Title: Has eBay gone mad?
Post by: Tbone on December 27, 2005, 12:50:35 pm
I try to login to my ebay account and it takes me to this page:

http://liquiware.net/tbone/ebaypage.jpg

I reported it to eBay, who replied saying "Thanks for reporting this fake email!" WTF! I didn't even report an email!

Anyway, I did get infected with some viruses yesterday. I did a couple of full sweeps, yet this still happens when I try to login to my eBay. It also seems that none of my cookies are saving b/c I keep having to input my name and pass to places like the FA website. Something's not right...

If you give me your ebay UN, PW, credit card number and address I can fix the problem for you.... no fee.

If you want the truth, Ebay doesn't do anything at all. I'm surprised you even got that response. All kinds of that stuff go on and they don't do anything about it. I've been ripped off on there before and they said they couldn't do anything about it. You won't get any help from them when it comes to that; that I can assure you.

Somewhere you've still got a virus in your machine which keeps that "fake ebay security page" cached in your temp folders somewhere.  Try resetting your websettings  and clearing all Temporary Internet files, and then try getting decent anti-virus software.

Introduction
The Internet is NOT safe. The Internet is like an old dirty prostitute with AIDS, Herpes, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis and 10 other STDs, and you're having hardcore sex with it up the ass! Please, use the right protection. Please listen to this advice.

Anti-Virus: McAfee VirusScan (http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100&cid=9901)
For $3 a month you can get a decent anti-virus. I'm paying for McAfee VirusScan. It is worth it. It updates everyday with new threats/virus/spyware protection methods. You can't get that with ripped versions of anti-viruses (like a ripped version of Norton).

Another option is Trend Micro (http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm). They provide a full anti-virus and firewall protection for a one time fee of $50. There are no monthly or yearly fees.

Firewall: ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en)
Dude, get a firewall. It's free. It's worth it. There's no other way to browse the internet. Use ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en). It updates at least once a month. Did I mention it's free? It prevents worms from entering your computer in the first place.
Note: "ZoneAlarm Pro" is the paid version. Don't get it unless you want to pay. "ZoneAlarm" is the free version.

Browser: Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/)
Firefox is safer than Internet Explorer. Tbone, I know the website that infected your computer (because you told me). If you were using Firefox, your computer would not have been infected. How do I know? Because I tested it on a school computer. :p

Yes, IE has more functionality. However, Firefox is worth it. If you're going to use IE, use it on only trusted websites.

Also, don't forget about Opera.

Opera is right up there with Firefox, and is recommended due to hackers starting to hit Firefox harder nowadays.  Also, the best part, it's FREE.  You used to have to pay for it, but now it's all gravy.

T, I had a similar issue last week, not saving passwords etc.  I ran Adaware and Spybot and it removed all the crap, including the edit that had happened to my LMHOSTS file and was redirecting me.  Most likely the same happened to you...

I use Opera and have never had any problems. One thing though, if you use opera (much easier/organized than firefox-especially if you use mouse gestures) also keep firefox loaded on your comp. Opera will not handle some java/quicktime embeds very well and may not show up. I'll use firefox only in these situations. Then I have IE for the sites (like windowsupdate) that absolutly require it.

Opera+Firefox+AdAware+SpyBotS&D+SpySweeper+BlackICE Corporate Firewall+RegistryOptimizer   =  a happy computer, and happy computer user.

Check my FTP for most these programs.

Yes Opera. I have a friend whose been a hardcore Opera user since forever. Yeah, the mouse gestures is a nifty feature. Also, it actually loads a webpage faster by creating multiple calls to the webpage at a time.

It's an amazing browser. I have it installed. The only reason I don't use it is becuase of functionality. I use a lot of website with Java embeds, so I just use Firefox.

Really Destyn? I've run a million scans on a million different spyware/virus scanners (Norton, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper, Stinger, and CWShredder) and I'm still having the problem. My desktop wallpaper will also not change. I used to not even be able to click any of the other options. Now I can click different options and try to apply, but it still just shows up a dull grey. I think it's trying to load some html on my desktop, b/c when I right click, instead of "properties" taking me to the display settings, it gives me the properties to "file://C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html"

Yep had that same issue, had to edit the registry in the end.  Have you tried BPS Spyware Remover?

Not yet. I managed to get rid of the desktop change, and my IE buttons are working again (I couldn't use certain buttons in yahoo mail and windows update). I'm not sure if my cookies are saving again or not. What reg edits did you make?

The one that removed my ability to alter my desktop - I had this stupid htm page showing up and the wallpaper button was grayed out.  I also had a process running in the backround, win...something, endemic of the same virus.  I killed and deleted that too (I use Norton 10 Corporate now, industrial strength virus bleach)

Yea, in the time that it would take to find the problem, I could have just done a full reformat. (5 hours, including the installion and download of MxO and SP2)

Its funny I would bet I have less protection then most people here, and I have had less problems as well.

I'm just sporting the CR2 sig that some have made when they open up the QA Server.  It's mainly just for the mxo forums, but I like the design and thought I'd use it here for a bit.  No worries mate, I'm still Zion.

Ahhhh riiiiight, I did wonder what CR2 meant ;)

What does CR2.0 stand for. Combat Revision 2.0, so doesn't that make this Combat 3.0, since Revision means that they already "revised" it once before. Shouldn't it be C2.0 or CR or CU (Combat Upgrade)?
Title: Tbone, try this

Tbone, one thing that came to mind that you might want to try:

Code: [Select]
127.0.0.1       localhost
Any other line that doesn't start with the # character should be deleted. Post those lines here so we can take a look at them.
4. Save the file.[/list]

That's how the virus was able to change the ebay page to his page. Everyone should try the steps above to make sure they're not being hacked.

Seriously guys, they did a lot of work on this crap.  I have a link to the login for my online bank - and it's one of the ones that gets spoofed LEAST - and they managed to redirect to a page where I very nearly gave out my login details and my telephone banking password.  Check yourselves out!!

localhost was the only one listed. I think I've gotten rid of the virus.
