The entire post below is a copy/paste from the MXO forums, just in case it disappears:

Were putting a team together to create a Matrix Online Server Emulator. MXO is a perfect candidate to have a server emulator. If you are in the beta you will know. Just the whole essence of the game makes you want to launch your own matrix and let you be the architect. If you are interested, email me at thelvstore@gmail.com if you can provide help and/or would like to join the team. We will get Beta Keys for those who are on our team and dont have beta. Theres two types of servers right now, we download a second client for one of the servers. Examining both can lead us to how to connect to different severs and create our own client. This is a good headstart and when the game actually comes out we can get a whole lot closer to a retail server emulator.

We are looking for more people who have had experience in building server emulators.

Our sourceforge project listing has also been approved. https://sourceforge.net/projects/mxoemu/

-Damien

P.S. Over 6,000 emails received from people who want an emulator from this game and the game is still in beta!

Not really. It's happened to practically every major MMO in existance (most commonly UO), and it's just a way for people to be able to play the game for free because they're cheapskates...

im sure there'd be a way - maybe have something specific on the server side - that cant be looked upon or found in the software on the computer - like an authorisation msg from the specific mxo servers to the program telling it its now allowed to use specific .dll files and what not to have the game work? just an idea

there's always a way to stop pirating. of course they'll eventually find another way around it, but if it helps just for the existence of mxo.....well then there u go

I've played on an Everquest emulated server before.  Very wacky...very unstable.  I'm sure their method will be tons of packet sniffing, and other cooky reverse engineering.  Those cheapskates won't get much out of this crappy imitation.

Honestly, I have been on RO servers and stuff that do the same, and even if the emulated server is stable, it won't be as fun because there will be only like what, 20 people or so in their entire server?  Plus as some people have said before, the servers will be mad unstable and probably alot more glitchy than the actual beta / retail servers.
