Title: Proof Heironymus can dance...
Post by: Anonymous on September 22, 2006, 05:10:19 pm
Alright, I stumbled upon this a minute ago, and I knew you'd all want to see it. As you may or may not know, Heironymus and I are fraternity brothers in Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at Georgia Southern University.  Well, his pledge class... "volunteered" to perform in the schools annual doodah/dance show.  This was a practice run they performed during a party.  Heironymus will be the big guy in the green shirt and khaki pantsdoing the Zombie-like manuevre at 1:19

Here's the link to the dance with Heironymus in it. They didn't win the competition, but they gave it a good run

Next is a link of the next year's pledges at an annual step show/fundraiser as the blue man group.  This one won first place at the competition.

We dont call your country a cunt, dont call our fraternity a "frat".

You can ask Heironymus our guys really enjoy this competition. We take away their practices to punish them :-D

hmm fraternities take offense to them being called frats? just kind of thought it was a shortened version so that they didn't have to say the whole thing.  hehe but in any case my bad :)  hmm i have to wonder though .. you said they take away practice for punishment. hmm like what type of things would they do to deserve that kind of punishment. (or not do whatever the case maybe)

wow didn't know that

Its not that the shortening is offensive. Its that Frat means something different from Fraternity. Fraternity is the action of Fraterhood, or more commonly known as "brotherhood". Frat is associated with Frat guys, Frat parties, Frat lifestyle. Frat is a reference to the "Animal House" style lifestyle that people unfortuantly associate with fraternities. There has been a huge anti-fraternity movement on campuses across the country because of the pink-polo-popped-collar-douche-bag strerotype that has developed within the elitist fraternities on campuses. I'll be the first one to tell you that fraternities are bred to believe that they are the best. Its a matter of what they think they are best at. Tau Kappa Epsilon stands for finding the BEST men. Men who do not judge others based on wealth rank or honor, but instead on personal worth and character. So when you say fraternity it means you believe that we are men who share a common bond, who take care of one another, and the community. When you say Frat it means you believe that all fratenrities are a group of people who only care aboout parties, clothes, and wealth. Sorry for the rant, and I understand that you meant no offense, but I felt like I could help everyone better understand why we take offense to that.

wow, nice thanks for the input on the differences there... yeah i wasn't using it in any type of sterotype form just as an abbreviation... (too lazy to type the whole thing) but very nice to know for future references.

Ah, another reason I never joined a fraternity...heh. I never could get past the part where you pay for friends who make you feel like shit the first few weeks you are with them. I went to a few parties freshman year and it was always this stupid game with the fraternity guys trying to get as much alcohol in the girls as possible, while the girls tried to get as much free alcohol as possible without getting caught with their pants down. And of course you have your racist fraternities and all-black fraternities and this and that. Most of them could just be described as "shady".

I'm sure there might be a decent fraternity or two out there, but don't think you are defending the "majority". Most people join for the parties and popularity, though if you are in FA, you have to have good taste, so no worries...heh.

Back on topic, the video freezes at 19 secs for me. I'm still trying to get it to work...

I'm sorry gotta put out the quote my parents told me about the TKE house at Nebraska when they went through college....If you can't go Greek, go TKE. :D Aside from that your post is right on. I'm also in a fraternity and yes, we don't like being called Frats.  The TKE house is right across the street and they are a good group of guys, aside from one of their new pledge's who decided he didn't like one of our guys and wanted to fight him (afterwords I found out from the pledge class president that the guy is on steriods and probably won't be sticking around, or so he hoped).  And just so you know I am in BEY(Beta Sigma Psi) which is the national lutheran fraternity.

As far as paying for friends, it's never felt that way to me Tbone, half the guys in the house are idiototic morons who, while they are generaly good guys, I can't stand most the time because of the things they do.  The other half have become some of the best friends I have.

As for the paying for friends portion...
You arn't paying for friends... when you pay dues its not like they distribute it to the rest of the guys and go.. Hey.. here's for having to put up with so and so's bullshit for a year.. it actually goes to functions and socials and things like that so that you don't have to do assloads of fundraisers and the like.. if we wanted to do a fundraiser everyweek for the whole semester, it would probably cover most of all of our expenses... and we wouldn't have to pay dues.. but as it were.. we don't want to nor have the time to have bukos of fundraisers.. most small organizations or campus groups do fundraisers when they need to for special events and then ask for donations from member for the remaining cost.. Fraternities however figure up a budget every year for a year.. divide by the number of members.. and viola... you have dues... if people choose not to participate in the events then.. well... that is there own loss... but for instance.. we pay (what is it App,) $75 bucks for our pledge class to be able to compete in the dance competition. (practices and stuff bring them together as a group) if they win.. awesome.. if they don't.. our brothers don't mind paying 5 bucks each to go see them..
So.. long rant short... its not paying for friends.. its paying for the activities, formals, socials, and Everthing else involved in being with a large group of people that like to do more than sit around and watch tv.. ;)

and as for catchy qoutes... its much the same for every fraternity.. there is pretty much one for them all... and for that matter.. even more for the soroities... and whats most interesting is.. my fraternity may have an awesome chapter at Ga Southern and have a complete group of dickheads that give everyone a bad name at another school... unfortunatly.. being national or international.. one bad chapter or a few bad chapters can ruin it for all...

Hey, I like the "If you cant go greek, go TKE quote". I think our chapter, and from the guys I've met from other chapters have embrased it. We are extremely diverse (one of our pledges is a gay, black cheerleader) and as a result, we take a lot of guys the other fraternities dont want because they're not wealthy, or from the right city, or look a certain way. But TBone, try maximizing the video, that worked for me. If you go full screen it will load seperatly.
