Title: Bad POST Beeps :-/
Post by: Da6onet on May 28, 2007, 10:37:23 pm
So you may have already known I've been trying to bring new life into my 8 year old desktop. Today all the parts were in and I got it put back together.
However it doesn't pass POST. The error code I'm getting indicates one of the following.
1. CPU not seated properly
2. CPU Dead
3. Motherboard CPU Interface dead

Because I just so happen to have a spare CPU laying around to test with, I've figured out that it is indeed the Motherboard that has died.

Fear not though! I've purchased a replacement for $15 (ebay ftw).

All things considered, I'm not surprised the motherboard died, I haven't tried powering on the unit for a long long time (like 2 years), and the last time I did I blew up the power supply so it probably wasn't good for the board either :-p

Pictures, budget and benchmarks once I get the damn thing working again.

It'd be nice to see you back in-game, too. :)

Hooray for fixing old computers!

how does one benchmark things?

You basically just have a standard set of programs and test things like load time, framerate, or in the case of sysmark or 3dmark a generated score.

As technology gets better, you get newer more intensive things to push the hardware so for example, my 2 year old computer can barely run the latest 3dmark demos.

The benchmarks I planned on using
-Some older version of 3dmark (like 02-03)
-Quake 3 (framerate test)
-Test loading times for windows/office programs/steam
-See if the machine will run MxO and Halflife 2 reasonably (framerate test)

I'll run the same programs on my newer computer and compare the results.

The interesting thing I'll be looking at is to see how much of a choke hold the processor is. I'll be gimping my laptop to 1gb to keep the physical amount of memory the same (yes I know pc3200 > pc100 ram)

But yeah the specs for each rig:
Desktop
Motherboard: Asus P3B-F 440BX
Processor: Intel Pentium III 1Ghz
RAM: 1GB (4x256) PC-100 ECC SDRAM
Harddrive: Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM IDE
Graphics: ATI 9800XT 256MB AGP 2X
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2

Laptop
Logic Board: Uniwill 258KA0
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.4Ghz
RAM: 1GB PC-3200 DDR
Harddrive: Hitachi 60GB 5400RPM EIDE
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB AGP 8X
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

nocry just go to google.com and type in 3dmark if you want a graphical benchmark and type in pcmark for more of an all over benchmark.  Im sure you can find it pretty easily if not i'll send you links but I dont have the time to find some right now so I'll get back to you later on that if you need some.
