Hurricane Rita is now a category 5 for those who don't know, so I would say get out if you think that thing is going to hit you.

This might not have anything to do with the topic, but I feel the need to say it anyway.

Best avatar ever.

I'm orginally from Houston, my mother still lives there and the rest of my entire family only lives at most  2 hours from there.   If Rita hits Houston it will be the 2nd major hurricane in less than 3 years.  Friends of mine just recently finished rebuilding after the last one.  And talk about gas shortage, if Houston gets hit, you can say hello to $5.00 for regular.

For those of you who may be in that area....stay safe.

good luck anyone who is down there

btw, they retired the name katrina from ever being the name of a hurricane or tropical storm again. i guess they do that to the bad ones. i hope they don't have to retire 2 within barely a month .... :S

If Rita gets landfall at even cat 4 it will be retired.

Isn't it nice to know that you can never be a hurricane again grim?

Bear with me here, I'm gonna kinda hijack this thread :D

"Global Warming = More Hurricanes."
Hurricanes love to get bigger with hot climates.
There are lots of references to temperature increases around the Gulf Coast area over the years.

Global warming can be a very sketchy subject, but most countries have signed to the Kyoto Treaty (ok there is a lot of politics involved). The States have not. One "reason" given is the backlash from the public regarding the cost of going for the Kyoto treaty - it WILL affect your country a lot if you went for it.

I'm sure this cannot be the main reason, but my question is.. do you Americans agree that the Kyoto treaty could help with Global Warming (considering America accounts for most of the emmisions contributing to global warming)... and would you be willing to sacrifice your everyday lives now by accepting the treaty, so that millions of people will not be affected so much in the future, as we have seen with Katrina?

Some one posted an atricle about a hurricane doing damage 150 years ago. I would think that after 150 years of problems, Katrina would have made a much bigger response from the government, both now with the crisis, and previously when noting hurricane activity has become more fierce since then.

Lots of good wishes to all who will be affected. I hope it dies down before it reaches land.

Ket,

I was the one who posted about the hurricane of so many years ago and I agree that there should have been a greater response to the Katrina disaster but that being said you have to understand how completely overwhelmed the government was when this happened. Being a first responder myself and having seen such devestation first hand (9/11 in DC) I know how difficult it can be to coordinate major rescue operations.  It is true that mock scenerios about major hurricane disasters have been played out over and over, but when it came to Katrina and its aftermath there was no prerequisite.   Both the Federal and state governments have hundreds of books on exact measures of response for almost every known type of disaster but like life, not everything is found in those pages.  And unfortunately FEMA simply is not a "thinking outside of the box" kind of machine and when you have a situation that calls for a response that isn't  set upon in some guidline notebook you are gonna run into a few hiccups.  It was a devestating occurance but the governmens both state and federal were just "out-paced" on this one.

Like all things related to evolution we either change or we die.  By that I mean that we either learn from the missteps of our response or we shall ever be doomed to repeat them.  Classic example is Hurricane Rita; I can guarantee you that the Governmental response to this storm will be everything that the response to Katrina was not.

**Looks down, realizes he's on a soap box and steps off**

Hehe, no all fair comments there...

I was more interested in your reaction to Kyoto treaty vs Global Warming vs Hurricanes, and your feelings on that. My talk is all acedemic, I think the Kyoto treaty is being screpped for something else.....

The response to Katrina is certainly a hot topic I think..., but yeah I agree RIta will have a bigger response, if the worst should happen.

hah, holy shit, until just now, after all this time, I never knew ket was from outside the us.

anyway, I wish well to those who might be affected by this storm. between all these hurricanes and the earthquakes, among all the other stuff or other natural disasters on their way, I wonder if it's not so much god, but mother nature or the planet trying to cleanse itself after all the shit we've done to it.

or maybe Ive just been playing FF7 too much this week. haha.
