Title: King Arthur
Post by: Anonymous on May 26, 2004, 06:11:15 pm
Yep, another movie thread. As some of you may know, there's a film coming out this summer called King Arthur and supposedly it's the "true myth" surrounding the age old tale of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Merlin, Avalon, etc etc. I'm a big fan of Arthurian legend (especially Marion Zimmer Bradley's novels - most famously The Mists of Avalon) and I was wondering what everyone else thought about the movie and/or the legend itself.

http://www.themoviebox.net/movies/2004/IJKLM/King-Arthur/trailer-page.html Here's the link for the trailer and some tv spots if anyone hasn't seen the advertisements for the movie yet.

Im also a big fan of Marrion zImmer Bradleys version of the myth. Myst of Avolon is one of my favorite books, although its unruly length prevents me from fully immersing myself in the incredibly dynamic world he portrays. Yes, I am using smart words.

I truly hope the movie lives up to its roots. It has to be 3+ hours long to truly be faithful to the story at all, which even in the age of LotR is still a big turn off to the casual movie goer. I saw the advertisement during Van Helsing, and it was the highlight of the movie, along with the Chronicles of Riddick previews.

That's very true. I myself am not turned off by movies over three hours, but most of the people I know (unless they were hardcore-Arthur fans) wouldn't want to sit through it.

It looks good, I'll proabably end up seeing it cos it looks like it will be a good movie. Plus Guenevere's a fox and shes gonna be fighting :). Chronicles of Riddick shud turn out really good too.

I know! A warrior Guinevere is something new. That actress is also in Pirates of the Carribean...One of my favorite movies.

I'm tempted to see the Chronicles of Riddick - partly because the special effects look quite entertaining and partly because...well, it's Vin Diesel...And I'm not beyond seeing a movie based solely on biceps and six-packs.

A warrior Guenevere!  Awesome!  As long as they do it well (hold the Xena please), this looks quite good.

Haha...Xena, feminism gone wrong.

The movie looks pretty good. Although, for some reason, I'm not so sure they chose the right guy to play Arthur. Clive Owen of the BMW short films and The Bourne Identity was cast as Arthur. I could be, and most likely will be horribly wrong and he'll end up being really good as Arthur, it's just going to be hard making a transition from a sniping stunt driver to sword-clad king of kings.

Well you can't go wrong with Keira Knightley as Queen Guenivere.  Damn shes fine...  Also I cant wait for Chronicles of Riddik, looks amazing, has anyone seen Pitch Black.  That is the film  he is originally in.  Very cool acting role there for Vin Diesel.

I saw Pitch Black in theaters. I was actually surprised - I had expected it to be another of scifi's awful, distorted attempts at capturing the popularity of movies like Star Wars...But actually, I really liked it. Riddick was very cool - the whole seeing in the dark thing...Sweet.

I want to see both of them considering I'm a big fan of both. I've read many things on King Arthur and his legend along with Merlin. If you really want my standpoint on it I wouldn't really call anything a legend until it's disproved. As for Chronicles of Riddick that movie looks awesome and besides i loved Pitch Black. Still my fave sci-fi movie is Event Horizon, if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor watch it.

Pitch Black was a kick ass movie. Vin Diesel was awesome in it. The BMW films kicked ass too lol. I watched all of em.

My favorite sci-fi movie would have to be Tremors. Its so great! A definite must see by everyone. After that i would say Soylent Green.

I love the bit in Pitch Black when Riddick dislocates his shoulders to get out of the ship.  It's sort of a eww.. Cool! moment.  My favourite Sci Fi film is probably going to have to be Return of the Jedi, sorry if it a bit of a cliché but I love it.

I like Return of the Jedi too. But for me, Star Wars has been dangerously damaged by the latest two films.

I totally agree, but I really like the battle at the end of Episode II.

I saw the trailer...did the armo look a little Roman to anyone else?  It seemed like it was Gladiator on this side of Hadrian's Wall.  I was a big fan of the US cartoon, "Gargoyles" and a lot of the Arthurian Lore from that show, very cool.

I wish they would take some leads from "A Midsummer's Night Dream," and introduce characters like Oberon into the mix.

Oh man...I loved Gargoyles. Such a cool cartoon.

And about the Roman armor - it actually would make perfect sense for those armies to be Roman. Historical evidence has proven that King Arthur reigned around the time that the Roman Empire was expanding into the British Isles. They were constantly at odds with the Celts and 'the Britans', the Isle natives. According to legend, Merlin, Igraine (Arthur's mother) and Morgaine (Arthur's half sister) were all of native blood.

That would actually be very cool/historically accurate if the movie shows Arthur fighting the Romans.

It was way cooler in Lethal Weapon when mnel gibson did it to get out of a straight jacket on a bet.

I knew Hadrian's Wall was actually the extent of the Roman Empire at one point, but was not aware they contributed to Arthurian lineage.  Interesting fact; Siren it looks like we have the same taste thus far.

Gargoyles ruled.  Kind of funny, the number of Star Trek actors who got in on it.

Yeah, Marina Sartis, Michael Dorf, Jonathan Frakes, the list goes on.

Indeed, it seems we do Asha.

But yes, Arthur's father (Uther Pendragon, if I remember correctly) was a Roman higher-up. It will interesting to see if that is portrayed in the film.

Getting back to Gargoyles - Star Trek alums? This I didn't know.

Jonathan Frakes aka William Riker (Number 1) was Xanatos
Marina Sirtis aka Deanna Trois was Demona (sp?)
Michael Dorn aka Worf was Coldstone
Brent Spiner aka Data was Puck
Kate Mulgrew aka Admiral Katherine Janeway (Voyager/Nemesis) was Titania

Ed Asner, Tim Curry, and Keith David (reigning favorite voice actor, he does the Navy Commercials and various other roles) were all regular visitors on the show as well.

I have to say, I probably sound like a dork, albeit most people here will be dorks.  Anyway I really enjoyed watching Star Trek episodes, mostly the Generation ones and the Voyager ones too also DS9 was good...

There seems to be some kind of cult following for DS9 over the other two; I found it the least compelling.  ST is a great franchise, though most of the expressions have become a touch cliche`.  If I hear about one more temporal anomoly I'll flip.  Enterprise started out really cool, the linguist was a really cool touch, as was the doctor.  The Captain and XO were both pretty good characters as well, and some good plotlines have shown up.  But for some reason, the show always plateus after the first season, and ride out the series until it stops making money.

Ed Asner and Tim Curry too? Keith David ? (who has arguably one of the coolest voices - up there with Alan Rickman and Russell Crowe) Thinking of it now, it actually makes perfect sense. I thought I recognized those voices...

As far as ST goes, I could never get into on a fanatical level. There were some very interesting characters, and I did watch Enterprise now and then, but I was never committed. Probably my loss.

Not to get too nostalgic or anything...but I was all about Gargoyles, Transformers, Thundercats, TMNT and Inspector Gadget when I was younger.

Allow me to wax nostalgia... He-Man, Gi Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, Voltron (the shizzle), TMNT, Batman...I wish I had HBO when they ran Spawn, that was suppossed to be pretty good.

Yeah, but it was all about his design and the voice.  Complete coolness.

hmmm.....why dont I be the one to redirect the conversation back to the topic. And before I switch it back, Soundwave was awesome. Transformers was awesome.

Hopefully they put Morgaine into a more "Mists of Avalon" perspective. She was a lot more interesting than just an evil sister.

Crap!  Didn't realize how much we sidetracked...

Yeah, I loved her role in that perspective.  Very complex, much more interesting.

Yeah, we got sidetracked... :)

But back to the Arthur business - I really hope they show Morgaine in a "Mists of Avalon" light. That character was extremely developed and multi-faceted. But, seeing as Guinevere (her antagonist in Bradley's novel) looks to be very much the opposite of how Bradley portrays her, then I'm not sure if Morgaine will be the same either. I hope my instincts are, because I do really enjoy that invention of Morgaine.

Yesterday I saw The Day After Tomorrow, very good film indeed.  Before it there was a trailer for it and I dont know how to say this but they are all in roman armour.  That doesnt really bother me that much actually because like you guys said ealier in the thread that was historically about the time when the romans were invading.  Also Kiera Knightly get painted up in Celtic Blue War Paint, SUPER SEXY...  *is half scottish*.  Anyway it looks very good, the actor for Merlin looks good, havent seen him in anything before though.
