Post by: Subb on December 06, 2006, 02:06:11 pm
Well, now that I'm in 6th form I have to choose what subject to do in uni, I'm intrested in the following;

Architecture.
Law.
Performing Arts.

If I had to choose 2 it would be architecture and performing arts.... :/ I'm stuck, any help on how to get into uni/college would be hot :D

Thankies...

I'm not sure what 6th form is, but I'll try to help..heh.

I say choose that which matters most to you. You only get one life - don't compromise - do what the hell you want to do. I majored in acting because it is the only job I can think of where I can get up at 7:45 a.m. and go to work and not be bitter about having to work or worrying about falling asleep all the time.

So what would you rather call yourself in the future? A performer or an architect? Which will make you the happiest?

That's the thing, I love design but I love performing, especially in gigs; I think I could develope that a bit more!

Also, 7 years in uni for architecture is very off-putting while 3 or 4 for acting in the Royal Welsh College for Music and Drama in cardiff... Erg.

6th form is the last "grade".
We have Primary 1 - 7, then Secondary 1 - 6. It cna vary a little.

Well, when I finished, I applied (and was accepted) for Architecture in one Uni, and Psychology in another.
Instead, I took a gap year (a "free" year), and eventually went on to do Software Development instead! I'm now working in IT, and enjoy "creating" with my programming.

I did computing class, but dropped out at GCSE level - so I don't particularly have school computing knowledge, and I didn't enjoy it back then (except games!). My point? Strange the way things go in life. What do you really enjoy doing?

My (extended) gap year included several minor jobs here and there... some random (soldering for Nokia) and other the run of the mill (working for Sky TV) stuff, but it taught me about proper work; payslips, tax, my own cashflow to manage.

Career advice is tricky, it can be viewed from many angles I guess.

5th grade? Hmm...

Most schools here have 1st - 12th grades divided into elementary, middle, and high school. High school is 9th - 12th. 12th is your senior year and the year before college. I'm guessing you are a senior, then?

personally, althought I of course have a bias, the one bit of advice my father gave me was to get a law degree. it does not automatically mean that you will become a lawyer but it does open so so many doors. Also, go to aberystwith (sp) as the women there were all dutch and amazing!

I took Comparative Government and Politics, Media and Communications, and Intermediate Business Studies.  It got me into the civil service, which got me into a compliance role in the recruitment industry, which got me where I am now which is accounting for a software firm.

There's no saying the first path you pick is the one you're going to stay on, believe me when I say employers will care far more about your passion and experience than they will the qualification you're holding.
