team has announced something much closer to what will eventually ship to consumers: the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2.

The "DK2," as the Oculus folks are calling it, has a ton of improvements over the original Rift. The displays are much better, as the Rift DK2 bumps the pixel count up from 640×800 per eye to 960×1080 per eye. Oculus also says that the image persistence has been drastically reduced (the spec sheet says 2 to 3ms of persistence, which will make for a smoother display of images). The display also now comes with an external CMOS sensor to assist the DK2's on-board sensors with position tracking.

The redesigned DK2 has a few other thoughtful improvements as well, including an on-device USB port for plugging in gaming accessories. However, the improvements aren't free—weight has increased from about 380g to 440g.

The updated Rift DK2 is debuting right now at GDC in San Francisco, and we just so happen to have both Kyle Orland and new guy Sam Machkovech there. Look for a hands-on piece soon.

General / We got to hang out with Anamodiel!
« on: January 13, 2014, 03:08:21 pm »
Sweet!  Jess and I got to go see Ana here in Phoenix.  Good times and yes he's just as beautiful in real life.  I did not however, get to touch the hair.  I will make a point to rectify this upon next visit.  :D  Also, like an idiot I didn't get any pictures.  I'll try to fix that if we all get to hang out again.

We tried getting a hold of Mharz but he sucks and didn't pick up his phone.

We're going to try and get Me, Jess, Ana, Mharz, Milhouse and Waz_here together for a little get together soon.

Awesome stuff though, lots of fun last night.

Off Topic / PS4 / Xbox One thread
« on: June 13, 2013, 07:43:20 pm »
Soooo... yeah.  I've only seen a little bit of talk about all of this in the random thread.

Figured I'd dump some of my goodies/thoughts here too.

First off... a little background:

$499 for the xbox one, internet required, online DRM, can't trade, gift, borrow, games.  can only sell or buy used games with a fee.

$399 for the PS4.  No internet required.  No DRM.  Share games as you will.  Plus, you can still put whatever sized hard drive in it that you want.

I mean, we like our kinect games.  But not that much.  And we SERIOUSLY don't care about live TV or sports.  Yeah, wtf, Microsoft.

The wife will be bummed about losing the kinect, but I'll pay to have the optical drive in my 360 replaced and we'll keep it around for parties and stuff.

DRM BAD

Granted, the PS4 will have the same DRM scheme as the PS3.  Meaning games can still require some sort of DRM but no online passes will be allowed anymore.. YAY... but lesser of two evils here.  I don't see anything on the PS4 that makes it a must buy, but as soon as good games start coming out for it, we'll prolly pick one up.

This statement from Microsoft just makes me think that they're trolling at this point:

This cracked me up to no end.

Some funny/relevant images I found on reddit tonight.

I laughed so hard at this.

Off Topic / Confessions of a Gamedev Podcast
« on: October 26, 2012, 01:23:01 pm »
I've been listening to my friend's podcast and it's pretty awesome.  Basically my buddy from highschool (Trent) has been a Game Developer for a few years and is venturing out on his own to make some of his own games.  Him and his buddy Spenser started this podcast to talk about basically gamers who want to make games.

It's rough around the edges but it's really entertaining.  They mix in lots of stuff that's interesting to me.  Basically working, married adults with kids trying to still follow their dreams, and they also talk about a lot of the games they're playing recently.  They have some pretty interesting guests too.

Anyway, I'm shamelessly plugging them but if you're interested they're on iTunes and Stitcher.

Itunes:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/confessions-of-a-gamedev/id566813072?mt=2

If you use the Apple Podcast app just search for "Confessions of a gamedev"

Or if you use stitcher you can just search "Confessions of a gamedev".  There seems to only be one episode on there though.
