Well, it isn't like it wasn't expected, but I still got sad as I was reading through the announcement.

RIP. You did so much for conservation efforts.

No seriously.. I was talking to someone about this today.. I think it was really crappy that a Stingray had to do him in.. I mean.. its not like he wrestled stingrays and was like... MWAHHAA I am better than you.. because if he died that way... wrestling a croc... people would be like.. wow.. there is one tough croc, even the hunter couldn't take him.... but... instead... he gets stung in the freakin heart...

It's a tragic occurrence, because stingrays rarely attack.  Apparenly he was filming with a very large one, which had a 20 inch tail.  They say that if they sting you it most likely won't kill you unless they hit the pelvis or the heart, and he got hit in the heart.  19 people have been killed by stingrays... within the last 100 years.  Apparently he was dead before the chopper got there, and his wife didn't find out for ages because she was in the outback with their two kids (one of whom is a couple of months old).  Very sad indeed.

He got a barb not a sting I thought, barbs are nasteh cause when the stingray moves away it rips a lot! it's like having a club with spikes coming out of it pushed inside you and then ripped out.... have a nice day folks.

It was a poisonous infection, the barb may well have held the poison.  Either way, not a nice way to go

The poison wasn't enough to kill him (even a large stingray's poison couldn't do that) it was the fact that the barb pierced his heart, killing him almost instantly. It was basically like a stab wound. Honestly though, what are the odds of being pierced in the heart by a stingray? And I'm glad it wasn't a croc, because then everyone would think "well, he got what he deserved, playing around with those things." So, hats off to a pop culture icon for conservasionists.

Not enough to kill unless you're hit in the heart or the groin, or so the experts say ;)

Either way, Steve's dead.  Long live Steve.

There was a succinct post about it on The Dilbert Blog (http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/the_dilbert_blog/), but for some reason it has disappeared.  Still, the man died doing what he loved I guess.
