Title: reinstallation blues
Post by: Anonymous on March 31, 2005, 08:01:02 pm
Ever since about a week before the end of beta, I've been having problems with crashes and lockups (I'm sure I'm not alone).  After the last patch I couldn't play more than 2 minutes without locking up.  I thought this might be because I put in a new motherboard and cpu in about a month ago but didn't reinstall windows.  After the constant crashing yesterday, I decided to go ahead and reinstall windows and start over from scratch.

Now, after reinstalling win2k, the latest updates (SP 4, etc), drivers, and mxo from the retail CD; when I run mxo it crashes when it gets to 'initializing metro world'.  Everytime.  And that is  all I have running on a fresh install.  No firewall, antivirus, or anything else installed yet.

Grrr.

Has anyone else had this problem?  What did you do about it?  Any ideas about what I should do about  it?

The only problem I'm having in game is that whenever I use a hardline to do anything or a vendor to look at my abilities my entire computer freezes up for 15 seconds, but I'm not crashing as much anymore.

I have problems with crashes every hour or so, but MxO will crash out after 5 - 10 mins.
Seems like its running ok, but them suddenly, things get laggy, then SO laggy I can't move, then crash...

I turned off auto restart for the regular crash I'm getting, and traced a 0x0A error, which is either poinitng to a bad device driver, or bad memory...

I've ordered new parts, but I think it may be related to the ATI latest drivers, not sure... I've downloaded a "good" driver for my ATI, and I'm going to try it tonight.

Unfortunately, it means I haven't been able to play, and still at level 9.

Well, I uninstalled the latest catalyst driver and installed the previous version and now I can actually get into the game.  But, now I am having the same problems I had before I reinstalled from scratch.

Hopefully I'll get a response from my petitions soon.

once piece of advice I have:
I have created a ghost disk of my system:

I use Norton Ghost (you can use DOS or WIN32 app) to create an image of my system which has the following installed: Windows, fully updated. All drivers. Codecs. Multimedia apps.

Roughly, anyway. I don't install the antivirus until after the image, because I use Norton 2003, and that doesn't need activation, so its another free year of updates, beacuse its a fresh install.

Still waiting for a response.. of course.

I still can't play.  I discovered the reason why it crashed at 'metro world' was because I hadn't yet installed WMP9 (and I wasn't planning to).

But guess what?  I'm still having the original problem of locking up within 2 minutes of jacking in. So a fresh install didn't make a difference.

I posted a thread in the MxO forums here: http://mxoboards.warnerbros.com/forums1/thread.jspa?threadID=1961&tstart=0

This really sucks!

Ket, I really should do the Ghost thing... next time I reinstall, I will.  Thanks.

zink a ghost is like one of those dell discs, you stick it in, it overwrites everything, and everythings installed once your done. 1 DVD (or 2 CD's generally), and only 15 minutes to reinstall... everything!
