The writer of the article is completely out of his element.  He didn't even mention the Street Fighter movie.  If that isn't quality cinema, then I don't know what is.    :p

The thing is that he is talking about how much the movie kept true to the game. That's why he gave it such a good score, because it almost perfectly replicated the game on film. It didn't try to coat it up and make it all fancy or anything. It was just how the game is; secure a research facility, gather information on what went wrong, kill a shit load of monsters, and get the fuck out. I think Resident Evil was a much better tribute to the game then Mortal Kombat was, and I think that's what he means. Also, the acting in Mortal Kombat (aside from Shang Tsung and Raiden) was just God awful horrible and chessy. I think Resident Evil was a little better in that department for sure.

It's a game.  It's a movie from a game.  It's popcorn.  Switch off and enjoy it.

I watched Mortal Kombat at least 2 times a day for at least 30 days straight in the summer when it was out on Pay Per View. :p I could honestly recite each line of the whole movie. lol Not anymore though. *sigh* I was so young back then.

Side Note: I had illegal PPV lol  :roll1:

Im not even afraid to admit it the MK theme was like my favorite song ever at the time.

What are you talking about Boom RE or MK?

naw, doom... the story is phoney, it's good enough for sci-fi though, but they don't have the money for the kind of effects they would need to get right to make it work...

so the film will be 'OKAY', but not too good.

The Mortal Kombat soundtrack is what turned me on to electronic music.  If it wasn't for MK, I'd probably still be listening to Kriss Kross and Ace of Base.

I mean... not that I ever listened to Kriss Kross or Ace of Base in the first place... I mean maybe once I... no, no, I just said that to drive home the point that... No really, I have good taste... guys come back!  I was kidding!

Ah forget it.

LMAO. Boom is right, the point is that they're saying it's just that, "okay." However, the "okay" is still the best of the unapologetic shit they've done with video game movies. It's a good action flick with lots of blood, gore, action, and badass guns. WOOT WOOT another popcorn flick.

Why is this turning into a MK discussion now? lol MK did have good music though. *drops head at Manic and walks away*

Reasons why I am pirating this movie out of principle and spite: NO HELL! Its turned DOOM into a Resident Evil ripoff.

By the way, the original Resident Evil film IS one of the best game to film adaptations out there. It created its own independant story based on elements of the games universe. In fact, it was so original that it actually FIT into the series of games well. Really, thats what I want to see more of in game to film adaptations. Original stories based on the universe, not a 1hr - 2hr shoddy rehash of the game (if anyone mentions The Spirits Within I will maim you). It also had Michelle Rodriguez being a badass running around with heavy weaponry. A plus in my book.

...not the second RE though... the second one was just a sad sad fanservice that fucked up the whole continuity. It doesn't count.

Maim me Vinz, I enjoyed TSW :)

Anyway, Doom's not a bad film.  Frankly actually yes it is, because the first hour is so fucking boring.  But the acting is okay, and the end is good - I just wished they'd: 1) used the monsters from the game - i.e. from Hell as was said before; 2) spread the monsters out a bit instead of packing them all in at the end; 3) Not tried to be RE; 4) Not filled out the script with as many "Jesus Christ", "Fuck", "Holy Shit" etc phrases as they could.

If this film had an arm wrestle with RE, RE would win and sit back with a smug grin, and this film would be sitting there whinging about how the table was wonky and its elbow slipped.

I don't deny that. The main problem with RE is that Paul WS Anderson is a bad director. Under a better director, RE could have been much much better. I haven't seen Doom yet, so I will withhold my judgements as of yet. However, I'm sure Doom has much better directing than RE did.

Yeah i got back from watching this and well i thought the whole FPS seqence was awesome, but the Rock saying "Fuck" it just sounds wierd and they like just crammed the movie with cuss words which im alright with to a extent but they crammed one in every place they could. Umm the beggining was kinda cliched with stuff in about every movie and it didnt get good till the end.

I agree RE could have been better without Anderson, much better, but it could also have been worse - so given what it had to work with it was the best of a bad bunch.  Doom however had a looooooot more potential :D

Yea, it could have been worse; anyone else heard of Uwe Boll? LMAO They just probably didn't give it enough money to do anything amazing with. Although, I do hear the FPS sequence is one of the greatest movie moments ever. I think the biggest mistake was changing the whole hell demon monsters thing, but, I guess they had to do that as it would probably be a turn off for many people

Doom had more potential? As a movie? Lets not kid ourselves here. Yes, Doom was a pioneer.... as a GAME. As a FPS. Beyond the elements of interactivity though what do you have? Mars opened a portal to hell, a lone space marine is sent to clean up the mess, and shit gets nasty. Thats your entire plot. As a game, a plot was not needed. As a movie... well, I knew they'd threw somthing together, but never for a second would I believe anyone was looking for an Oscar nomination. What I wasn't banking on was them pissing on the franchise.

The reason why game to movie conversions are generally denounced by the gamer community is because the writers arent writing for them, they are writing for a much larger demographic. Game to movie conversions are 100% profit  based. Want to make one? Heres what you do: take the story of a game, sodomize it, and bam! You get a movie thats generally hated by gamers but still makes money because people who have never played the game dont know any better. Its essentially FREE SOURCE MATERIAL. Bang it out, its done, its shipped, its shown, and cashed in. Like a gift card to EB Games it is swiped once and trashed.

Now back to Doom... I've been following the progression of this movie for quite some time, ever since first reading about the atrocities the writer was committing on this beloved series. Youd think it would be simple. What is DOOM? Well, its a lone space marine on mars battling the hordes of hell with big ass guns. So what does this hack of a writer come up with? A swat team on a space station fighting genetic mutations.... I GET IT! HE WROTE IT ON OPPOSITE DAY!

Obviosly that didn't fly, as much as he tried to defend it. So what did we get back... well we got mars... we got a "special forces" unit... ok warmer... hell? Nope, just a shitty tag line that says "Hell breaks loose". A tagline that I predicted TO THE LETTER when I first read the horrible concept this asshole was passing off as a screenplay. So all in all, the resemblance to the game is this: The creatures look like DOOM 3, It's on mars, and... theres an FPS scene. Thats it. Oh and Karl Urban looks a lot like the Marine dude. I'll give him that.

Now, the reason why I consider Resident Evil among the good conversions is as I said: original story set in the universe. Hell, I could easily see that movie being one of the games. It doesn't go and take 15-20 hours worth of game content, or the entire series, and cut it down to 1 to 2 hours of bullshit rehash put through a meatgrinder. We have Raccoon City, Umbrella, the T-Virus, a top secret research facility, zombies, and a Licker. Top it off with a computer that has the holographic resemblance of a little girl called "The Red Queen" in that research facility called "The Hive". If you have ever played a single RE (and Ive played them all) youd know that that is the PERFECT setting for the games. I want to see more of this.

Super Mario Bro's never really had a story. At least not at the time. I mean... a dinosaur stole the princess! A plumber goes to the rescue! Que vampiric mushrooms and airborn turtles, and call it a night. So the movie takes a few liberties here and there... but consider the source material. They could have made a movie that had refrences to the game in a cohesive manner (which they did) or they could have made a movie that would only watched by hippies on an acid trip... and we all know hippies don't have any money.

With regards to The Spirits Within... here's the movie summed up pretty nicely:

Resemblance to the game series/universe: It's CG... oh, and the old dude was named "Cid". I think.

I win. Thread over.
